Acclaimed filmmaker Zoya Akhtar has addressed the criticism surrounding her upcoming directorial venture, "The Archies," which garnered mixed reactions upon the release of its first glimpse. The Indian adaptation of the beloved Archie Comics faced backlash from fans who questioned the portrayal of Indian characters in a storyline set in 1964. Zoya Akhtar has responded to the criticism, emphasizing the beauty of India's diverse population and challenging narrow notions of appearance and identity.

In an interview at the Netflix global fan event TUDUM in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Zoya Akhtar candidly discussed the criticism surrounding "The Archies." Responding to claims that the characters did not appear Indian enough, especially considering the 1964 setting, Zoya challenged the notion of a singular Indian look. She defended the portrayal of characters with different skin tones, stating that fair-skinned individuals are also an integral part of India's cultural fabric.

Zoya highlighted the beauty of India's diversity by referencing iconic figures like Hrithik Roshan, Rajinikanth, Diljit Dosanjh, and Mary Kom, who represent the multitude of appearances found within the Indian populace. Zoya Akhtar explained her decision to maintain the story's historical context, deviating from a modern interpretation. She expressed her desire to capture the essence of a simpler, more innocent time, reminiscent of her personal experience with Archie Comics. Zoya aimed to resonate with young adults today while staying true to the comic's charm and appeal.

"The Archies" boasts an ensemble cast comprising several talented debutants. Among them are Suhana Khan, daughter of Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan, Khushi Kapoor, the younger daughter of late Sridevi and producer Boney Kapoor, and Agastya Nanda, grandson of Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan. These young actors bring their individual talents and inherit the legacy of their celebrated families to the film, adding excitement to the project.
