Big B connection in 'Swami'

Everyone knows that choreographer-director Ganesh Acharya's SWAMI stars Manoj Bajpai and Juhi Chawla in principal roles. But the film begins and ends with' guess who? None other than Amitabh Bachchan. In fact, Big B has done the voiceover to introduce the characters of this film.

'I started my career as an assistant to choreographer Kamal, who used to choreograph Amit-ji's songs. Amit-ji has always encouraged me. In fact, when I requested him to do the voiceover, he obliged instantly. Not once did he play difficult,' Ganesh states.

While on SWAMI, Akshay Kumar and his family were recently invited to watch the film and the reactions were overwhelming. Everyone, including Akki, was reportedly moist-eyed at the end of the screening.

P.S.: Ganesh Acharya is planning a musical next, like we mentioned last week. Here's the latest on that front. It's called HAI NA BOLO BOLO.

Senior and Junior Bachchan in 'Pa'

'Cheeni Kum' has left the director R. Balki in high spirits and he is all set and prepared for his next project 'Pa' with the same producer Sunil Manchanda. Apart from the same director and producer, the music director is also the same, Ilaiyaraaja. From the starcast of 'Cheeni Kum', Our Big B will be there along with his son Abhishek Bachchan. The film is a light comedy depicting the relationship between a father and a son. Senior and Junior Bachchan will surely pull off the father and son chemistry. As for the leading lady, Aishwarya was being considered earlier, but latest updates say that Vidya Balan may be the ultimate choice.

Meet Tongue-in-Cheek Big B!

By Subhash K Jha

"Gosh! Two hits on one Friday….... Hadn't thought of that. Now that you bring it up, I feel delighted. When a film succeeds several thoughts run through your mind:

1. "I hope other producer directors are taking note, to give me another job."

2. "Respond..respond to the congratulatory greetings that come via sms.And remain calm and humble. It may all change drastically by the time the next release comes by."

3. "Has the media noticed it?? I wish they would…..must intensify the search in papers, channels, websites, trade journals.Should one let the few friendly journalists subtly be told?? Or would it destroy the achievement? What if they disagree? Damn, this is such a tough situation!!"

4. "I hope I am walking correctly in public? Head not too high..,In fact push it down further than before ! Mustn't give the impression I am gloating. "

5. "Tone down the sartorial conceit, you idiot! Nothing distinctive and flashy! They'll think he's showing off!! Be humble..humble..humble."

6. "Chenni Kum producer Sunil Manchanda and Balki pushing me to do promotional TV and press, to drive in the marketing further and talk of the success.Hell !! How does one do that ? Wish I could just duck this somehow.

So difficult to answer the same questions with the same answers to 45 different channels. Its a challenge for any actor!! Ok..ok..calm down, calm down.I'll do this one standing, this one sitting on a bench, another with my clothes changed.

Oh lord, forgotten which shirt I wore for the previous electronic press meet.Musn't repeat it…..They'll make fun of it.Ok, got it..got it..must earmark a separate wardrobe for interviews only.

Tag the dresses..jeans and leather jacket, channel X………. blue top, channel Y... Damn I'm brilliant! Er..er..accessories..dark glasses..yeah..they look cool..good good..will hide the puffed eyes and the grey on the eyebrows.

In fact isn't this from Cheeni Kum? Fantastic! I'll wear the 'kool Versace glasses' from the film. There'll be a connect!! Ok..I'm all set!!

7. "Keep calling Balki and Sunil. They have all the figures and the reactions from the theaters. They smiling ? Tone of their voice?… Ok,it's sounding excited enough...Good! What about calls coming in? Who's that from? who's calling? Yashji? Yash Chopra?

Give me, give me give me the line quickly.. Ji Yashji..ji..ji..ji.Thank you, doing very good? thank you Yashji. All your good wishes... phew ! That was Yash Chopra..well..he would know.. What a relief !"

8. "Pray..pray..pray...just pray.."

So..that takes care of one film.

Two in one week on the same Friday!!??

No..this can't be happening to me.I'm not supposed to be here. In this realm. I'm 65.Darn it!! But its Shootout …..okaaay. That's not my film. I'm just another name in the credits.

Shootout belongs to Sunju and Vivek and Suniel and Tushar and Arbaaz and Apu Lakhia and Sanjay Gupta and all the other wonderful performers.Leave me out of this, pleeeease !!

I'm just happy with Cheeni Kum, thank you.

Bollywood Legend Amitabh Bachchan Faces Possible Fraud Charges
By Staff
Jun 5, 2007

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan is facing possible fraud charges over an illegal farmyard deal.

The actor - dubbed The Big B - is in hot water from Indian state officials over the illegal deal to buy the property in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

Senior state goverment officials want criminal charges to be brought after it was ruled that registering the land under Bachchan's name amounted to fraud.

The actor was given a plot of land by the previous goverment regime headed by Mulayam Singh Yadav, but it was cancelled following allegations of irregularity in the allotment.

However, Bachchan insists the property is vital for his farming duties.

Bachchan reigns over Bollywood

Published Date: June 05, 2007
By Krittivas Mukherjee

Two new Bollywood films starring Amitabh Bachchan, released simultaneously last month, have become big hits, proving once again that even at the age of 64 he remains the darling of the Indian box office. The two hits are contrasting stories. One is a romantic comedy in which Bachchan woos a woman young enough to be his daughter, the other a gangster flick where he plays a lawyer who saves trigger-happy policemen from the law. The two films opened on May 25 to rave reviews and an impressive box office response, once again proving Bachchan's versatility and reaffirming his status as an industry legend, critics said.
"Cheeni Kum" (Less Sugar), the romantic comedy, succeeded because of humour, whereas a similar, bold Lolita-like story also starring Bachchan and released this year, failed because conservative Indians rejected its sexual undertone. "A film -like 'Cheeni Kum' signifies the winds of change in Bollywood," said film critic Taran Adarsh. "Amitabh Bachchan proves his supremacy yet again. Playing an arrogant chef, the actor is natural all through." Not only is "Cheeni Kum" doing very well with urban audiences, as expected, but it is also slowly picking up in small towns. Bachchan has had a powerful hold over Indian audiences for over three decades, and even now, roles are written exclusively to suit his age. He has had four releases so far this year and three more are due to open around the end of the year.

Bachchan's popularity is not limited to the big screen though. He is also among the most sought-after celebrities by the advertising industry and endorses an array of products from cars to chocolates. In "Cheeni Kum", Bachchan is a confirmed bachelor living with his 85-year-old mother and his only friend and confidante is a nine-year-old girl with cancer. An arrogant, egoistic and pompous man with a singular passion in life - cooking - Bachchan's first encounters with the 34-year-old heroine are fraught with tension. But against all odds they fall in love and go to the girl's father - who is six years younger than the prospective groom - for consent to marry.

The gangster story, "Shootout at Lokhandwala", is inspired by a real-life gun battle between police and criminals on the streets of Mumbai in 1991. The shootout was highly controversial because of allegations that it was stage-managed by police who took money from the mob to eliminate a rival gang. Though Bachchan plays a small role, he shines as the lawyer fighting for the policemen. Indu Mirani, a film critic with the DNA newspaper, described the lawyer played by Bachchan as a "cynical, headmaster-type of dictatorial figure". "He thinks nothing of insulting his clients, telling them to shut up and passing judgment on all they tell him." - Reuters

MUMBAI, JUN 5: With speculation of the ongoing rivalry between Bollywood stalwarts Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan continuing to smoulder, two competitive channels last Sunday ran simultaneous prime-time telecasts of both the old and new versions of the film Don, in which the two actors play the respective lead roles. Star Plus viewers caught the new Don starring Khan, while the original blockbuster, starring Bachchan, was telecast on Sony Entertainment TV.

According to television rating agency Audience Measurement & Analytics Ltd (aMap), the Don remake on Star Plus had a television rating (TVR) of 1.96, noticeably more than the 1.12 TVR garnered by the 1978 Bachchan classic. Whether the simultaneous telecast was a coincidence or deliberate remains anybody's guess. Says a Star spokesperson: "We really don't know if it was a coincidence or a deliberate move on the part of Sony." He further adds, "The ratings for the new Don will obviously be more as this was its television premier."

Even Sony executives expressed surprise at the coincidental timing of both films. However, industry sources told FE that it appeared to have been a well planned strategy as media planning agencies knew well in advance the telecast schedule of both films. The new Don was expected to attract more advertisers, especially when pitted against the old one.

The rivalry between the two superstars was triggered after Shahrukh Khan was roped in for the third season of Kaun Banega Crorepati.
