In the 90s, Mamta Kulkarni was a popular actress who eventually left the film industry to pursue a spiritual journey and became the Mahamandaleshwar of Kinnar Akhara. Early in her career, she made headlines for a semi-nude cover shoot for Stardust magazine. Addressing the controversy, she shared that she was just a kid back then and didn’t really understand nudity or sex.
In a recent interview with Rajat Sharma on Aap Ki Adalat, Mamta Kulkarni talked about the photoshoot, saying, “I was then studying in the ninth standard.” She also mentioned that the team from Stardust magazine had shown her a picture of Demi Moore, which she did not consider to be obscene.
The actress remembered making a statement back then, saying she was still a "virgin," which, in her words, people couldn’t "digest." She explained that many thought aspiring actors would do anything to break into Bollywood. While she acknowledged that some might choose that route for money, she emphasized that it wasn’t her case.
Mamta pointed out that she never needed to take such measures because she came from a well-off family. She noted that her father had worked as a transport commissioner for 35 years.
Since I did not know anything about sex, I didn’t understand what nudity was about. If you are not sexually conscious, you won’t relate nudity to obscenity

Mamta also acknowledged that being part of Bollywood often required conforming to certain industry practices. She mentioned that there were many instances where they would receive the songs right before filming, and by the time she understood the lyrics, she had already completed the shoot for the sequence.
Former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni was expelled from the Kinnar Akhara on Friday, just a few days after her induction and appointment as Mahamandaleshwar. This decision was made in response to increasing objections from members of the religious group. In a surprising turn of events, Ajay Das, the founder of Kinnar Akhara, also dismissed Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Laxmi Narayan Tripathi from the organization, citing Tripathi's involvement in bringing Kulkarni into the community as the reason for the dismissal.
