Lara Dutta calls out showbiz sexism: One-tenth of what the actor gets paid

Amidst the buzz surrounding her latest hit series "Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond" and her upcoming project with Nitesh Tiwari’s "Ramayana," Lara Dutta has brought attention to a longstanding issue in the film industry – the glaring pay disparity between male and female actors.

In a recent interview with Indian Express, the accomplished actress didn't hold back, shedding light on the harsh reality faced by women in showbiz.

 "We work as hard if not harder than most of our male counterparts in the business, but most women still get paid, if they are lucky, one-tenth of what the actor gets paid," Dutta lamented, highlighting the stark inequality prevalent in the industry.

However, amidst the challenges, Lara also reflected on the positive changes she's witnessed over the years. 

Speaking about evolving beauty standards and shifting perceptions towards actresses' career longevity, she remarked, "It's in process and there are a lot of wonderful women that have been a part of molding that change in perception." Lara herself stands as a testament to this change, defying ageist stereotypes and continuing to thrive in her career well into her 40s.

Recalling her journey since her debut in the 2003 film "Andaaz," Lara shared insights into the evolving landscape of Bollywood. "For me, it was just simpler but also more chaotic. The professionalism has come in with a lot of corporates and studios, and it has become more streamlined," she reflected, highlighting the transformation the industry has undergone.

Despite the challenges of the past, Lara remains undeterred, balancing multiple projects with grace and determination. Apart from her role in "Ramayana," she is set to captivate audiences in Akshay Kumar’s "Welcome To The Jungle" and "Suryast," demonstrating her versatility and enduring appeal.
