For the grand finale of Star's Amul Voice Of India, Gajendra Singh has convinced Lata Mangeshkar to preside as the chief guest and super-judge. The reluctant diva was convinced, via her sister Usha Mangeshkar, to be part of the reality show. The deal, at the moment, is hush-hush. Says a source from Voice of India, "Lataji has always been shy of going on television and she had completely turned down Gajendra Singh every time he had approached her when he was doing the show for Zee TV. What tilted the scales in Gajendra Singh's favour was sister Asha Bhonsle's appearance on Zee TV's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. Apart from the fact that Lataji's family convinced her to be on the rival show, she is very impressed with the new musical talent. She has encouraged everyone from composers Laxmikant-Pyarelal to her latest protge Mayuresh Pai, singers like Suresh Wadkar, Anuradha Paudwal, Alka Yagnik, Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya. " Though no money has been discussed, apparently a handsome donation will be made to Lata Mangeshkar's hospital in Pune, in return for her appearance on the show. This will be the singing diva's first TV appearance since the music talent show Meri Awaaz Suno on Star Plus, which she had co-produced. Confirming the news Gajendra Singh says, "Yes, Lataji has agreed to be on our show. But it's too early to talk about it."

when last time lataji was on Meri Awaaz suno Sunidi Chauhan won the competition.

The melody queen who had earlier questioned the quality of music reality shows has surprised everyone by agreeing to appear on one.


Though she has expressed displeasure about the plethora and quality of music contests on television, melody queen Lata Mangeshkar has reluctantly agreed to be present at the grand finale of Voice Of
India to be held on November 24.

The show's producer-director Gajendra Singh couldn't contain his excitement. "She has agreed to give the winner the trophy. It took a lot of persuasion, a lot of perseverance. But then it's worth it because Lataji is no ordinary mortal. She's Mata Saraswati reincarnated. And to have the Goddess Of Melody grace our show is the best gift I've received in my 14 years of service to the cause of music."

Interestingly Lata's sister Asha Bhosle served as the judge on the rival music contest Sa Re Ga Ma Pa a few months ago. "But Lataji coming on our show isn't something we planned after Ashaji came on the other show," protests Singh. "We've been trying to persuade her for years to come on our show. This time she has finally agreed."

This would be the nightingale's first appearance on television, not counting the defunct music contest Meri Awaaz Suno seven years ago on which she was a co-producer. Lata met the Voice Of India finalists at her residence during the Ganesh Mahotsav.

"Her advice to the contestants was to not copy any of the established voices. She has always said it's relatively easy to sing popular numbers, much harder to sing original numbers," says Gajendra Singh.
