Review: 'Trolls Band Together' is just the candy floss you need to sweeten your lives as BroZone reunites

I want a wisecracking friend like Tiny Diamond around me almost constantly.

Trolls Band Together

Trolls Band Together

BroZone being BroZone is just one of the delights of watching the Trolls series. But who would've thought that the band would grow apart? That is how Trolls Band Together begins as the lovable band, who always sing in harmony, gets disbanded after an argument reigns supreme. The most affected by this is, of course, baby Branch, and the only one caring about him is the sensitive one, Floyd. But now, years later, baby Branch isn't a baby anymore, and one instance will force the entire band set and plan to have a reunion. Of course, things have changed exponentially, and then there is an evil force to be reckoned with as well. Having had the chance to see the film beforehand, here's what I thought about it-

Impeccable Voice Performances, Candy Floss & All Heart

Impeccable Voice Performances, Candy Floss & All Heart

How can you not fall in love with these lovable trolls even if they have emotions that are as human as they can get - there is no malice. There are differences, but there isn't disdain. There is so much heart, love and purity in the way these films have presented themselves so far. Trolls Band Together is no different in that context, as you see the characters loving each other, fighting for each other, and just being with each other. The storyline here is predictable, but that doesn't take away from the presentation. There is heart and soul in every sequence, even if it involves a bunch of trolls fighting huge odds to save one of them.

One of the highlights of Trolls films has been the usage of color and frames. With this one, that is up several notches owing to several scenes and a change of setting coming into play. There is almost an overwhelming amount of color and pizzaz, which might deter a few but isn't a concern for me. Everything looks candy-flossy and almost too sweet. You might be reminiscent of the days when you would watch the cartoon Oswald, but in a good way, and Trolls make sure that all this candy floss is only here to caress you, soothe you and not sicken you.

However, none of this would have been possible if not for the impeccable voice cast. Each and every actor is fabulous with his/her voice and the traits and tricks given to their respective characters. Justin Timberlake as Branch is all kinds of fabulous, but Anna Kendrick as Poppy, Kenan Thompson as Tiny Diamond, Kid Cudi as Clay and Zooey Deschanel as Bridget are standouts purely by just how distinct and entertaining they make their characters be.

Tad Overwhelming, Nature of the Trolls & Future

Tad Overwhelming, Nature of the Trolls & Future

We are now three films into the Trolls franchise, and while it continues to be innovative with the characterisation, there is a certain amount of overwhelming nature to the overall approach towards watching it. This also has a lot to do with the frequency of multiple films coming in. The first film came in 2016, and in a matter of a total of seven years, we have three films in the franchise. There isn't fatigue, but there is lesser excitement for many as opposed to the way it was back then. It is only to the makers' credit to somehow make the film entertaining and joyous enough not to be bothered by it.

It wouldn't be a Trolls movie if not for some scintillating music, and apart from some anticipated recreations of some iconic songs, the originals are also fun, frolic and melodious. The hugely awaited reunion of NSYNC after 22 years and their single, 'Better Place' was worth it. Even songs, 'Vacay Island' and 'It Takes Two' are great additions.

Trolls Band Together hugely benefits from the minimal runtime of just over ninety minutes and an already likeable voice cast with their inputs, even though it suffers from predictability and wondering about the future. A future where a Trolls movie might or might not happen.

The Verdict

Trolls Band Together benefits from its voice cast, meta references, fun music and admirable attempts to keep you hooked and entertained. It might not be the best one, but it does enough to be loving this world as much as you always did.
