Lovvved highway...
Personally feel that Veera's character is possibly the strongest female lead from all the movies of Imitiaz...though there are similarities between geet, veera, heer, aditi (socha na tha) and meera..they all wanted to break out, do their own thing...whether it was personal quest or professional...
Alia did a good job, surprisingly...she was good IMO in the scenes where she had to break down and the one where she screams out at that disgusting uncle...it was tailor made for her it seems...though there is scope of improvement in many...but she wasnt as bad as I expected...
Randeep again..highly underrated and under recognised...in imtu's movies, the stark contrast between male and female leads...always work...intense, brooding male character with a dark past...did wonders yet again...this guy deserves a lot more👏
A R Rahman songs - just fit so beautifully in the whole movie.,..it flowed and added layers to some scenes...kahan hoon main and tu kuja was beautifully used...sooha sahaa too...implosive silence had a very mysterious feel to it...patakka guddi ofcoz is a show stealer
PS - me too love the male version more than the female one - ARR did wonders as a singer - the punches, the emphasis, the rock feel in the later part - a job well done
In terms of direction, it was probably Imtu's best so far...like he said in one of his interviews...he is showing off in this movie.,..and he has...so many shots/ scenes just stayed back with me after the movie...the one where Veera cries and laughs near the flowing river... beautiful.,...Mahaveer crying...the FBs...lovely depiction👏
I just felt the movie started slow...but picked up towards the interval..⭐️
All in all, probably one of the better films in the start of the year, (specially coming in after a massively disappointing gunday for me)⭐️

Since we are talking about the songs...I love these lines of Pathaka Guddi
Jugni rukh peepal da hoi
Jis nu pooje ta har koi
Jisdi fasal kisi na boyi
Ghar bhi rakh sake na koi

The lines are truly amazing probably because of the mention of the Peepal tree, how true...It's a tree which is worshipped and yet it can't be planted inside the house, as in the compounds because of the strength of it's roots. The roots of peepal tree are so strong that they damage the building around, the literally crack the land and weirder part no one plants this peepal tree, it's just the nature that carries it's seeds through crows etc...

ARR : I adore him!! Infact, I can kill for the combination of ARR and Mani Ratnam as Usernameloading has already mentioned about them
Wait I can even kill for Mani Ratnam+Illayaraja (If anyone knows him that is!) 😆

Supporting Cast:
Durgesh Kumar (as Aadoo), Pradeep Nagar (as Tonk), Saharsh Kumar Shukla (as Goru), Hemant Mahaur (as Kasana) and Shakeel Khan (as Sharaf) lend decent support. Reuben Israel is fair as M.K. Tripathi. Arjun Malhotra lends the necessary support in the role of Vinay, fianc of Veera. Naina Trivedi (as Amma), master Mohd. Kaif Humdum (as young Mahabir), baby Samar Mudasir Bakshi (as young Veera), Avtaar Sahani, Sandeep Leyzell, Mohit Rastogi, Rajeev Sharma, Vikram Seth, Dr. Vivek Rajpal, Sanjay Chouhan and Mohit Choudhary (as ACP Special Cell) provide fair support.

Wonderful observation, Crayon.
And I love your animated DP.
Rishta.com was fabulous. ❤️

Anyway, on the topic, Irshad Kamil is fantastic. This part of Patakha Guddi, which you highlighted, in a way foreshadows her journey and transformation. Beautiful. How she goes from the naive wide-eyed girl to the symbolic peepal tree- whom you cannot restrain in bondages of "tameez" and home anymore. It is so empowering.

P.S - I wish more people talked about the fabulous Durgesh Kumar. He pulls off the creepy-nice guy routine with such finesse, that you cannot help but admire him. The way he breaks into an impromptu bhangra during Veer'a Mashup- amazing.
His character had interesting layers in them as well. He is the standard creepy guy, but he is, again, the archetypal image of masculinity gone wrong in a society where women are nothing more than objects. The way he develops an easy friendship with Veera through the film, gestures to his layers. It is a society where men are supposed to view women in a certain light, and he is almost caged by that idea. When he learns to let go of his preconceives notions, he builds up a proper, non-creepy relationship with Veera, where she is a person, not just a body.

Rishta.com was, is and will always remain to be one of my most favourite T.V. series along with Sarabhai.
Kavi Shastri. I heart that guy.

Ok wait..what is this thread doing to me : I find people who disliked rockstar, people who liked Ghanchakkar(very rare 😆), who are travelling in Mahbir's world and people who like Rishta.com. THis thread is getting addictive now(It wasn't any less before btw) 😆

Versus:

Maula tera maali
O Hariyaali jungle waali

It's the journey from wilderness with God as the gardner(looking up to God to protect us) to a tree which is worshipped(thus blurring the lines between the self and God)

+++

Ainve lok-laaj ki soch soch ke
Kyun hai aafat daali

versus

Kaanch kanwaari, sharm utaari
Chaar pe bhaari laage
Hoke tez katari, aage chali chali

More obvious but beautiful, nonetheless..Irshad has just matched Gulzar as my favorite lyricist..never thought such a day would come

There is a scene in Imtiyaz's Highway', in which Alia is sitting on a rock in the middle of a potent river, that is overwhelming both in its flow and in its roar. She starts laughing uncontrollably, one that is soon overcome by tears. The soulful brilliance of being one with nature and the painful absurdity of life as she has lived it until then...she gets it. We get it as well, for it is not just her reflection at that moment but ours too (Even the guy next to me who was on the phone telling his friend "aa raha hoon' since intermission, paused for a few seconds). There is neither a background score or lines in that scene. Just a cut from her to the river and back. It is for moments like this that we go to the movies. Thank you, Mr. Ali.

Highway' is a simple film that is bound to be many things. More number of friends (than you would like), will talk about how they cant believe Alia was the same girl who was in SOTY'. Some will tell you they saw a lot of Jab we met' in this film. A few elites' will even tell you how the film is '15 mts longer than it should be'. Everyone will discuss the locations and Delhiites might fondly remember their drives to Spiti or Leh. And everyone will talk about Alia and her interpretation of this character, more than anything else. And not a single time would it be undeserved.

I hope they mention Aarti Bajaj, who dances with your mind and pulls out cuts that make this film almost genre-less. I hope many mention the Hariyanvi who plays the male lead so beautifully. In the scene at the bus stand where he smiles in the film for the first time, you can almost feel the actor's relief that a writer has finally given him a part that he could sink his teeth into. Or the original score. I feel this is one of Rahman's best as far as background scores go - something that he has always treated like Sachin would, his bowling - indifferently. I hope they mention the casting. And mention it many times, because a film like this relies on the world that the supporting cast creates, more than the protagonists who wander in it. The Durgesh Kumars (Aadoo) and the Pradeep Nagars (Tonk) of this film who dont even have an IMDB page yet, make you wonder how this director / casting director combo went so wrong with a leading lady famously in their last outing.

Above all, I hope many who have watched this film, remember it for the honesty of the writer, director. Nothing epitomizes that more than the last scene. What a way to call for the curtains! You can tell that this is a story told told almost exactly the way it was conceived. Much like the brownish water gushing out of an irrigation hose that Alia dips her face into in one of the scenes, this is pretty much direct from the ground. And that makes this film an experience' you should make time for. This is (like a famous motorcycle brand's tag line), a Trip'.
