Naku backed off on the double ! stumbled then balanced her herself. Dutta however rested his back on the bed, his legs folded on the edge of Kanta mai's bed. Casually he propped his back on his elbows and gazed at Baji near the door.

"whatever you saw Baji wasn't meant to be seen by the likes of you but ,then that is expected of you..what to do?have to live with your ways,.. erhh we were just going to come down" Dutta said dryly. Baji gambolled towards' Naku and consoled her as she withdrew in embarrassment.

" Naku ! shall I drop you at Gul Bahar.. who knows I get to spend a bit of quality time with Roops too, "he urged as he turned to look at Dutta ,for it was a plea to him really. Dutta smiled as he stood up and obliged his brother

"go then take her, and I'll head for my work". The three came down Dutta's wooden steps and Kala, Aye ,and Kanta mai, beckoned them. Naku informed mai that her room was ready and her belongings set up in the right places , and that she needed to head for her work. Kanta mai was now only preoccupied by her Dutta's happiness. She gazed at his somewhat withdrawn grave face, which she deducted might be due to the fact that Naku was now about to leave. Kanta felt herself in a situation where by ,she would have to suggest anything ! to deter Naku from leaving, and perhaps say something that would make her stay at Patil Nivas permanently!

" Naku you know I need assistance in my treatment of arthritis , would have been nice if you stayed here for good with me? blurted Kanta mai. Dutta's eyes twinkled at the prospect, but Naku , walked up to mai , knelt down by her side, held her hand and reasoned with her

"mai, you underestimate yourself , think back how you managed confidently ,back at the hivali. Besides over here, being with Aye Sahib and Kala Tai ,I am sure you will be pampered to no end. Mai, also Roops needs support at the shop, it's unfair to expect her to run it on her own..! gently explained Naku. She looked at Dutta who preferred to leave the decision with Naku ,although within himself he mused, would have be nice if what mai suggested came true. Wishful thinking but then again Naku was correct in going for the moment.

Naku left with Baji .. on her way out she gave Dutta a furtive look that Dutta hung on too till she disappeared round the corner. He turned to his mother and her sister as he showed his car keys that swung from his forefinger

"ok ladies I 'd best be on my way too" and he stepped forward , leant before them and felt their knees, and in return earned their blessings to have a good day ahead. Kanta mai's palm fell from his head to his shoulder and loving she asked him,

" what time will you return beta? and lunch? will you come for it? would be nice ..?she said with intensity . Dutta turned his eyes to Aye Sahib and then smiled back at mai. Aye Sahib , knew by his gaze that he wished for her to reply to her sister

" nooo noo Kanta , Dutta has no specific time of coming home, it's whenever his work allows him, he has all of Patil Wadi's safety to worry about.. and as for lunch ,he eats on the job ,am I right Dutta? Dutta chuckled and placed his hand gently on Kanta's knee

"never mind mai.. end of the day I do retun, you'll see me I promise! you just get the feel of your new home, as Krishna said, your own home ? Kanta couldn't control her sentiments..

"I remember.. Dutta, how Krishna told everyone, I was going to my son's house.."Dutta still crouched before her , moved his eyes from her face towards his Aye's face, she dabbed her eyes with the corner of her sari pallu, and Dutta shifted her attention now to his Aye Sahib

"there ,there.. Aye you should be happy your long lost sister is found and here with you now". Aye Sahib , sniffed and nodded as she watched him hauled himself onto his long legs, turned and walked out. Aye Sahib mused, as she heard the sound of his jeep drive off, I am happy for my sister, but my son Dutta, your Aye is happy your real mother has found you Dutta.. now only one wish I have before I die ..that you should find your mother too..

Seema smiled sideways at Ravi as he drove her to the nearby leisure centre for aerobics.She watched how his bicep knotted as he changed gear. Ravi concentrated ahead on the road and thought about the bashing he received at Dutta's hands. His hands gripped the steering hard , this Dutta has to be brought to his knees ,he carped. But straightaway came the reminder he needed to keep in mind

"see I told you Dutta would stand by me, had it not been for him things wouldn't have been ironed between us and babba..? pointed out Seema. Ravi was in a way grateful to her for knocking sense in him. Dutta needs to be kept in hand along with his girl .. Nakusha

"yes Seema , but you forget that your friend Nakusha too played her part well. Had it not been her quiet intervention, I suspect , he wouldn't have complied so easily.. Good compatibility they have.. Congenial" adds Ravi deviously. As for him ,he needs to act the role of the doting beau , lest she become wary of his real intentions

"Seema , it's good you look after your fitness , Ravi wants to see his stunning Seema fit as a fiddle! He says with a sided wink at her . Seema blushed and blurted out , smitten by him

" and I would spend my whole life being a spark in your eye ,Ravi! really , I feel so blessed to have you in my life.. it was so minus purpose before , after meeting you ,I seem to have direction! Ravi smiled, slowed down and pulled the handbrake up!

"and may I remind you my pretty ma'am your destination has arrived.. go now and beautify your self for me! ,he jumped out of the car went around and opened the door for her to disembark. With provocative flair she slid out and gave him a two finger peck from her lips to his smooth clean shaven cheek! Ravi rolled his eyes ,pulled his phone out and got in touch with Jhingar his boss!

"how much longer do I carry on with this charade! till I get my money? Jhingar yelled back

" you yapping a lot today you scum bag! you act till you don't kidnap the girl!

"but here my marriage has been set with her! boss! they expect my family to visit them for setting a date for sagai! what am I supposed to do next? protested Ravi and Jhingar replies

"you want the money don't you? use your educated brain and fish out some plausible excuse like your mother and family are out of town, visiting an ailing relative.. on their return, they 'll pop over! and listen! meanwhile ,carry on with your courtship! Unless you don't want the money! yelled Jhingar his boss and cut him out.. a miserable Ravi chewed his bottom life in misery..

Being a concerned parent Nana did speak to Ravi again and on hearing his side he decided he would exercise restrain for his daughters sake. But then nothing could deter him from contacting Dutta.

Dutta smiled at the words of Kanta mai who expected him home for lunch . He peeled back the plastic seal on top of his plain pasta snack. Hot food at lunch time only is a distant dream till Naku doesn't reside at Patil Nivas for good! he said aloud as he held his fast food pot. Before he could fork the cold pasta into his mouth, the landline in his office rang and the reception told him it was Nana tavde on the line

"Dutta! just spoke to that.. that Ravi! asked him about when his folks were coming over, do you know what he said to me? his folks are not in town? some cock and bull ! story he gave me Dutta! I have a right mind to call this whole thing off right now! bellowed Nana. Dutta stood up from his swivel chair and rested the pot of pasta on his desk

"look babba Tavde just calm down , I'll have a word with him you leave it to me..you call me like your son and then you don't even let me handle the situation .. shall I come over to be with you babba Tavde ? I can leave someone in charge here? asked Dutta much concerned over Tavde 's condition but fumed over Ravi. Nana felt supported and decided not to bother Dutta to come home.

Meanwhile Dutta did feel that Ravi needed to be given some form of reminder. Checked where the man was ?and found him outside the leisure centre, on the phone as usual.

" all set then your family ? for meeting Nana Sahib? Ravi reeled around surprised as he saw Dutta stood behind him, his hands rested on his sides, his face fairly business like but his eyes clearly militant. Ravi bowed his head and began to supply this Dutta with his excuse of which Dutta was fully aware of. Dutta moved forward , grabbed Ravi by his collars pushed his dark face into Ravi's cowered down one. But Dutta told him slowly and dangerously

"look you'd better pull your socks up Ravi , otherwise I'll skin you alive! don't make me do it! he wagged his finger in his face.

"Dutta! what a pleasant surprise! but what in heaven's name is the meaning of this? asked Seema as she pointed to Dutta's militant manner towards her would be. Dutta loosened his fingers over Ravi's collars and turned his angered face at Seema and suggested gravely

" that you'd better ask Ravi yourself? and then bitterly asked Ravi

"what kind of a man are you when you don't even bother the girl you love in the loop about developments in your life.. Ravi she needs to know! and I suggest on your way back you have some explaining to do! and with that Dutta gave Seema an over to you look !and walked back to his jeep and lurched back his frame on to the driver's seat. Before he drove off he saw Seema getting into the car with Ravi and he sincerely hoped that Seema gets to see the true side of Ravi rather than the side she wished to see in him.. that which undoubtedly clouded her vision. Dutta gulped and somehow felt responsible for both father and daughter.

A mother somehow senses, if her son has eaten or not. That Dutta didn't come home for lunch irked Kanata and as she ate the first morsel of lunch with her sister she couldn't help but express her displeasure. Aye Sahib smiled at her concern ,whilst Kala boiled it down to the fact that Dutta was a big boy who preferred to cause the least amount of fuss around him. But Kanta was not entirely satisfied ,and so after downing a glass of cold water to keep her hunger at bay, decided to phone the person who might be a bit more proactive in this matter , Naku!

Naku was pleased a phone call from mayi , she felt a bit guilty as it was, after leaving mai rightaway !despite the fact that mai clearly wished for her Nakusha to plant herself at Patil Nivas! but this what mai suggested she do, she would happily do and so like an obedient daughter, Naku phones her Sahib..

"look Naku this is not a good time for an idle chit chat.. not in the mood! carped Dutta over the phone

" this is not an idle chit chat Sahib..its a purposeful talk, she retorted

"then you'd better get on with it fast! have to get back to work! looks like it's my job to sweep other people's mess! he roared ,and Naku held the phone away from her ear

"ooh hooo.. what's wrong with you, tell me haven't you eaten yet? she asked keenly

"nope haven't ! why you want to feed me? thought you looked a bit deprived when Kanta mai fed me? isn't that so? he suddenly felt temperamentally diverted. Naku giggled and thought got you Sahib.. as she continued

" look Sahib , your home is not the other end of the world ,you could go home easily ,grab a bite to eat and then return to work quite effortlessly ,can't understand why you don't? Dutta moved his head to one side , narrowed his eyes and replied

" you know everything about me , then how come you don't know the answer to this one Naku?

" it's not the answer I am worried about.. but have to admit I am wondering now that are you not going to coming home after we" she said and went silent

"speak up Naku.. why have you gone quiet? tell me.. after what ? he teased romantically ,and tapped his fingers on the steering as he heard how she tittered and giggled..

"after I set up home at your residence for good Sahib " she mumbled and heard him chuckle

"ohh ayeee, Naku! after you set up home with me permanently , it's not lunch that 'll be coming home for".. he confessed bluntly ,and Naku just kept quiet she didn't wish to go into the nitty ,gritty of what he hinted at.. now she only needed to check what mai wished to know, if he had eaten ?

" never mind about that Sahib.. you just tell me if you have eaten? folks at your home worry about your irresponsible eating habits! Mai rang me just now to find out", Naku revealed, and heard he sighed

" ooh so it was on mai's behest that you rang me , and not because your heart told you to do so? must be losing my charm with you Nakushaahhh.. he moaned . Naku laughed shyly and bit her lower lip..

"if you are up and about then come over to Gul Bahar and find out if your charm has worn off or not?she invited

Dutta smiled devilishly .. she circled his palm over his belly. Empty belly actually! babba Tavde didn't let him finish his bite pot of fast snack pasta.Now he gets an invite from her.. he would be a prat! to let it pass.

So not before long ! he landed up on her door step.. a starving man ,greedy for her love. The smell of roasted semolina reached his nostrils and he inhaled the palatable dish which he speculated with some delight, might just be, halwa? But as soon as he entered the shop , it was Krishna who leapt at him from behind the bunch of shelved potted house flowers!

"Dutta Bhau! my hero! he yelled as he ran and hugged Dutta around his waist. Dutta blessed his head and held it up and he looked down in to the animated eyes of this boy in whom Dutta saw himself..

"wrong way Krishna , you are my hero! a little life with promises of bigger things to come! said Dutta affectionately. Naku heard him and popped her head out of the little kitchen and called out too, in disciplined delight

"Sahib you?.. she sounded surprised and Dutta looked at Krishna , shook his head with a sarcastic smile, as he jerked his head Naku's way.. smart Krishna caught on and chattered away loudly

"Tai ,why you look so astonished? I bet you called my Bhau over to taste your halwa? sniggered Krishna and Dutta mock smacked the back of his head, with an admonishment ..

"ayeee Krishna! don't tease your Tai.. she would never do that! it's your famished Bhau who smelt her cooking and came all the way from work to taste her home cooked fares.., go now on your way! and finish off what you were doing! he ordered Krishna and turned and nodded at Roops, and asked

"you alright Roops? met that idiot of a brother of mine??.. erhh, he was rather keen to drop Naku at the shop this morning instead of me.." Roops wafted over , with a narrow spout watering in hand and she laughed

"yes Bhau he came! helped with moving and arranging some fresh flowers and plants.. you see I am training him to be helpful ! Dutta 's eyes softened, as he replied

" Baji to me is the biggest helping hand in my life Roops.. always there by me in need ,should I need his assistance.. it's like he's a habit with me Baji my bro.. a habit that Dutta could never get rid off.. " Roops laughed at his words and added with a wee wink

" look's like Naku is in for some tough competition! . Dutta looked at her and replied as an older Bhau..

" keep in mind Roops, there is no competition in family.. each member has his or her own value according to the role they are put in.. so Naku needn't worry about her brother in law Baji.. and as for you Roops.. you will always qualify for my respect as my vahini..got that" ,he said with his finger point upwards..

Naku squared her shoulders in the kitchen and her heart swelled up with great pride.. ooh Sahib! you say the nicest and wisest of things .. really..

"really what Naku? she heard his guttural voice as she reeled around from the stove and faced him looking quizzically into her green doe eyes..

" Sahib.. erhhh, I .. was just... I .. was," fumbled Naku as she saw him walk towards her slowly

" will you move on woman! .. and slowly he stood before her,close to her and perked up her chin his folded forefinger underneath it

"well here I am Naku, will you feed me the halwa or shall I feast on your pretty face.. it may fill my soul , but Naku.. my belly will still be empty like a whistle! only had one forkful of cold pasta",he said with a deliberately sullen face seeking her sympathy. Naku being Naku.. tenderly moved both her tiny hands and cupped his rather rosy stubble cheeks.. as she gazed up into his hooded contracted lion like intense eyes

"ohhh you poor dear.. halwa and puri for you, freshly made.. Dutta slowly clasped his fingers behind her lower back and gently pulled her closer.. and intently gazed into her wide green eyes.. and mumbled

"can the feeding be delayed a bit Naku? my appetite seems to have gone a bit hay wire.. you distract me Nakushaaa" he said.. naughtily.. But Naku pressed her palms on his chest and pleaded with her eyes.. that which he totally by passed and raised one eye brow at her ,puzzled .. why was she showing attitude ?.. Naku pointed to the kitchen door . Dutta blinked his eyes and gradually bent his head and pressed his warm full lips on her smooth peachy complexioned skin, then dropped his hands and watched her move to the island worktop in the centre of the kitchen . Slowly she dished out the halwa and he raised his palm to the puri accompaniment and refused it..

"why not Sahib? she asked as she broke off a morsel and took in a bit of halwa and offered him across the work top

"I'll feed you if you want Sahib? you wont get your fingers oily" she giggled and he nodded and as she fed him, at the second morsel he bit on into her fingers!

"ouccch! Sahib.. here eat your self! she turned and moved away. Dutta stopped her with his arm and slowly pushed it along and folded her in it.. with a smile he spooned some halwa and turned it close to her rose bud mouth

" sometimes .eat from my hands too Naku... and she received it and chewed with a shy smile on her face.

Naku noticed he appeared preoccupied.. as he spooned the rest of the bowlful

" is something the matter Sahib? she asked and he nodded ..

"yes Naku the matter is that jerk Ravi ! now says his family is out of station.. so no family from his side yet... what is up to Naku.. ? baffles me , and worries me to no end! that I was the one who pressed babba Tavde into this" Dutta off loaded upon her, as he ran and dug his fingertips across his forehead .She looked at her Sahib and she could see he needed support and she stretched her arm towards him and felt his hand that rested on the work top ..

"Sahib ,.it wasn't you just alone.. it was my idea as well you support them so don't want you to feel that you are alone in this one .. Naku will always be with in need and in terms of support hope you believe in this.. ?

" I do Naku.. but for the very first time in my life I fear , what will I do if this Ravi character dupes all of us? he shared and Naku too inserted

" my fear is the effect I'll have over Seema herslf..she will go to pieces ,and I shudder to think how you will take it? Dutta suddenly gets up as if to leave. and Naku grabs his hand and stands up too and stand's before him. he sees the fear in his heart reflected in her eyes too.. her green eyes appear darkened with some ill omen. Overcome he gently gathered her in his strong arms and told her firmly

"look nothing ill will happen , you pray to Bappa ,he listens to you doesn't he.. then pray that he takes life and it's direction in his hands.." and with that he dropped his arms , moved away from her ,and muttered on his way out..

"thanks for feeding the hungry bird Naku.. and try not to miss me too much". Naku watched him as he slammed shut the door of his jeep and she mused.. it's impossible not to miss you Sahib.

It was very noticeable at the dinner table , that mai over loaded Dutta's plate with food. He looked down at it helplessly as he preferred to be silent ,lest he sounded rude and brash. May be she wished she had a son and she thinks of me as the son she wished for and never had. Now she pretends I am! then it's best to grant her , her joy.. After all Dutta .. an orphan as it really so happens to be, stands alone..ready to be every body's or any body's son.. He looked at Aye Sahib and suddenly choked! How can he say that .. he Dutta is Aye Sahib's son!..

He also pretended to be asleep , but noticed how the tall figure with one arm folded behind her back ,would stealthily ,come into his room and tuck his feet that stuck out from underneath his duvet .. then silently bend over his frame and kiss his forehead ...

His heart missed a beat ,yet he felt a certain tranquillity that sent him into peaceful slumber straightaway ..he must remember to tell her, that her good night kiss works wonders for his sleep ,he sleeps like a baby... to be continued.. Hamlet53 19.12.25

The whole UD is nice. Dutta is enjoying loads of love from two mothers with a lot of food. I enjoyed the scene when Kanta mai tried to deter naku from leaving. Dutta's lunch at gul bahar reminded LTL.
