Part 2

One year later

Raavi watched as he washed his face near the well. She was sitting on his cot and completing her assignments. Her maasi had created a huge ruckus when she came to know about Raavi coming to the Pandya Niwaas... again, but Raavi had shrugged at her words and skipped here without a care. For her it was quite simple, wherever her bhoothnath stayed she stayed too.

Krish groaned from his cot and when he saw her, shook his head. If Raavi had been exasperating in her love for Dev, she was more than that in her love for Shiva. Since the past year, there wasn't a day when she didn't come to their house. She finished all her vrats many months ago. The last two with full cooperation from Shiva. And now she had taken over all his works. She came in the morning and left at night, with Shiva, who dropped her to her home himself. She attended college from their house early in the morning, returned to their house in the evening and did many chores of their house with Dhara. But that was all what Raavi did. Krish also knew what all Shiva did. He just didn't want to tell because that should be Shiva's story to tell.

"Maa? Bhabhi?" Krish called out as he left his cot. Dev was already up and sitting on the steps to the courtyard. Everyone turned towards Krish, who settled beside Dev.

"Bol." Suman replied from her swing.

"Aapko nahin lagta Raavi kuch zyada hi yahan rehne lagi hai?" Krish enquired. Shiva finished washing his face and frowned at Krish, as he accepted the towel Raavi handed him silently.

"So to hai." Suman replied. "Pehle to thodi der ke liye apne ghar mein reh bhi leti thi jab Dev ka naam jaapti thi. Ab to apna ghar jaise chod hi diya hai. Yahin par rehti hai."

"To accha hai na Ma? Aasaani hogi ise apna ghar parivaar peeche chodne mein." Dhara joked and laughed as she came to the aangan with vegetables. Suman called her to herself and took the vegetables from her as she began to cut them.

"Kyun Raavi? Ched du teri shaadi ki baat teri kaagdi maasi ke saath?" Suman asked her. Suman hated her maasi but she had come to like Raavi a lot. Raavi fell silent. She blushed but also felt her heart constrict. Her Bhoothnath hadn't even accepted her yet. Yes he cooperated with her in the last two vrats. Yes he had toned down his hatred. So even though they still fought there was no real heat. Yes he dropped her home every night. Yes he accepted all her advances. But he hadn't spoken about them both with her ever and she hadn't spoken with him either. So how could she say anything when he remained silent on this matter? His silence had been bugging her a lot. Why didn't he say something? But Shiva remained adamantly silent.

Raavi remembered the past year vividly. There was no doubt in her heart whatsoever regarding how much she loved him. With Dev it was a fantasy. She had loved him like a child loving a shiny, new and perfect toy. But she knew it was more of a stubbornness. She would have soon gotten bored of him because he was not made for her. He was a great guy but not for her and he was flawed like any human being. And his flaws pushed Raavi away. But Shiva? She loved him with all his imperfections because his flaws were where her strengths fit perfectly. Her jagged pieces filled his' like a glove. They were like a jigsaw and she just adored it.

He was watching her intently. She looked away. He smiled softly and walked away leaving all the members of his family wondering. They were puzzled about his silence too. Suman sighed as she shook her head.

"Har baat par to chillata hai gala phaad kar par is baat par pata nahin kyun itna shaant hai?" Suman wondered.

"Lagta hai sharmata hai." Dev replied with a chuckle. He was happy Raavi didn't follow him anymore. He felt at peace. He hadn't actually paid attention to this development till two months after Raavi's vrat and confession. Dev remembered that day clearly.

He was is the shop with Shiva. Kaka had gone out on some errands. Shiva was in the store room when Raavi bounced in.

"Shivaaaa..." She called out happily. Dev looked up and smiled.

"Arre Raavi! Tum? Bahut dinon se nahin dikhi?" Dev asked her cordially. Raavi smiled back at him. She didn't seek him out nowadays. "Theek ho? Padhai waghaira kaise chal rahi hai? Kuch khareedne aayi thi?" He asked.

"Nahin nahin Dev kuch nahin chahiye! Aur main aur meri padhayi donon theek hain." She replied with a chuckle. She was fasting today. Shiva knew already because she had gone early in the morning to Pandya Niwaas today. He had watched her with reluctance. She had stubbornly watched him as she completed each ritual. He sighed. Dev didn't know because she didn't called out to anyone anymore when she went to begin to her vrat.

"Accha! To fir theek hai." Dev said and that was that. There was nothing much to add. They were friends but they didn't have much to talk or share. She never noticed how he didn't have much to speak with her. He was always at loss of words with her.

"Shiva kahan hai?" She asked. Dev pointed towards the store room as he turned towards a customer who just walked in. She hastily walked away.

Shiva was taking an account of the goods that had arrived in the morning. She smiled as she watched him note down something in the register and tiptoed towards him.

"Rehne de Gadedhi! Tere bas ki baat nahin hai shanti se chalna. Jab tu aati hai na? To mujhe ek meel door se tere qadmon ki chaap sunayi dete hain. Dinosaur kahin ki!" Shiva said without looking up. Raavi pouted.

"Haan Haan bhoothnath! Shayad tere chele bhooth tujhe pehle hi inform kar dete hain."

"Chele bhooth kahan? Teri ye ek liter perfume bottle hai na jo tu khud par undel kar aati hai? Haan wohi inform karti hai mujhe." He replied. She huffed angrily and took a seat opposite to him. He watched her once and then something in his eyes changed but before she could read them he looked towards the register again. His hands had fisted slightly. "Kya chahiye tujhe?" He asked after a ten minute of silence. Raavi just kept staring at him and he had had enough.

"Tu..." Raavi told him simply and his hand faltered. She giggled. He looked up in horror.

"Chal bhaag yahan se! Subeh subeh ghar aa jati hai kya woh kaafi nahin hai jo chutti ke din store chali aati hai?" He asked crossly. She shook her head.

"Tere saath jo samay beetta hain woh kabhi kaafi nahin hota." She simply answered. He blinked in response then shook his head.

"Main bhi dekhta hoon ki kab tak tu is tarah mere peeche lagi rehti hai. Dev ka peecha chod diya hai to mera bhi chod degi." He muttered in part hope and part disappointment.

"Dev bachpana tha. Utar gaya. Tu zindagi hai. Tu utra to main chal basungi." She told him with a laugh. He growled at her.

"Bekaar ki baaten mat bana aur chalti ban." He huffed.

"Accha chalti hoon." Raavi told him softly and kissed his cheek leaving him stunned and Dev who had just come in to call Shiva was left in embarrassment and shock too. She turned and spied Dev at the doorway and blushed as she looked away. She hadn't meant for anyone to see. Shiva watched her crimson cheeks and chuckled at her. She huffed at him and walked away with her head held high, leaving Dev watching her back as she went out of the shop.

Dev still remembered how proud she looked of herself. He chuckled now though, as she watched his brother leave, forlornly. He smiled fondly.

Dhara too watched Shiva walk away and then turned to see Raavi become too upset. She went to her and sat with her arm around Raavi's shoulder.

"Aaj nahin to kal woh maan hi jayega Raavi." Dhara told her softly. Raavi nodded. She could wait an eternity for him. Dhara watched her fiddle with her hands and remembered the day when Raavi had walked in after attending her classes some months ago.

Dhara was taking Shiva's dirty clothes for washing. His clothes always gave her the hardest time. They were a symbol of how much work he did. How much he toiled each day. When she washed them she had to struggle just as much he did. Dhara didn't mind. She took him as her child and which mother minded when she worked for her child selflessly? All the other clothes could be washed by a machine but his clothes needed to be hand washed. She came to the aangan to wash them.

"Dhara diiii..." Raavi walked in happily. She had just returned from the college.

"Raavi? Aaja! Khana kha le..." Dhara invited her in. Raavi smiled as she went to freshen up and then walked towards the kitchen. When she returned she had had her lunch. She then settled on Shiva's cot and watched Dhara.

"Shiva ke kapde?" Raavi muttered and the very next second she called out. "Di?" Dhara looked up. "Kya main dho doon?" Dhara watched her in amusement and then in conflict. Raavi was a soft girl and she didn't want her to be burdened with these menial tasks. She also didn't want Raavi to think less of her Shiva. Raavi read her eyes and smiled. "Please di?"

"Pan bacche ye kaam main karti aayi hoon na? To ab main hi karna chahti hoon." Dhara made an excuse. Raavi smiled.

"Par ab main karna chahti hoon Di. Maine use poore mann se apnaya hai to main kyun na uske poore kaam bhi apnaun? Aaj se Shiva ka har kaam main krungi!" Raavi declared and took Dhara's place after moving her forcefully despite Dhara's protests and began to wash his clothes. Dhara watched in part amusement and part love. This girl, even though she looked so soft and gentle, had a heart of gold and an iron will, just what her Shiva needed in his life. She smiled.

And when Shiva walked in that day, to see her wash his clothes, he growled.

"Tu ye kyun kar rahi hai?" He asked. "Bhabhi?Aap isse ye kyun kara rahi ho?" He asked. She smiled at him too.

"Usne zabardasti se liya hai ye kaam."

"Aur aaindah se bhi main hi karungi because I love you Shiva." She singsonged. He grumbled and stomped away as she giggled happily with Dhara.

Suman watched her son leave and frowned. How could he stomp on this gentle child's heart so heartlessly? She would have to speak to him after the makar sankranti regarding Raavi. He couldn't just stay silent anymore. She made a vow to talk to him openly and then watched as Dhara and Raavi chattered, diverting her mind from her third son. She smiled slightly as she watched Raavi laughed reminiscing an incident of some time ago.

Suman was watching a hindi serial on the TV. Raavi was sitting beside her with a plate of dhokla as she munched on them. Krish was making faces at the TV though both Suman and Raavi knew that he was hooked to the story by now. Each time he grumbled Suman and Raavi exchanged glances and shook their heads.

'Men...' Their eyes declared.

They didn't understand what it was about Indian serials that men perceived lowered their masculinity if they watched the serials. They shrugged in tandem and watched the high drama on the TV with blaring music and tears that could drown even the Thar desert. It was a very crucial and intense scene, amidst which Shiva walked in.

He bent down to greet his mother and then watched Krish and guffawed at his enthralled expression. He also spied a tear or two on his face.

"Aye Somnath ke paani ki tanki! Kya auraton ki tarah serial dekh kr emotional ho raha hai? Koi aur kaam nahin hai tujhe?" He enquired.

"Meri aankh mein kuch chala gaya hai. Aur main to apne phone par khel raha tha." Krish made an excuse. Shiva scoffed and walked away to freshen up near the well. Raavi stood up and rushed behind him. Suman watched her leave silently and then forgot her serial as she observed the two of them.

Dhara had headache and she had taken the medication and slept already. Raavi rushed inside the kitchen after handing Shiva's towel to him. She fixed his plate and sat down near him as he began to eat. There was no ounce of reluctance in Raavi's actions. Suman smiled at them as they quibbled like kids. Raavi had left everything the moment he had walked in. Suman knew then that Raavi would be perfect for her Shiva because she loved him a lot.

"Aye Gadedhi! Aise kya dekh rahi hai?" Shiva enquired.

"Tere sar ka taaj kahan hai ye soch rahi hoon." Raavi replied.

"Taj? Pagal ho gayi hai? Paglait kahinki. Aaj subeh aate hue apne bheje ko us Maami ke paas rakh kar aayi hai? Bakwas kiye ja rahi hai."

"Taj to hona chahiye. Tu bhoothnath jo thehra." She giggled at her own joke. He grumbled something about her brain being in her knees. "Chup chaap khana kha!" Raavi told him as she stared some more. He smell of masalas. "Phir thodi der baad naha le! Mujhe drop bhi karna hai!"

"Aye chipkali! Main nahin naha raha. Tujhe aana hai to aise hi aa warna padi reh yahan."

"Theek hai. To main teri khaat pe so jaungi. Tu apna bandobast kar le."  She replied nonchalantly. His eyes darkened at her reply and she tensed. It was rare when he got that look in his eyes. And she cherished it even when it scared her to bits. He was very unpredictable when he looked like this.

Raavi decided not to tempt fate anymore. She didn’t want to keep poking the beast right now. She laughed artificially and nodded at Shiva as he stared at her while chewing slowly and then made her way back to Suman who turned towards the TV once more.

Suman smiled as Raavi got rather involved in the serial but still kept turning her head to see Shiva. She had found the perfect girl for her son.

“Aye Bhagodi ki beti!” Suman called out from the swing after she finished chopping the vegetables. Dhara turned towards her mother in law.

“Ji Ma?” She asked.

“Upar kamre bandhwana shuru kar de. Ye bhai bade ho rahe hain. Inki shadiyon se pehle kamre bandh jaane chahiye!” Suman ordered.

“Jaise aap kahen Maa.” Dhara replied. She had to speak to Gaumbhi about this. What Suman said was right. They didn’t have many rooms and if there was a wedding soon, then there would be problems for couples. She turned towards Raavi and patted her cheeks when she spied a blush.

Some months later

It was makar sankranti and the whole Pandya family was at the ghaat. Everywhere they turned people were having fun. Some were flying kites, some were shopping and some were excited for the rides.

The Pandya Family was flying kites themselves. Gautam and Dhara were in a team and Shiva and Krish in the other, while Dev was watching from beside his mother. He was holding his own kite, ready to fly it. Suman was shouting encouragement to her children and also scolding them on a bad maneuver. Dhara was flying the kite while Gautam was handling the wheel. And Shiva was flying the kite on behalf of his team.

“Arre Bhagodi ki beti?” Suman called out. Dhara though was too involved in the kite and didn’t reply. Suman shook her head. “Aye! Bhagodi ki beti!” Dhara was startled.

“Ji Maa!” She inquired handing the manjha to Gautam and holding the wheel so she could speak with Suman.

“Raavi kahin dikh nahin rahi. Tyohar ho aur woh chidiya na aaye aisa to nahin ho sakta. Aur aisa bhi nahin ho sakta ki woh Shiva ke peeche peeche tyohar par ghar bhi na aaye. To hain kahan wo?” Suman asked. Dhara frowned. She had wondered about that too. She had even waited for Raavi but Raavi didn’t come. Dhara still remembered the last year’s sankranti, after Raavi’s declaration.

“Dhara diiii!” She heard Raavi chirp excitedly as she entered the house at the crack of dawn. Three simultaneous groans could be heard from the cots. She giggled and shook her head. “Main aa gayi!”

“Jin pairon se phudak kar aayi hai na? Unhi pairon se wapas bhi chali ja!” Shiva growled from within his blanket.

“Arre aise kaise? Aaj tyohar hai aur mujhe yeh tyohar mere hone wale pati ke saath celebrate karna hai!” Raavi declared.

“Haan to tu Shiva ko apne saath le ja Raavi! Iski wajah se hum kyun sahe bhala? Humen sone de!” Krish called out.

“Aye Gadedhe! Chup kar!” Shiva scolded him. “Aur tu! Maami ki behen ki beti! Tu wapas ja aur tab tak mat aana jab tak Suraj aasmaan par chadh na jaye!”

“Aisa nahin kar sakti! Chalo chalo utho! Nahalo. Humen fir saath mein ghaat par bhi jana hai. Patang udana hai. Aur is baar main aur tu saath patang udayenge. Jhoole pe bhi baithenge. Shopping bhi karenge! Tu is baar meri team mein hoga Shiva! Pehle hi bol deti hoon.” Raavi told him as she sat on the cot.

“Raavi abhi din bhi nahin chadha! Kyun chilla rahi ho?” Dev mumbled as he tried to block the voice. Shiva placed the pillow on his head. Raavi pouted.

“Tujh jaisi chipkali ke saath main patang nahin udaunga.” Shiva told her.

“Zindagi bhar mere saath hi udana hai patang. Tu aadat daal le!” Raavi said angrily. Shiva groaned. “Aise kya disappointed ho raha hai? Somnath ki sabse khoobsurat ladki ke saath patang udane mein tujhe garv mehsoos hona chahiye!” Raavi said haughtily.

“Haan haan Somnath ki chipkaliyon ki beauty queen hai tu. Bahut garv mehsoos ho raha hai.” Shiva said sleepily. Krish guffawed. Raavi huffed. But before she could say a word, Shiva’s hand emerged from the blanket and hit Krish who yelped.

“Mujhe kyun maara?” Krish shouted.

“Hans mat Gadedhe!” Shiva said while Raavi smiled softly. She could sense some sweet little changes in her Bhoothnath. She looked down shyly as he defended her. And while Krish and Shiva fought, she walked towards the kitchen to her Dhara di wondering how just a sentence from him could improve her mood.

“Arre Suman ben? Kaisi hain aap!?” Some ladies came to meet and greet. Dhara smiled as Suman began to converse with them.

“Waise Suman ben hume ek baat ki bhanak tak nahin lgne di! Itni badi baat tay ho gayi aur aapne bataya bhi nahin!” One lady complained. Suman frowned.

“Kya keh rahi ho Sharmila?” She asked.

“Bas bas Suman Ben. Ab baniye mat. Saare Somnath ko pata chal gaya hai.” Sharmila laughed with the other ladies. Suman looked at her children. Did they all do some new kaand? They shrugged at her.

“Khul kar batao ki kis baare mein baat kar rahi ho!”

“Arre aapne is Shiva ka rishta jo tay kar diya hai!” Sharmila answered.

“KYA?” All of them shouted. Shiva was shocked. He handed the maanjha to Krish as he turned to hear more.

“Kisse?” Suman inquired. She was still in shock.

“Apni Raavi se!” Sharmila answered in an obvious tone. “Waise hum sub to dang reh gaye. Raavi to Dev ki maala japti thi na? To achanak Shiva se uska rishta kaise tay hua?” Sharmila was asking.

“Yeh kisne kaha aapse?” Dhara asked trying to control her surprise.

“Ab kisike kehne ki kya zaroorat hai Dhara?” Another woman asked with a laugh. “Rishta tay hone ki khabar logon tak pahunchane ka ye tareeqa issi parivar ne to shuru kiya tha. Ab to ye ek pratha ban gayi hai na. Gautam ne bhi to barson pehle isi tarah se apne aur Anita ke rishte ke baare mein bataya tha sab ko!”

Gautam and Dhara felt a deep sense of foreboding as they exchanged glances.

“Patange se bhai!” Sharmila added and the ladies laughed at the ingenuity of the way. Suman looked puzzled. “Woh dekho…” She pointed towards the sky.

In the blue expanse of sky, amidst hundreds of other flags was a very beautiful, pale pink and yellow colored, relatively larger kite. It had tassels on the edges and giant letters in between that declared…

Shiva sang Raavi,

Shaadi mein zaroor aana.

The Pandya family felt their jaws drop. They all exchanged another glance as Krish let out a peal of laughter. Dev began to chuckle while Shiva remained impassive and Gautam frowned.

The ladies congratulated them again and went ahead. Suman watched all her kids and sighed. Another drama.

“Who can do this? Maami?” Dev asked.

“Nahin woh Kaagdi nahin kar sakti.” Suman shook her head.

“Pan kyun Maa?” Krish asked. “Aisi harkaten unhi ka kaam hoti hain hamesha.”

“Haan pan iss baar woh yeh nahin kar sakti. Woh khud nahin chahegi ki Shiva aur Raavi ka rishta ho. Woh nahin chahegi ki poore Somnath mein Raavi ka naam Shiva ke saath jud jaaye. Pehel jaaye aag ki tarah. Woh iss rishte ke liye raazi nahin hai. Aur ye harkat to iss rishte ko judne mein madad karegi jo ki Prafulla kbhi nahin chahegi.” Suman replied.

“Main pata karta hoon.” Shiva said calmly and walked away while Dhara faced the sky.

“Gaumbhi Maanjha mujhe do.” Dhara said.

“Kyun kya karne wali hai tu?” Gaumbhi frowned as he held the charkha.

“Mere bacchon ke naam ki patang hai!” Dhara said with a sweet smile reminiscing about long ago. “Kisi ko kaatne nahin dungi!” Dhara declared as she began to fly her kite expertly. “Dhil aap!” She shouted with a smile as she began to wind the other kites on themselves and then finally cut their thread. And then with a wide smile shouted. “Kai po che!!” Her family laughed along with her.

~

In the same ghaat some distance away, on a high enough parapet was Raavi, standing with Preeti, her best friend.

“Preeti Dhil Aap! Dhil aap!” Raavi shouted as she controlled her kite happily. Her eyes were wide and filled with twinkling laughter, her lips were parted in a wide smile and her hair was fierce as it flew in the wind along with her kite.

She was wearing chikankaari anarkali with red bandhani dupatta with glasswork. Her hand was full of metallic silver bangles and they were making tinkling sound as she fiercely flew her kite shouting instructions. She didn’t even realize that her kite had become the centre of attraction for everyone. Or maybe she knew but didn’t care. After all this was all her idea.

Shiva Sang Raavi,

Shaadi mein zaroor aana.

She had decided that enough was enough. She had waited a long while for Shiva to say something or at least kidnap her from her Maasima’s house and marry her. She had waited for Maasima to take her proposal to the Pandyas. But nothing was happening on both the ends. So she had decided to push the waters or wind so as to say. She had had enough of depending on someone else now. She would take her own decisions and see them succeed. So she made this beautiful invitation cum declaration kite and flew it. Now everyone will have to agree. Everything will fall in line. Her Maasima would fear the words of society and marry her to Shiva. And Shiva would be forced to react. Good or bad anything will do but she hoped he did at least something that told her about what he actually thought of the whole issue. So one arrow and many aims was the correct way of saying this. But this had to be done in secret or Maasima and Shiva would both kill her. She chuckled.

Shiva walked for quite a distance, away from his family, as he followed the kite that had become the topic of discussion on this day. He didn’t like the attention he received through the kite. When he reached the higher parapet from which the string of the kite originated, he stilled. Because standing on the parapet he finally saw who it was…

Raavi…

Oh…

So maami ki behen ki beti had taken a page or two from her maasima’s book. He shook his head.

Preeti was chuckling as Raavi cut another thread and was ready to loosen the charkha for her when she spied some movement from beside her. She turned in shock and then raised her hand to inform Raavi. Shiva shook his head at her. She stilled. He smiled and extended a hand, she silently handed over the charkha in response to his silent request and with a last helpless glance at Raavi she rushed away.

“Dekha Preeti! Dekh maine woh patang bhi neeche gira di. Chal Dhil aap!”

But Raavi’s luck seemed to be running out. She was facing difficulties now. And just as she was about to lose, she saw someone extend their hand and grab the maanjha. She could recognize this hand in the millions.

“Shiva?” She whispered and turned a little in part hope and part fear. He stood just behind her. He held her waist with the hand holding the charkha and placed the charkha in her hands. She speechlessly watched him as he began to fly the kite, concentrating hard, while she grabbed the charkha.

“Dhil aap…” He whispered to her in his deep voice and she was mesmerized. He had never whispered this softly to her before. But then she registered what he said and swiftly took on her new role.

Shiva began to fly the kite expertly and battled the other kites in sky while she watched him do so happily. He was finally in her team. She laughed as he cut yet another string silently.

A long time later when their kite was almost the only one flying, he turned towards her. She watched him with a tearful smile.

“Tu aa gaya Shiva?”

“Nahin Gadedhi! Main abhi bhi ghar pe hoon.” He answered sarcastically. Raavi huffed.

“Last year tu mujhse door bhag raha tha yeh keh kar ki tu kabhi mere saath patang nahin udayega. Tune kaha ki tu kabhi meri team mein nahin hoga.” She told him, hurt. He sighed.

“Woh last year tha. Yeh is saal ki nayi shuruat hai.” He told her seriously. She smiled as she hugged him.

“I am sorry maine tujhse pooche baghair ye kiya. Teri chuppi mujhe dehla rahi thi. Maine socha ki ab main chup rahi to tujhe kho dungi.” She told him as she burrowed in his chest.

“Meri aankhon mein kya tujhe meri haan nahin dikhi? Chipkali?” He questioned. She sniffled. He laughed.

“Ab achanak kyun aa gaya?”

“Pehle to sirf dekhne aaya tha ki kon tha. Fir tujhe dekha to mujhse raha nahi gaya aur main Preeti ko bhaga kar yahan khda ho gaya.” He told her as he stared at their kite on the sky, safe and a clear winner. “Fir maine dekha ki Maanjha tere haath se choot raha hai… To maine thaam liya.”

Shiva kissed her head as she shyly smiled while still hiding her face. Shiva was still flying their kite, declaring his relationship with his Gadedhi in front of the whole world.

Gaumbhi had told him once- ‘Shiva! Zindagi ho ya patang, dor hamesha tere haath mein honi chahiye! Chootni nahin chahiye!’ And when Raavi was going to let the maanjha go, he decided he needed to hold on to his patang and zindagi both. He sighed, at peace.
