Last Hope
"Alison! Alison, just listen to me," Shahid said grabbing his wife's hand. This was their last hope and he had to convince his wife to agree. "Alison, Kripa is our only daughter and her condition is just getting worse and worse. She got kicked out of school for disturbance of others. She needs to be put on suicidal watch!" Shahid said in the darkness of their house.
In the little lighting coming into the house from the windows of the moon, he could see his wife in tears. "Shahid, I am scared. What if no doctor is willing help our daughter out? Then what?" Alison said with tears streaming out of her eyes. "We have to at least try" Shahid said holding Alison in his arms letting her cry.
The next day Alison, Shahid, and Kripa packed there bags and headed towards Wichita, Kansas, were one 23 year old psychiatrist, who was willing to put Kripa on suicidal watch by having her live in his house. Shahid and Alison would never allow such a young psychiatrist live in the same house as their daughter if they were not confident that he was a good person.
Shahid had heard of the young psychiatrist on TV when he was watching the news. He was the top graduate in his high school and university. He was considered the most reliable person in the United States. Shahid had spoken to the psychiatrist on the phone and it took a lot of convincing for him to agree to treat Kripa.
Shahid had to admit that the psychiatrist had a lot of demands when agreeing to treat his daughter. The psychiatrist had said that he did not want any family members of Kripa within a hundred mile of the area because family members cause sometimes depression unknowingly. He had also demanded a full report of Kripa's mental illness and wanted to study both him and Alison just incase if Kripa's depression came from one of her parents. Last of the psychiatrist demand was that Kripa should not know that Shahid and Alison were bring Kripa to Kansas for treatment.
Shahid looked into the rearview mirror looking at his daughter. He remembered when he first held his daughter in his arms when she came from the hospital and how happy she had been. It saddened him to see that his daughter had become so…so unsuited for society. He remembered how Kripa had fallen so deeply into a depression when she was 12. He remembered picking her up from school and she had said she did not feel well. At that time Shahid thought it was just a common cold but then she became worse and worse until it was not about fighting a common cold but it was a fight between life and death inside her head.
"Shahid are you sure Kripa will be ok living with a strange man alone in Kansas?" Alison said, sitting beside the passenger side of the car. Alison kept her voice low so Kripa could not hear in the back seat. Alison loved her daughter so much that no other mother could love.
"Alison, you know I would not allow just anyone live with our daughter. She needs help" Shahid said in his low deep voice. In the past three hours, Kripa had not said one word and this was no surprise to Alison and Shahid anymore. Kripa had been a quite person for the past six years. There was a time where things got so bad that Shahid had to lock up all the sharp objects in the house.
"I hope you are right about this man being a reliable person," Alison said with clear concern in her voice.
"Don't worry, I had a friend that had meet him before and said he was the perfect person to treat Kripa" Shahid said taking one of his hands off the staring wheel and putting it on his wife's hand.
"Shahid, what is the doctors name?" Alison asked realizing she never asked this question before. "Dr. Angad S. Khanna" Shahid said, giving Alison's hand a little squeeze. " I have heard of that name before" Alison said trying to remember where she had hear of the name and then it clicked. She had read about him in people magazine. He was considered the best psychiatrist in the entire country and was also nominated for the noble prized but never won. Alison now knew that Kripa would be in good hands but she had to wonder how Shahid could afford for such a good doctor.
"Shahid, how are we going to pay for the treatment" when Alison said this Shahid figured out that most likely Alison figured out he was nominated for the noble prize. "I used all of my life savings." Shahid did not want to tell his wife this but he could not lie to her either. Alison was greatly disappointed but knew that she would have done the same for Kripa.
Alison turned her head toward the back seat to see her daughter looking out the window quietly it was almost like Kripa was not even human. Kripa's skin was quite pale, from always staying inside the house. Alison could not even remember the last time Kripa had smiled with happiness.
"How much farther till we reach Kansas" Alison said with a sigh.
"Ten minutes" Shahid said with a determined tone with the last hope that Dr. Khanna would bring his daughter back. After all Dr. Khanna was his last hope!
*****
When reaching Dr. Khanna's house, seeing his house surprised Shahid and Alison. The house was in a very small town where every other person that passed the area knew one another. The house was very small almost the size of a small cottage. For a second Shahid and Alison thought they were in a different world. They did not understand why a millionaire like Dr. Khanna would want to live in such a small town in such a small house.
Shahid walked up to the house while Alison walked behind him with Kripa's hand in hers. Shahid knocked on the door expected some one to tell him he had the wrong house but to his surprise he found a smiling 23-year-old man with kaki shorts and a white shirt with red bold letters written on it saying LIFEGUARD.
"You must be the Sharma's, right?" Angad said pleasantly. Angad liked company mostly because he lived on his own and things got boring. Angad moved aside letting Shahid and Alison into the house but when it came to Kripa going inside the house, Angad just slammed the door in her face.
"Dr. Khanna! You just slammed the door at my daughter" Alison said shocked and surprised at Angad's methods.
"She is eighteen, if you treat her like a child she will never learn to face reality" Angad said taking a seat in the very small living room. He motioned Shahid and Alison to take a seat. Both sat down worriedly. Alison looked around the house with her eyes and saw that it was very small. It had a small kitchen that could be seen from the living room and two bedrooms.
"Tell me does your daughter swim?" Angad asked, taking out a piece of paper from the side table to take notes. "She used to love swimming but my wife and I stop taking her to the pool after she attempted to drown herself" Shahid said uncomfortable of the fact that his daughter was outside, alone.
Angad noticed the uneasiness between Alison and Shahid and just smiled. "Don't worry your daughter will be fine out side, this is a small town and no one will let her commit suicide here." Angad said trying to get Alison and Shahid to relax. "Mrs. Sharma, when you were pregnant with your daughter, were you in any form of depression?" this was the first time Angad sounded serious when he talked.
"Only for a week, but it did not have an effect on Kripa. Well we don't think it did. Kripa fell into a depression when she was 12" Angad looked up at Alison and then wrote something down while he spoke "Well, Mrs. Sharma, this is very common in
depression. Usually if a mother is depressed during pregnancy the effect could go to the child but its effects could take months or even years to see. It is obvious that these effect of depression did not show up until Kripa was 12 and it probably effected her a lot harder then it should because the pressure of depression was always inside her mind for 12 years and did not come out till then."
"I don't understand what you are trying to say" Alison stated questioningly.
"What I am saying is that there is a good chance that Kripa's depression and suicidal attempts could put an end to her life if not treated quickly. And this is where I come in. I will agree to put your daughter on suicidal watch but I need you to also work with me. I need you two to stop trying to baby your daughter and understand, if you want her to be normal then you have to treat her like a normal person." Angad stood up and so did Alison and Shahid.
"You two must not call her or try to contact Kripa in any way or form. I will call you both every month to let you know, how your daughter is doing, and I do not want any one that may know of Kripa personally any where near this town, do I make my self clear" Angad said strictly. Shahid and Alison nodded their heads.
"I will get Kripa's bags and I do not want you to tell Kripa that she will be living here for treatment but instead I want you two to tell her that she is going to stay here until you both come back from shopping" Angad said about to open the door when Shahid spoke up.
"But wont Kripa know that we never came back from shopping?" Shahid said
"That is the point, she must know that the world does not bow down to her feet to please her. She will learn all the things she gave up. Mr. And Mrs. Sharma, you have babied her enough and now I will teach the reality of life even if it ends up getting her to sleep in the lawn in the dirt and rain." By saying that Angad opened the door of his house to see that Kripa was in the same position as she was when he had slammed the door in her face.
Angad brushed pass Kripa to get her bags from the car while, Alison hugged her daughter and kissed her cheek. After Alison, Shahid also hugged his daughter hoping that the next time he sees his daughter she will be a girl he once wished to see. As Shahid and Alison started to walk away Kripa finally spoke her first sentence all day.
"Mom, dad, where are you going?" in Kripa's voice it sounded like she had the least bit if care but was just speaking for the sake of saying something. Alison looked like she was about to cry any second so Shahid spoke for her.
"Your mother and I are going shopping and we will be back, until then you can stay with…" Shahid did not know what Angad would want Kripa to call him, Dr. Khanna, Mr., Khanna, Angad…lucky for him Angad said it for him. "You will stay with me, Angad until your parents get back." Angad said with a happy smile that put a bigger frown on Kripa's face.
Angad took Kripa's bag inside to her room and all Kripa did was follow. This time Angad did not slam the door in her face but instead try talking to her. "So tell me your name" Angad said, setting the bags down and turned expecting Kripa to say something but saw that she was more interested at looked at her wood floor patter.
Angad snapped his fingers in front of Kripa's eyes, which caused her to look up at him, but she did not say anything still. "What is your name" Angad asked again, he noticed Kripa looking strait into his light brown eyes. Angad knew this trick very well. Angad knew that people like Kripa looked into people's eyes, which usually causes the speaker to walk away so he just looked back into Kripa's light green eyes intently.
Five minutes passed by and Angad still did not get an answer but he waited patiently, waiting for any answer. Another five minutes passed by and his cell phone even started to ring but he did not pick it up. He continued to look strait at Kripa waiting for her to answer; he looked at her as if he had all the time in the world, which was not true. He was volunteering at the public pool as a Life Guard and he need to be there in the next 10 minutes but he was not going to let Kripa think that she could always get way from not answering his questions.
"Kripa." She finally answered.
"That is a nice name," Angad said, again looking strait into Kripa's eyes. "I am a part time life guard at the public pool. So come with me" The way Angad said this, he made sure not to give Kripa the option to say no and just grabbed her hand and took her outside into the bright sun, both walking towards the pool hand in hand.
