The making of Mauja Hi Mauja: Imtiaz Ali narrates the struggle to keep the beat alive
Shahid Kapoor and Imtiaz Ali

Imtiaz Ali's cinematic journey often finds its roots in Punjab, a place close to his heart. From iconic characters like Geet in "Jab We Met" to the vibrant melodies of "Mauja Hi Mauja" and "Katiyan Karun," Imtiaz's films are infused with the essence of Punjab and its language.

His latest project, "Amar Singh Chamkila," delves into the life of the renowned Punjabi singer and his wife, Amarjot Kaur. Chamkila's electrifying music and tragic end make for a compelling narrative, drawing audiences into the vibrant world of Punjabi folk music.

Reflecting on his past work, Imtiaz Ali shared an intriguing anecdote about the creation of "Mauja Hi Mauja" during a recent interview with Netflix India.

He said, “When we were composing the song Mauja Hi Mauja at that time nobody was able to understand anything, but because Irshad Kamil is from Punjab, he said that Mauja Hi Mauja would be fun. It felt nice, the sound was great. When someone says it like this, you get the meaning. And then he wrote the song and a lot of people said that they are not able to understand a single word of it. ‘What is he saying? Why is he saying this? It’s not a Punjabi film.’ But we liked it and the song was loved by people.”

While "Jab We Met" remains a beloved classic, Imtiaz Ali continues to push boundaries with each project. The film's enduring popularity is a testament to its timeless romance and memorable characters, particularly Geet, portrayed by Kareena Kapoor Khan.

"Amar Singh Chamkila" promises to be a poignant exploration of a legendary figure in Punjabi music, with Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra leading the cast. Produced by Mohit Choudhary, Select Media Holdings LLP, Saregama, and Window Seat Films, the film is poised to captivate audiences with its blend of music, drama, and emotion.
