Amar Singh Chamkila's son raises concerns over portrayal of heritage

Imtiaz Ali's latest venture, "Amar Singh Chamkila," has stirred a whirlwind of excitement with its portrayal of the iconic musician, earning accolades from audiences and fans alike. However, amidst the fervor, a voice of dissent emerges as Chamkila's son, Jaiman Chamkila, expresses disappointment with a particular scene in the film.

Released on Netflix on April 12, 2024, the biopic has captivated viewers with the stellar performances of Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, commended for their authenticity by director Imtiaz Ali. Yet, Jaiman Chamkila voiced discontent with the portrayal of his maternal grandparents in one scene.

In a candid conversation with Aaj Tak, Jaiman highlighted his unease with a climactic scene depicting his parents' demise, wherein Amarjot Kaur's parents are portrayed rushing to seize their belongings.   

Jaiman said in Hindi, “Aisa toh nahi tha jaise unhone dikhaaya hai. Agar aisi koi baat hoti toh mujhe pata hi hota, mujhe toh paala hi un logon ne hai. Mere jitne bhi hak hain, mujhe un logon ne hi dilaaye hain. Toh yeh thoda mujhe laga ki unhone galat dikhaaya hai. (It wasn't like what they had shown. If there was something like that, I would have known. They have raised me. All the rights that I have, they have given me. So, I feel this was wrongly shown in the film)."

Despite this critique, the Chamkila family overall expressed satisfaction with the biopic's portrayal, with Jaiman acknowledging Diljit Dosanjh's commendable portrayal of his father.

Meanwhile, amidst the film's success, Amar Singh Chamkila's musical legacy continues, with the artist engrossed in a bustling musical tour and eagerly anticipating the release of an upcoming Punjabi-language film.
