Bollywood star Alia Bhatt has found herself in the middle of an unexpected controversy after a video she shot for the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) went viral for all the wrong reasons.

Last week, the Chandigarh division of NCB shared a short awareness clip featuring Alia, where she urged viewers to “say yes to life and no to drugs” while also encouraging people to take an online pledge for a drug-free India. The initiative seemed fairly harmless on paper, but the response online was anything but supportive.

Within hours of the post, trolls pounced on Alia, calling her an “ironic” choice for the campaign. Several users dragged Bollywood’s past run-ins with drug allegations into the conversation, while others specifically name-dropped her husband, Ranbir Kapoor. Sarcastic comments like “look who’s talking” and “Bollywood spreading drug awareness” flooded the internet. A few also mocked the very concept of drug pledges, joking that no one would ever resist a substance by recalling a promise made to a celebrity.

Things escalated so quickly that the NCB Chandigarh handle had to switch off the comments section on Alia’s video after just six responses. Interestingly, comments remain open on all their other posts, making it clear this was a one-off move to shield the actor from the relentless trolling. However, critics found another route to express themselves by using the quote-tweet option, where the sarcasm only got sharper.

Despite the backlash, Alia remains one of the most bankable stars in Bollywood right now. Now she has two massive projects lined up: Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love and War alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal, and YRF’s ambitious action film Alpha, which will be hitting the theatres in December, marking a Christmas release.

While the NCB campaign may not have landed as planned, Alia’s career graph is still soaring, and her upcoming films are expected to dominate headlines once again.
