Helen on marrying Salim Khan: The fact that Salim was a married man did disturb me

Bollywood is filled to the brim with the stories of celebrities hooking-up, breaking-up, and their philandering ways. Over the years we have seen many couples, who set couple goals on daily basis, go their separate ways and break their fans hearts. 

But only few stand up for what they want. Even scriptwriter Salim Khan and Helen had their fair share of difficulties when they decided to get married, despite the scriptwriter being a family man.

Salim Khan has made an immense contribution to the Indian society, when it comes to cinema back in the 70s and the 80s. Being one of the most prolific scriptwriters in Bollywood, the filmmaker was also a handsome hunk in his days. Not only did have a larger-than-life on-screen presence but had an equally colourful lifestyle off-screen. 

The 83-year-old actor had gotten married to Sushila Charak, now known as Salma Khan, after five years of dating. The couple was later blessed with for children – Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Sohail Khan and Alvira Khan. 

But their happily married life hit the rocky roads, when Salma got busy nurturing their kids and Salim was busy with writing scripts. At that same time, Bollywood actress Helen was also gaining momentum in the industry what with her terrific work and dance numbers. 

Nevertheless, work brought Helena and Salim Khan closer.

While many would have thought of this as a passing affair, Salim Khan decided to honour his relationship with Helen and tied-the-knot with her in 1980. The script write was quoted by Pinkvilla saying, “I won't be able to say when exactly I fell in love with her or decided to marry her. After seeing her for quite a long time we decided to honour our relationship. We got married in 1980.”

Even Helen had opened up about the fact that Salim being married had made her feel guilty. But, he was different from the rest of the industry men as he helped her out without exploiting her. 

She was quoted by Pinkvilla saying, “The fact that Salim was a married man did disturb me and I did felt guilty in the beginning. Something about Salim set him apart from rest of the industry men. I respected him tremendously as he tried to help me out without trying to exploit me.”

Salim and Helen, did not have it smooth after their wedding. They faced a lot of hostility, especially Helen, from his family members. What with Salim’s children not willing to accept her into their life and Salma's not-so-cordial equation with her. 

Salim had said, “As kids, they had their hostility. But they reacted the way their mother did. As I told you very honestly, it wasn't as if Salma accepted the relationship happily straightaway and thanked me for it or said, you deserve an Oscar for it. So at that time there was hostility from the children.”

With time Salma as well as the children understood that Helen was a really affectionate person and slowly accepted her into the family. Today, Salim Khan lives with both his wife and all the children like a big, happy family.
