A/N: Spread love, not hate. Especially not because of my late update. Read and review! [HP references explained at the end.]

Randhir stood still, trying - in vain - to process what was happening. A faintly quivering Sanyukta was inches away from him, her hurried breath brushing against his neck while he held her close in his arms. He was afraid of looking down, afraid of what he might see or feel when he looked at her. Minutes ago, he had been engaged in a heated in-the-moment snog with the sexy (did I say sexy? I meant irritating!) Ravenclaw. Unexpected, yes, but who was he to complain? His trousers were a tad bit uncomfortable now, though. Bugger.
Tatiana, on the other hand, was lounging against the wall, cool as a cucumber - her arms crossed and a smug look on her face. Feeling impatient, he said as calmly as was physically possible, "What is it you want, Ana? I'm sure we could talk about it tomorrow in class. Can't we?"
She smirked at him, her usual coy facade draining away at his words, and pushed off of the wall to stand in front of him. He felt Sanyukta stiffen as Tatiana's (or Ana's, as I'd come to call her) gaze rested on her briefly before looking back at him. After months of exposure to the clever Gryffindor, he'd become accustomed to her games, her tricks, making him immune to her...advances. They'd been playing this game of cat and mouse ever since the day she'd been sorted into his House.
He doubted Sanyukta knew that, though.

"GRYFFINDOR!" bellowed the scruffy Sorting Hat, as Randhir clapped for the new addition to his House: the transfer student from Durmstrang.
Professor McGonagall had announced the news of Tatiana Dimitrov joining Hogwarts, for some godforsaken reason he couldn't remember, before the first years had been sorted, causing a lot of excited twitters and whispers to spread out among the crowd. He, however, had tried his best to tamp down on the annoyance bubbling up in him. The gaggle of newly sorted students (why oh why did so many have to be Gryffindors?!) had left their table feeling cramped, which also meant that all that food would be hogged by tiny, innocent-faced, devils.
Cursing his fate, he let his eyes sweep across the Hall languidly, stopping at a certain girl at the Ravenclaw table. Sanyukta was chattering away with her friends, one hand gesturing wildly. She was probably clutching at a dusty tome with the other.
"Such a know-it-all," he said to himself. He grinned. Her antics were making her frightened neighbor inch away from her flailing arm. That girl was a real piece of work.
"God, could this be more tiresome?"
He cast a glance towards his left, shaking his head at the bespectacled girl banging her head against the table. Kaustuki Sherpa had been his best-mate since first year, when they'd sat together at Charms and both blasted their levitating feathers as a prank. The ensuing laughter, and detention, had bonded them quite inexplicably.
"Stop it, Kaus," he grumbled. He shoved at her shoulder. "Get up." He was greeted with a groan.
"Is she hungover?"
Randhir looked up at the lanky boy lounging in front of him, his disheveled hair sticking out at odd angles. Parth Kashyap, the last of their trio. Theirs had been an odd start. Parth had been the unfortunate victim to his and Kaus' feathery mishap, his (at that time) neatly combed hair having caught the embers from the tiny blast and blazing merrily until doused by a quick spell. Who knew accidents and reluctant apologies could form such strong bonds of friendship?
He'd wondered, often, if that incident had put Parth off from combing his hair. He wouldn't blame the poor guy.
"It isn't nearly as bad as last year, Kaus," Parth cajoled. "At least Professor Trelawney isn't acting out again."
"Shut up, Parthos."
He snickered as Parth scowled down at a sulking Kaustuki, his gaze wandering back to the table with the blue-clad bint who loved to set his teeth on edge. He wondered if this year might be different.
"Stop looking at her, Randhir," Kaustuki whispered in his ear.
His head whipped around to glare at his friends, both his friends, looking at him intently. Great, now they think he's a lovesick puppy.
"I don't know what you're talking about," he muttered.
The end of the new girl's introduction, and the scattered cheer at his House table when she stepped down towards them, snapped Randhir out of his thoughts. He watched as the girl, Tatiana, sat a few places down from Parth, her head moving around, studying her Housemates, before resting upon him. He sent her a friendly smile, nodding his head in acknowledgment.
Shock flooded through him, his eyebrows shooting up, as Tatiana Dimitrov winked back at him.

"Professor Flitwick rescheduled your detention with him for next week. He has some urgent business to attend to, I suppose. I was to inform you, Randhir," drawled Tatiana, the words rising and falling in her strange, lilting, voice.
"Is that all?" he snapped.
Her eyes narrowed at him, faint trails of rage spreading across her face. Her gaze fell back on Sanyukta, confusion taking dominance in those amber eyes that followed him around everywhere he went. Frankly, Ana creeped him out at times. She was more Slytherin, sometimes, than Gryffindor!
"No. No, I believe we're done here," she murmured, her gaze intent on the girl in his arms. Randhir grit his teeth, his eyes falling to look down as well. Sanyukta was visibly fuming, her crackling magic humming in the air around her, betraying the level of her aggravation. She was angry - the special kind she usually saved for their class arguments - her dark hair shining around her flushed face like a fallen angel's (I did not just think that...) halo. She was glorious.
Suddenly, warm, hazel eyes were looking back at him, the predominant ire overcome by this...this heart-wrenching emotion, this confusing grief, he couldn't fathom. What was wrong?
Turning away, distractedly noting Sanyukta's feeble attempts of pushing at his chest, he nodded at Ana and said, "Leave, Ana, we're done talking."
His gaze fell back on the witch in his arms. "You, on the other hand..." he whispered.

Sorting Hat: A magical witch's hat that determines the house a student is put in from the four - Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff.
Professor McGonagall: The Headmistress of Hogwarts after the Second Wizarding War. Previously, the Transfiguration Professor.
The Hall or the Great Hall: "The Great Hall in Hogwarts Castle is the main gathering area in the school located off the Entrance Hall.
