The highly anticipated period drama Emergency is generating immense buzz with the release of its second trailer, setting the stage for a cinematic retelling of one of the most turbulent chapters in Indian political history. Directed by and starring Kangana Ranaut, the film dives into the controversial era of the 1975 Emergency, with Kangana delivering a transformative portrayal of India’s former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. As the release date nears, audiences are eager to witness a story that shaped the nation’s democratic foundations.
The newly released trailer raises the stakes with its depiction of the socio-political chaos that unfolded during the Emergency. Iconic moments, such as Gandhi’s powerful assertion, “Indira is India,” and the mass protests led by Jayaprakash Narayan (played by Anupam Kher), are brought to life with intensity. It also highlights key historical figures, including a young Atal Bihari Vajpayee (Shreyas Talpade), Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw (Milind Soman), and Pupul Jayakar (Mahima Chaudhary). The late Satish Kaushik, in his final performance, takes on the role of Jagjivan Ram, adding emotional depth to this ensemble.
The journey to bring Emergency to the big screen has not been without challenges. Initially slated for a 2024 release, the film faced delays due to objections raised by the Central Board of Film Certification. Controversial scenes were flagged, prompting a lengthy battle between Kangana and the board. The filmmaker-actor, known for her outspoken nature, defended the creative integrity of the project, leading to necessary edits and a revised release schedule.

Kangana expressed her pride in helming such a significant story, stating, “This isn’t just a political drama; it’s a reflection of the resilience of democracy and the enduring relevance of our Constitution.”
Backed by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, Emergency promises to be a thought-provoking tribute to those who stood against oppression, ensuring that the cost of freedom is never forgotten.
