Karan Johar took to Instagram with a long note on the success of Dhadak 2, pairing it with the film’s poster. The filmmaker, who entered production with Kal Ho Naa Ho in 2003, reflected on how his priorities in cinema have changed across three decades.

Johar admitted that his early years as a producer were driven largely by commercial intent. “My agenda was clear… build the company and make the money so we can fund in-house entertainers,” he wrote. Back then, the box office was the ultimate marker of success.

Now, he said, his focus has widened to telling stories that resonate socially while also engaging audiences. “The need to entertain but also to in our own small way make societal changes or appeal to the collective consciousness,” he explained, acknowledging how his vision has evolved.

On Dhadak 2, Johar expressed pride in first-time director Shazia Iqbal, praising her courage in reimagining a powerful film while making it her own. He extended gratitude to co-producers Zee Studios and Cloud 9 Pictures, along with his Dharma Productions team. The filmmaker also singled out Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, calling their performances layered and complex.

Johar thanked several collaborators including producer Apoorva Mehta, creative producer Somen Mishra, and the marketing and music teams. He also noted the support of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), appreciating its “sensitive and compassionate” approach to the film.

Dhadak 2 tells the story of Neelesh, a college student who falls in love with Vidhi despite caste differences that threaten their relationship. Featuring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri in lead roles, the film released on August 1 after several delays. Originally scheduled for November 2024, the release was pushed multiple times before arriving in theatres this year.

The film has since received widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike. Strong word-of-mouth translated into impressive box office numbers, making it one of the most talked-about releases of 2024.

Produced by Karan Johar, Umesh Kumar Bansal, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Meenu Aroraa, Somen Mishra, and Pragati Deshmukh, the film is backed by Dharma Productions, Zee Studios, and Cloud 9 Pictures.

With Dhadak 2, Johar not only celebrated the film’s reception but also underscored how his filmmaking philosophy has shifted from chasing box office glory to seeking a balance between entertainment and social relevance.

TL;DR

Karan Johar marked the success of Dhadak 2 with a reflective Instagram post, recalling his early box office-driven goals and highlighting how his vision has evolved toward socially relevant storytelling. He praised debut director Shazia Iqbal, along with Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, crediting the entire team for delivering one of 2024’s most acclaimed films.
