Veteran lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar recently shared his views on the widespread silence within the Indian film industry regarding political issues. He suggested that fear of government retaliation is a significant factor that discourages industry professionals from speaking out.

Known for his outspoken opinions, Akhtar reflected on the challenges that come with taking a public stand against the government, acknowledging that many in the industry choose silence over dissent due to potential repercussions. While he himself remains one of the few voices raising concerns, he stated that he does not blame Bollywood stars for avoiding political commentary. “Meryl Streep gave a statement against the US government, but there was no income tax raid on her,” Akhtar remarked, drawing a contrast between Hollywood and Bollywood. He emphasized that the perception of fear and insecurity within the Indian film industry is real, with the threat of government agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the CBI looming large. According to Akhtar, the possibility of tax raids and investigations is enough to silence many in the industry, even if the fear may not be entirely justified.

In a conversation with senior advocate Kapil Sibal on his YouTube channel, Akhtar elaborated on why dissent remains rare within Bollywood. He suggested that the reluctance to speak out isn’t unique to the film industry but rather a broader societal issue. While film professionals live in the public eye, they are still part of society and thus subject to the same pressures that silence dissent in other sectors. Akhtar pointed out that the heightened visibility that comes with being a public figure in entertainment only amplifies the fear of backlash.

The topic of political silence in the film industry has gained attention in recent years, particularly in contrast to the more open criticisms from some global stars. One such example is Meryl Streep, who in 2017, used her Golden Globe acceptance speech to critique then-U.S. President Donald Trump’s mocking of a disabled reporter. During her speech, she expressed her deep disappointment, stating, “There was one performance this year that stunned me. Not because it was good, but because it was cruel.”

Akhtar's comments highlight the complex dynamics of political expression in both the Indian and global entertainment industries, underscoring the risks that come with being openly critical of government actions.
