Part 22
This part is also from Sagar's point of view, for recap, please go to page 58!
Usually I barely even registered the girls' constant barrage of criticism. But today I found myself unable to ignore them. Hearing Srav, Surili, and Sana put down Vidya and her friends was making me feel slightly sick to my stomach.
Then again, an objective opinion on Vidya's looks might give me a better idea about how to direct her in he this transformation process, I reasoned. This would be totally valuable. Even if it was also totally annoying.
"I don't get it," I said interrupting the insult parade. "Why are those particular girls' losers?"
Srav stared at me as if I had just grown another head. "I'll assume that's a rhetorical question," she declared.
I shook my head. "Seriously, I mean, they're all nice and attractive and smart…So why don't they have it? Why are they social outcasts?"
Srav wrinkled her nose. "Attractive? Under what dictionary do those four stooges qualify as attractive?"
"I think someone messed with his lemonade," Sana commented. "Either that or it's time for Sagar to take a trip to the eye doctor."
"Please. Just take a look at their geeky, blah clothes," Srav told me. "Notice their stupid pony tails." She was really getting into it now. "They don't even know that any decent, self-respecting girl doesn't go out in public without makeup. Have they ever heard of the word attitude?"
"They look like hey came to the cafeteria straight from gym class!" Surili added. "Ugh."
I kept nodding as Srav, Surili, and Sana continued to list reasons why Vidya and her friends were losers. But inside, I disagreed. Would a loser make me laugh every time I had a conversation with her? Would a loser be able to light up a dark pizza place with her bright smile?
Nonetheless, I knew that Srav knew of what she spoke. As one of the most popular girls in school, she had a full understanding of what made a girl special in the eyes of her peers.
"Are you saying that with different hair and new clothes, one of those girls could have your look? " I asked, "I mean, if it's all about ponytails and blush brushes, any one of them should be able to elevate herself to your status."
"My status? "Srav asked, shooting me a warning glance.
"Well, she would never be as beautiful as you are," I added quickly. "But do you think an average girl, could you know, make herself stand out with the right changes?"
Srav shrugged. "Theoretically-but it'll never happen. Not one of those girls has the slightest sense of style."
I shoved another piece of pasta into my mouth, pondering Srav's words.
I know it's definitely not long enough…but at the last minute, some of my friends called, and so I'm going out with them!! I'll continue tomorrow though! And maybe a bit today!
Lov ya all,
Meera
