Aligarh director Hansal Mehta hits back at Priyadarshan, calls his statement disturbing and insensitive

By Anusha Iyengar | Published: April 8, 2017 3:21 pm

Filmmaker and Jury Chairperson Priyadarshan made some shocking statements about why he didn't consider Aamir Khan for the awards to why Aligarh didn't even make it to the top 89 list of films that were considered for the awards. In an interview with Mumbai Mirror, he said," This year regional films, the Marathi, Bengali and Malayalam films in particular, were far better than the ones made in Bollywood. Most of them were not just entertaining potboilers but touched on significant social issues too. Aligarh did not make it to the final list of 89 films, which the jury saw. That list had mostly regional films many of which were really good."

Hansal Mehta reacted to this statement with a tweet and you will definitely agree with him on this one. The director said in his tweet," This statement is disturbing and insensitive. It makes you worry and wonder about LGBTQ rights and their absence in the current mindsets as social problems. Priyadarshan Sir, Aligarh did not meet the standards set by you and your jury, I accept that. But your views on homosexuality not figuring as a fantastic social issue rankles."

Edit:

Akshay Kumar's Holiday director A.R.Murgadoss calls it biased

Director AR Murugadoss had made a scathing attack on the winner of the National Award. Everyone knew whom it was asked at which makes it all the more controversial.

It is a wide known knowledge by now that Akshay Kumar has won National Award for Best Actor. While that in itself was problematic the bigger problem was director Priyadarshan as head of jury. His selection of winner was questionable but his words backing the winner were even worse. Murugadoss clearly called out the bias and partiality of jury. In the past he had made similar remarks when popular Malayalam movie Premam failed to bag any awards. As his comments have resonated with majority on both occasions, many are praising him for such an open stance.

Murgadoss took to twitter to express his dissappointment.

He was indeed the most deserving
Then Aamir or BigB or even Salman...but this was completely biased and not even any Akshay fan would have thought about this in their right mind

Friends with benefits: Did NFA jury chairman Priyadarshan unfairly reward his buddies Akshay Kumar and Mohanlal?

The friendship shared by director Priyadarshan with Akshay Kumar and Mohanlal is not a secret in the entertainment industry. So far, the successful filmmaker has been associated with Akshay in six Bollywood movies, including Hera Pheri, Garam Masala, Bhagam Bhag, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, De Dana Dan and Khatta Meetha, while he has helmed over 35 films with Lal in the lead role.

Now, with the announcement of 64th National Film Awards, netizens are saying "when Priyadarshan is the jury chairman, how can he not consider his besties?" It has to be noted that the Bollywood star has been selected as the best actor for his performance in the Hindi movie Rustom, and Mollywood superstar has been honoured with the Special Jury award considering his roles in the films Janatha Garage, Pulimurugan and Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol.

Though both Mohanlal and Akshay have performed well in the movies, netizens have been sharing few funny memes highlighting that their friendship is the sole reason why they could easily bag the prestigious awards this year. "Has Priyadarshan misused his job?," ask few netizens who don't seem to be very happy with the award winners' list. "Lol, Priyadarshan was the jury of the #NationalFilmAwards and you are asking why akki wins," another netizen comments.

Apart from Mohanlal and Akshay, even Tirru, who has worked with Priyadarshan in a few movies, has been selected as the best cinematographer for capturing the visuals of Suriya's 24. Few social media users have raised the question if this too is due to their friendship!

Meanwhile, when it comes to the award given to Mohanlal, another big question comes up. How is the Jibu Jacob directorial Munthirivallikal Thalirkumbol, released in 2017, even in the list since 64th National Film Award is given to films that have hit the theatres only in 2016?

Poor Akki. He jumped the gun...now his award will go down as a huge joke like Saif and Arjun's with no one believing he deserved it. What's the point even when it doesn't bring you the respect that it should? It's not that career booster then.
He should not have lobbied or gotten his BFF Priyadarshan to give it to him in a year when there were clearly far better performances, but rather should have waited for a year in which he was a clear choice. If he was that impatient, he should asked for it for Airlift, not Rustom which most critics trashed. 😕

..and maybe he should now call Priyadarshan and ask him to shut up because he's not making things better.
