Sanjay Leela Bhansali's highly anticipated show, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazar, has been generating a global buzz. Fans are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to experience this enchanting show on their screens. The show boasts an impressive ensemble cast, featuring Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Sheikh, and Sharmin Segal. Recently, India Forums had the privilege of engaging in a candid conversation with the seasoned actress Manisha Koirala. She shared her insights on her character, the experience of working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and the grandeur that this magnum opus promises to deliver.

When asked, "In the series, there are numerous instances where symbolism plays a significant role. For example, the love story between Alam and Taj Das unfolds amidst a revolution, hinting at impending challenges. Could you elaborate on how these symbolic elements influence character arcs?"

Manish expressed, "When I approach a script, I need to understand the character's inner and outer worlds before stepping onto the set. While the director, Sanjay, is open to discussing and sometimes altering ideas, having a clear grasp of the character is crucial for me. While I appreciate Sanjay's inclination towards spontaneity and innovation, a solid foundation in character understanding helps avoid confusion or haziness in performance."

She added,

But when you're working with him, you have to be very open to anything he will suggest at the last minute. Because he's not going to accept it, he will break you. He will have you change it according to what he's envisioning. So, as much as you prepare, you should be able to drop that preparation and start on something new, something that the director said.

When pooped, "Could you share an experience where you suggested a creative approach to a scene, and Sanjay either embraced it or opted for a different direction?"

Manish gushed, "Absolutely. There was a scene with Sonakshi where Sanjay encouraged our collective input on its execution. We all came together, including the director of photography, to brainstorm and determine the most effective approach. Ultimately, Sanjay values and respects creative contributions from the entire team. However, there are instances when he asserts his vision, drawing from his intimate understanding of the script and characters. As actors, we recognize and respect this as part of the director's prerogative in the art of filmmaking."

Heeramandi is all set to premiere on Netflix from 1st May 2024.
