Renowned for his roles in popular television series such as Kumkum, CID, Beyadh, and other well-received shows, Imran Khan has made a triumphant return to television through Zee TV's beloved series 'Kumkum Bhagya.' In an exclusive conversation with India Forums, the actor, set to portray Abrar Qazi's father in the show, shared insights into his television comeback, his character, and various aspects of the show.

Assuming this marks your return to television, what drew you to choose 'Kumkum Bhagya' for your comeback?

I often refer to television as my steadfast companion. It's like the proverbial friend in need who is indeed a friend. Television is where I feel most at home, and it's been an integral part of my journey. Despite commencing my career in movies during the 1990s, my television debut happened in 1993, becoming part of the inaugural show on Zee TV. Since then, television has remained a loyal ally, and I've never severed ties with it. Before this opportunity, I found myself navigating through events, promoting my film, and engaging with individuals in the OTT space. In an attempt to breathe new life into my film, I re-edited it into six episodes, an ongoing process. During this phase, I was primarily sustaining myself through event appearances.

A few months ago, while rushing to catch a flight to Kolkata for an event, a serendipitous encounter unfolded at the airport lounge. Upon spotting the influential figure in television, Ekta Kapoor, something stirred within me, prompting me to take an unusual step. Approaching her, I introduced myself, sharing my three-decade-long journey in the television industry and expressing my regret at not having collaborated with Balaji earlier. Kapoor, with a smile, uttered a succinct yet impactful line, assuring me that a call would be forthcoming. True to her words, I find myself now on the prestigious sets of 'Kumkum Bhagya,' portraying the role of Abrar's father. Having immersed myself in the shooting process for the past week, I'm thoroughly enjoying the experience, made even better by the show's set being conveniently close to my place of residence.

Provide us with a glimpse into the character you portray on the show.

I am portraying the role of a charming and affluent father, and I say this with a light-hearted chuckle. It's a character that holds its own charm, distinct from the historical roles, negative characters, and slapstick comedies that I have previously explored in both television and film. The allure of this character played a pivotal role in reigniting my passion for television, and I find immense joy in bringing this character to life.

In the realm of entertainment, I've had the privilege of associating with esteemed colleagues, including the likes of Mr. Sunny Deol and Danny Dengonzpa. Engaging in discussions with them has shed light on the challenges they face in the film industry and their frustrations with certain roles. Witnessing their experiences has reinforced my belief that personal satisfaction is something one must actively pursue and cultivate.

For me, the satisfaction comes from simple acts—facing the camera, absorbing the guidance of my director, conversing with my co-actors, and merely being in the presence of a television set. These moments are akin to the act of breathing, serving as indispensable elements that fuel my passion for the craft.

Given your portrayal as Abrar's father, could you share more about your relationship with him?

In the role of Abrar Qazi's father, I find a genuine fondness for this young and talented actor. Abrar hails from Kashmir, a place I hold close to my heart, having even written a script centered around the region. Our shared connection with Kashmir, coupled with my knowledge of Abrar's residence, has fostered a strong sense of affection and camaraderie between us.
