Part 15
Dutta's question boomed across the dimly lit garden. Seema and Ravi parted immediately, but stood close enough ,as they turned around their heads and looked at the tall figure of Dutta. Seema then distanced herself from Ravi, but groped for his hand and held it. Dutta twitched his jaw and slowly progressed towards them, stopped and stood with his legs parted a little. He glared at Ravi and dangerously questioned him
"what is the meaning of this behaviour Ravi? you were asked to be Seema's body guard not make a pass at her person! and before he knew it, Ravi received a vicious right hook swing of Dutta's fist on his jaw. Ravi lurched to the side with the impact but was stopped from falling by Seema. Dutta pierced her face with his narrowed eyes as she screamed in his furious face
"stop Dutta!! Ravi didn't do anything I didn't want! Dutta lunged forward ,grabbed Ravi's collar , pulled him out of Seema 's supportive arms and landed another forceful punch on Ravi's jaw .This time Dutta hurled him to one side on the ground. Seema stopped Dutta as he lurched forward, leaned and was about to pull Ravi up again to rough him up even further
"Dutta! stop ! you have to listen to Seema! Dutta! look at me Dutta! listen to me! She begged as she grabbed his strong arms that shook with rage. She looked up into his darkened eyes and pleaded for his mercy . Dutta stared back into her face as her mouth moved
"Dutta.. I love him, don't attack him , he didn't do anything".. Dutta heard her, grabbed her shoulders and pushed her aside roughly. Then lowered his upper half on Ravi flattened on the ground .Dangerously he stared into his traumatized and cowered eyes. Then slowly Dutta growled like a ferocious animal
"she saved you Ravi, otherwise you would be in the heavenly realms today.. any way you look so pathetic! beaten to a pulp .. Dutta doesn't kick dead dogs! he growled, turned his face, and spat on the ground. Slowly he levelled up, backed off, turned around and walked towards Seema. He faced her, his arms held by his side.
"why Seema? why of all the people you picked on Ravi?
"why not Dutta? what's wrong with Ravi? she challenged Dutta
" what's right about him? he questioned her instead
"I love him Dutta. that should be enough. Nothing else matters"
"not even if Tavde babaa , doesn't know about what nonsense is going behind his back?
"Dutta , I was going to tell him, that you have to believe"
"Seema, how you have behaved ,leaves me confused about what I should believe in, or what not? and if you ask me , you haven't told your babaa ,because you know he'll never approve of you getting together with a man like Ravi?
"you keep disapproving him, Dutta. Yet you cannot tell me why? what's wrong with him? argued Seema. Dutta bowed his head and replied
"what's wrong is that you know nothing about his background.. His family? his parentage? You know it's not him alone you will be linked to Seema .. It's his family too. About whom you don't have a clue. Take it from me , your babaa , including my own family will want to know more about his back ground"
" it's him that matters the most. If you ask me you are complicating matters for me . You always stood by me Dutta . This time too, Seema asks you to stand by me. I want you to.
"you are not thinking this whole nonsense through Seema. You seem in such a hurry. This Ravi character is not the last bloke on earth for you , he cannot be. Let babba find someone else for you. Let babaa arrange it. You take a hasty step. I forbid you to go any further! commanded Dutta. Seema flashed her eyes at him and hissed back at him
"when you decided to pick Naku.. did I question you? no! I supported you Dutta ! like I always did ever since I was a child. I believed you were always right! you could never go wrong! despite the issues you had and still have! so don't support me if you don't want to!but this time I ,Seema will support my love for Ravi myself singlehandedly ! she dug her heels in. Dutta looked at her in fury, shook his head and then turned and walked away from Seema and Ravi back into the house.
Naku pottered about in the kitchen doing a final wipe down to the work surface. Once finished she paused a while and wondered if Seema and him had returned. She too hadn't really interacted with Seema much this evening . So she stepped out of the kitchen and was shocked to see Dutta with his sherwani collar undone , all flustered and het up as he marched into the house through the French doors of the lounge. One look at Naku and he grabbed her arm and pulled her to the area which was away from public eye
"Naku , that Seema is out to rebel against babaa Tavde .I showed them exactly what I thought of their damned actions" he rumbled hoarsely. Naku faced him and raised her palm in his face and said calmly
"what have you done Sahib? hope nothing untoward"
"it's not half as bad at what that girl is up to Naku! she tells me she is bloody in love! with that body guard of hers! how can that be ? he doesn't deserve a girl like Seema! she's Nana Tavde's daughter and him! what is he? a mere body guard !about whom nothing is unknown. Totally unacceptable! what am I going to tell her father? he relied on me getting someone professional for his daughter! someone who would guard her not take advantage of her! he fumed.
"oohh, Sahib.. what can I say except that Seema is lucky to have some like you in her life who looks out for her with such earnestness.. but tell, me where are they at the moment?
"in hell! where else they should be! growled Dutta , turned and walked off. Naku grabbed his arm and jogged him slightly and he turned his head slowly and cast down his angry eyes at her grip on his arm. Naku loosened her fingers and pulled back her hand and looked up into his face. beseechingly
"Sahib, don't be facetious, just tell me where are they? are they still in the garden? or have they gone? Dutta realized what Naku pointed out and to avoid further aggravation of this issue he swiftly turned to her
" Naku, they haven't gone.. go knock some sense into her .They are in the garden.. and ummmh that character Ravi may need treatment .. I swiped my fist in his face! Dutta said swiftly and then hurriedly glided away ,one arm tucked behind his back. Naku watched his dark imposing shadow as it disappeared. Why did he need to resort to violence? was there any need? Naku was disappointed in his knee jerk reaction, looked bad professionally. However it feels warm and wanted now that he has asked her to manage this crisis situation actively, mused Naku as she headed for the kitchen to get the first aid kit.

It's a good thing Dutta had prepared her mentally what state Ravi was likely to be in. Seema ran to her and fell into her embrace seeking her support. Naku patted her back and then stared at Ravi. He needed medical attention and Naku moved aside and gave Seema the band aid kit. There was no point in Naku playing the nurse when Seema was around. Naku sat on the grass and watched how Seema tended to Ravi, wiped and swabbed the cuts and bruises that her Sahib had etched cruelly on the poor man's face. Seema turned to Naku when she had finished
" do you know what happened here Naku? only confided in Dutta who I always went to for cover since a child.. Seema cried and then sniffed and carried on..
"and look Naku today when I asked for his support in my love for love. Dutta went ballistic! How easily he forgot our friendship since child hood.. he beat up Ravi instead, Naku! told his childhood friend Seema loud and clear that I am on my own in this one! wept Seema. Naku nodded and calmly replied
"Seema, it was Sahib that alerted me and sent me here to offer Ravi first aid and to offer you support. Seema take it from me , Sahib cares a lot for you. if at all he seems to have lost it , it's because he wants to see you happy and secure in the future , not just now. if you ask me , the immediate thing you both need to do is put your babaa in the loop. He needs to know Seema, he is your father. I suspect your babaa must be under pressure already, he is like having to do dual roles. Think of his predicament. If you don't seek his blessings in this major decision of your life, then questions will also be raised about your relationship with your father too. That perhaps he was unapproachable to you thus forcing you to do your own thing" Naku attempted to reason as best as she could.
Ravi listened attentively. He should have figured out that this Dutta was a close friend. So close that he would turn violent to protect Seema. It was stupid of him to appear so relaxed , moota Jhingar is such a fool to have suggested that I play the love card. Little does he know it's not as easy as it sounds. Ravi sighed, he has to be seen in pain and discomfort. Also appear understanding towards what Naku is saying. She seems to know Dutta's moods and turns, hence best to be on good terms with her .. Ravi mused and then with some feigned distress, said
"Seema, Naku is absolutely right. May be we have been hasty we should have sought Tavde Sahib's support first. I feel very low ,in terms of being his employee.. of having almost stabbed him in his back..." , he deceived. But then Seema interrupted him and till she does, he will lie low under cover and carry on striving for the money that his family needs!

It's his mother he wanted ,as Dutta came to the lounge and reached out for Aye Sahib's hand and walked her away to another settee and explained to her the developments with Seema. As expected, aye Sahib too was concerned about the effect it was bound to have upon her husband's best friend. Dutta also told her that he had roughed up Ravi .. and if he was to come before Nana Sahib, he would surely want to know what had transpired? Aye Sahib suggested that Dutta should perhaps give Nana Sahib such a story that can somewhat may impress Nana Sahib by Ravi. Dutta thought about his mother's suggestion and then questioned her
"but that's not telling the truth Aye Sahib? I beat that.. Ravi .. but Aye Sahib explained.
"look Dutta lets also focus on Seema. She claims to love the man. Now you surely want Nana Sahib to approve of him , rather than kick him out! don't you? so do as I ask you to do. think of Seema's happiness ." explained Aye Sahib.
Dutta listened , there was no point in arguing ,Aye had spoken. As her adopted son he will act upon her wishes, mused Dutta and bumped into Naku..
"hummm? so I see you have returned.. hope you knocked some sense into them Naku..?
" I did Sahib, Seema has tended to his wounds and I too have suggested especially to Seema she has to come clean with her father." Dutta moved forward and reached out for her hand ,tenderly gazed into her eyes and acknowledged
"look Naku thanks for standing up for Seema on my behest." Naku smiled and responded
"Sahib, no need to thank me.. you forget that Seema is also a valued customer of Gul Bahar.. since I found that she has family ties with you too , I have grown fond of her too. Sahib we both take an interest in her welfare.. she knows ,it's now up to her to do what she thinks is right? Dutta let go of Naku's hand and muttered as he made walked past her and went back into the garden.
Both Ravi and Seema , stood silently and waited as Dutta's imposing figure headed towards them. Dutta stopped right before them ,his hands on his hips
"relax now Seema.. it's up to you now to decide which direction you wish to take. Me and Naku ,and my family are there for you.. but I firmly believe that you can lead a horse to water ,but you can't make it drink it.. so the ball is now in your court.." Ravi piped up the nerve and replied
" Dutta Sahib , we are both ready to speak to Nana Sahib.. it's just that I am a little embarrassed to go before him in this condition.. he might draw negative conclusions" Dutta glared at him and then looked at Seema and explained
"you needn't worry about that ! you just get yourselves ready to appear before your babaa ,Seema.. I'll need to go in and speak to him before he kicks up a fuss! He asked ages ago to be taken home.. you come back into the lounge after a few minutes! and Dutta went in

Nana was getting restless and he waited for his driver and daughter to turn up, so all could go home. Dutta saw him and progressed closer to him , held his arm and took him to the side.
"have to say something important to you babba.. about Seema? began Dutta Nana as expected instantaneously became worried and demanded to know what was wrong? Dutta gulped , he had to handle the matter carefully as his Aye had suggested, focus on Seema..
"nothing is wrong with Seema babaa Tavde, but things can turn sour between you two.. babaa Seema has found someone she loves".. Nana's eyes flew open and he challenged and blamed himself
"why didn't I know it was coming Dutta? See if I was her mother ,I would have been a bit more susceptible.. Seems as her father couldn't see it in her eyes. Was too busy in my own life? Dutta found it painful to see this strong father going to pieces. He had to gather Tavde babba .. Veer him back to the person Seema has chosen, rather than going into why he wasn't aware of Seema's emotional attachment? Dutta would have to draw his attention. But common sense prevailed and Nana felt his ,moustache and glowered at Dutta
"I suppose you know who the bloke is too? he enquired. Dutta nodded and doubled his chin
"I do Tavde babba , and you do too..? Dutta paused and allowed Nana himself to work out who the person could be? but a pregnant pause followed and Dutta began to worry , and tried to remember his Aye had said , to focus on Seema..
"Tavde babba , it's Seema's happiness that is at stake ? Nana became short now and demanded
"Dutta if you know who the bloke is .. then tell me . I can't think who? or do you want me to further wait for Seema to tell me ?please Dutta consider you like my own son! so I implore you to tell me who the man is?
"it's Ravi.. babba ..? he blurted out .. there was no point in beating around the bush .
Nana's reaction was tremendous shock and Dutta tried to keep him calm as much as possible. as expected he did query the man's parentage and status ? Dutta reminded him to have faith in his daughter. Seema was brought up by him, and as such she would definitely avoid going against his wishes. But he impressed upon Tavde too
" babba Tavde , I told you the man's name so you can hear her out babaa.. after all she is no stranger to you .Besides in my opinion babaa , Seema has her special needs.. she is motherless to put it bluntly.. you know I don't mince my words? said Dutta with a frown
"special needs Dutta? my foot.. and you.. you are an orphan , you seem to manage. Besides Seema ,she was never alone! she had me and all of you so.. I don't know how I'll feel when I hear her out as you suggest! rumbled Nana .Dutta dismissed it as knee jerk reaction of a sore father.. Dutta now waited for the culprits till they arrived, before a father's court..
Eventually the two turned up . Seema looked a true picture of a guilty child. She attempted to get closer to her father ,but he raised his palm and deterred her affection. Nana noticed an injured and head bandaged Ravi, and waited for his daughter to speak her piece.
" babba , I just wanted to say that I love you the most in this world? she began and Nana scowled at Ravi and replied
"and look what you replace the man you love with.. this jerk! Ravi! a complete and an utter unknown"
"babaa why can't you see your one and only daughter.. motherless daughter actually! loves the man..his station and influence , power does not matter to me in the least.. what your Seema did ,babaa she did it for herself! me! what did I have in life? no mother! no brothers and sisters.. so I went out and found myself someone.. you! babaa were just to busy in your charity work.. only you forgot to give your child what she needed ..quality time.." Dutta couldn't bear the humiliation of his father's friend
"that's enough Seema! you said your piece .. let me now show you what a father can do for his daughters happiness".. he turned and pointed his arm towards Ravi
"babba Tavde.. you see the state this man is in? well we didn't want to alarm you ,but some thugs broke through my security systems in the garden and we reckon they came for Seema .. it was Ravi who fought them and protected her babaaa.. a man who can protect a woman.. says something about him babba . Your main preoccupation in life is Seema ,babaa. well if you ask me , I would say consider this ,that he did his job with some commitment. So ,babba consider what Seema suggests. Of course I am in no position to demand a decision from you right now, it's for you to mull it over as father and daughter. So I would say, go home now.." and he turned to Ravi..
"take them home Ravi, and rest if needed.. it's back to normal duty for you tomorrow.. and a tip from me do contact your family and arrange a meeting between yourself and Nana Sahib,so matters between yourself and Seema can progress further" said Dutta and then moved to Nana Sahib who put his arm around Dutta's wide shoulders and said to Aye Sahib
" you are indeed blessed to have a son like Dutta.. proper dependable son material he is?
Aye Sahib smiled and caught Kanta bai's expression. She smiled approvingly and seemed to acknowledge that she might have borne him but Aye Sahib was the one who reared him up to be what he is now.. blue blooded
Before they left Seema stopped and held on to both Dutta and Naku's hands together and said
" you two are both great individuals ,but together you are a support network.. thank you Dutta.."
Dutta smiled and felt his stubble and then sided his eyes to Aye Sahib ,who saw them off. For deep inside Dutta knew on the face of it, he may have saved the day, but the real credit of the made up story ,that goons were warded off by Ravi.. was Aye Sahib's idea.. used as a small lie to win Nana Tavde's support.. for Seema.

Aye Sahib, thought it best that Dutta himself should drive home Naku and her side of the family. She ideally wished for Dutta to see where his real mother resided, and hoped that Dutta himself would be the one to suggest that his mother should now move over to Patil Nivas. Aye Sahib felt confident that Dutta would be able to deal with the issue. However she prayed that his mother wouldn't put up much resistance against being rehoused..
Naku was sensible enough to allow his mother to sit by him as he drove. He gave his mother.. maayi.. sided looks to ensure she sat comfortably. Naku he gave besotted looks via the rear mirror. Naku too kept her eyes fixed on the back of his broad head and wide shoulders. It was nice to be now, formally connected to him. by name to his name.. for which, she still waited for and she sighed. Whenever Bappa wills it .It shall be done. Very soon she reached their house. Ram Sita hivali.. Dutta just parked before it and looked at the traditionally solid building. So this was where Naku ,Roops and above all maayi lived. It was preposterous that she should have to live here all alone... didn't make sense to him. Maayi was Aye Sahib's long lost younger sister, what was the point in staying here, by herself? He had to intervene. He was positive Aye Sahib and the rest of his family.. yes his adopted family would want him to be proactive, regarding this issue. He took her by surprise.. maayi and questioned her with some right that his Aye Sahib had given to him.
"maayi. I think you should come and live at Patil Nivas. it's your Tai's house. You now know that you have your very own family , other than Naku and Roops. There is no need for you to be living here like a caretaker. I am sure Roops and Naku too will back my decision and get some other caretaker for their hivali.. So maayi tonight you pack your bags and tomorrow Dutta will come and take you from here forever.." he said rather emotionally. Maayi too couldn't refuse her boy. Still she had concerns about the children she gave free tuitions too.
"for that maayi, tomorrow I will arrange for a teacher to reside here and your wish for free tuition classes to be given to children will be carried on.. so be ready maayi.. leave it to this Dutta, think of me as your son and trust me.. come let me see you to the door. Then he turned to Naku, Roops and Krishna..
"I suggest you three spend the night here. help maayi to pack, I'll drop you to the shop myself tomorrow"
After all had gone in Dutta faced Naku at the door step and reached out for her hands. Gazed tenderly into her wide green doe eyes and kissed every feature of her face with his deep set lion like eyes, and spoke in his guttural voice
"so Naku , all's well that ends well.. that's how the saying goes, but why do I feel incomplete ..as I leave you here ? Naku smiled bashfully and replied with a slant to her bottom lip
"Sahib, I too feel incomplete about letting you leave from here without me. But Sahib shall we agree that we both will join our incompleteness and make it into a fullness of one issue. That till we don't meet again, we shall me be thinking about each other.." she replied softly and bashfully and pulled her finger tips back from his. But he hastily pressed upon them with his slender fingers, clearly unwilling to let go off her. She looked up into his dark hooded deep set eyes and his eyes melted into a far-away glazed expression. They spoke of self- imposed delay in parting from a loved one. Naku blinked nervously and whispered
"Sahib , you really must go.. before someone opens this door for me, she pleaded
"hummm, you're right Naku.. seems a bit stupid to leave now and return here again after a few hours, me thinking I too should crash here tonight.." her eyes flew open
" are you saying you're spending the night here? he chuckled
"nope ,not even if you begged me Naku, I only spend the night if I have to in Gul bahar's tiny coped up stockroom! and with that he turned on his heels and moved towards his parked black jeep.. Naku stayed still and slowly turned her body and watched him as he drove off.. till the red glow of his black jeep camouflaged into the dark night.. to be continued Hamlet53 28.11.15
