High five, Low five of the year!!

2013 was the year of some of the biggest shows and some that made a big brouhaha while launching but fizzled out before you could say TRP…

2013 saw various shows which managed to win the hearts of the audiences and maintained  their position in the TRP charts but there were few shows which failed to grab the attention of the audiences. Here is the list of the TV shows which were applauded by the masses and which were not...

The Biggest new entrants

These shows took India by a storm this year as soon as they hit the marquee and have been the most talked about shows throughout.

Comedy Nights with Kapil Sharma

Kapil Sharma may only jokingly ask all the big Bollywood stars if they ever thought they'd be on Comedy Nights with Kapil Sharma one day but looking at the popularity of the show, and Kapil's, he might as well ask them seriously! That Kapil's quick-witted repartees and jokes are howlarious would be an understatement. But his family of Daadi, Bua, wife Sumona Chakrovarthy and other supporting actors are just as popular. There are t-shirts of his catchphrases Babaji ka thullu' and Ittu sa tha' and the Palak, Gutthi, Gutthi, Palak' introduction is just as huge.

24 tele-series

This is the game changer of the small screen! Big stars, high-octane action, taut script, and heavy duty production... Anil Kapoor went the whole hog to make 24 the talk of the town and it did. Thanks to the show, more Bollywood film makers like Anurag Kashyap are looking at making shows for television and names like Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan would be acting on TV too. Looks like it really was the game changer!

Jodha Akbar

This Ekta Kapoor show was in the making for a while and when it did launch, it seems to have found favor with the audience almost instantly. The Rajat Tokas and Paridhi Sharma starrer, which is the love story of a Mughal Emperor Akbar and Rajput princess Jodha, has been in the top of the list since its launch.

Mahabharat

Making a show on the epic will always be an ambitious project. And the original 1988 show by B R Chopra will always make it a bigger challenge and expectations will always be great. Star Plus' Mahabharat honestly does not live up to the expectations, not of Chopra's Mahabharat or any other version. Over the top performances and flawed narration takes a lot away from the show. Even then, this seems to have caught the fancy of the audiences and has catapulted the show to the top 10 slot.

Ek Nanad Ki Khushiyon Ki Chaabi...Meri Bhabhi

So, so far nanad and bhabhi were always at loggerheads. But with this new Star Plus fare, things changed. The divorced daughter of the Shergill family Shraddha (Kanchi Kaul) finds a close friend and support in her sis-in-law Kritika (Esha Kansara), who is a dutiful and loving bahu of the family. People seem to have loved the bond of the two women in the show.

Much ado about nothing

Several shows made a big noise before launching but once on air turned out to be just a whimper...

Chhanchhan

All of Sanaya Irani's popularity and Supriya Pathak's prowess couldn't save Chhanchhan from the pits of flop-dom. The show was supposed to rest only on the shoulders of Sanaya, who was big after her oh-so-popular Star Plus' Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon. But everything left the audiences unimpressed especially the deadpan Farhan Khan who was replaced by Anuj Sachdeva later.

Saraswatichandra

Snazzy sets, a famed Bollywood producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali and great star cast like Jennifer Singh Grover and Gautam Rode. The show, based on the novel by the same name, seemed to have everything going for it. But it wasn't so. In spite of all its opulence, Saraswatichandra did not impress and always grappled with ratings. Even now, the story of Kumud and Saras is doing averagely at best.

Mrs. Pammi Pyarelal

Arrggh! The pains Garuav Gera went through to essay the role of a woman in the Colors show. He managed the looks, the gait and even the voice absolutely fine but the show didn't manage to wow the audience. It had to be pulled off air even before one knew it.

The Bachelorette India - Mere Khayalon Ki Malika

Mallika Sherawat looking for the man of her dreams on the small screen was a big news. The show was well publicized and everyone went crazy about the czarina of boldness being on TV. But the show got over and she chose Vijay Singh and not many cared.

Dil Ki Nazar Se Khoobsurat

Things went ugly rather quickly for the Sony show that was meant to be loosely based on the fairytale The Beauty and the Beast. Protagonists Rohit Khurana and Saumya Seth were both quite popular but their chemistry didn't work for the show. Even a change in the story line and time leap couldn't salvage the show!

Well, we are hoping that the upcoming year brings more exciting and interesting shows for the viewers!
