Part 9

Atharv was lying on his bed switching channels and not really watching anything.

His mind was filled with the good days of him and Sampada. How many dreams they had for their life. They had wanted to travel the world together.

She was gone now and he was here. They hadn't gotten to do anything that they had wanted to.

His tears streamed down thinking how much she had undergone. Yet she hadn't left him alone, she'd left a piece of herself behind for him, their baby, giving him a reason to continue living even in the current state he was in.

That day when his brother had brought Kalyani, her dad and his baby into this house was still fresh in his mind.

Since Malhar had given the news, Anupriya was on cloud nine, making quick arrangements.

Sarthak hugged his son. "Hamare zindagi me pure ek saal baad khushi ka jhalak aa Raha hai beta…"

All their faces radiated the happiness which had been missing since an year.

Atharv was in his bed waiting impatiently when he heard his mother.

"Wahin ruko ek minute…aarti utar deti hun…hamara bacha pehli baar ghar me aa raha hai.."

Malhar had come into his room. "Atharv, mere bhai…!!", Malhar smoothed his brother's forehead.

"Tera beta aaya hai…ab tujhe apne aap ko jitni jaldi ho sake teekh karna hai.. Apne bache keliye…tumhe apne saare dard se ladna hai aur teekh hona hai…uske saat khoobsurat pal bitaane hai…"

When Anupriya brought his son to him, Atharv's eyes were full of unspoken emotions and tears rolled down his cheeks.

A chubby little baby he was, smiling toothlessly. His baby. His son.

Malhar introduced Atul and Kalyani.

"Na..Naam…?", Atharv asked.

"Dhruv..!!", Kalyani said.

Hearing Kalyani's voice, Dhruv jumped back into her arms.

Anupriya was a bit upset but Sarthak had held her back.

"Thoda time do Anupriya…abhi abhi toh aaya hai…", he said gently.

Kalyani had laid Dhruv on his stomach upon Atharv's chest, "Dekh mela bacha….Tere Papa hain…!!"

She had given him a formal smile, "Aapka aur Sampu ka beta….par mera bhi bacha hai…Mai use…"

"Kalyani…!!", Atul had stopped his daughter from talking further.

"Bolne dijiye…!!", Sarthak had said.

"Mai use yahan chodke nahi jaungi…ajnabiyon ke beech…"

"Hum ajnabee nahi hai…!! Uska parivaar hai…!!", Anupriya had retorted.

"Maaf kijiye Anupriya ji, Meri beti ka Matlab tha ki abhi keliye aap sab Dhruv keliye naye log hain…toh bacha ghabra jayega na…par thode din me sabse gulmil jayega…", Atul played the peacemaker.

Sarthak nodded his head, "Bilkul sahi keh rahe hain aap Atul ji…bache ko wakt dena chahiye…mere khayal se hum sabko bhi pehle ek dusre ko ache se jaan lena chahiye…"

"Ji bilkul Sarthak ji…"

"Toh chaliye…hum teenon bade baitkar baat karte hain…bachon ko yahan chod dete hain…Atharv toh ut nahi sakta…"

The elders moved out to the living room.

"Bhai…!!" Atharv tried to raise his hand. He wanted to touch his baby.

Malhar lifted the baby into his arms from Atharv's chest and sat down on a chair beside him, holding the baby comfortably for Atharv's fingers to feel the child's soft skin.

The elders had discussed and decided that Kalyani would stay back with the baby here at Pune.

Kalyani was not happy, "Papa aapne kyun agree kiya…? mujhe nahi rukna yahan…aur aap..? Aap wahan akele rahenge ghar me..? Aur meri job…? kitne din chutti le sakti hun mai…ye sab workout nahi hoga papa…Dhruv hamare saat hi rahega.. inhe jab use dekhna ho toh aa sakte hain…", she had argued.

Anupriya was bubbling with anger but for once she had to listen to her husband and maintained silence.

"Hum sabka teekh hai Kalyani beta…", Sarthak said. "Lekin Atharv…!! woh itne dur travel nahi kar sakta apne bache ko dekhne…"

"Ple…ase Kal..yani….", Atharv said, his throat choking at the thought of not being able to see his son.

Kalyani stayed back with Dhruv and Atul went back to Aurangabad.

Atharv felt like some new energy was flowing into him. His son's innocent face and cute smiles gave him the eagerness to pursue his therapies. His speaking difficulty was slowly improving more and he was making some progress in moving his arms up and down.

Often Kalyani brought in the baby and sat beside his bedside. They soon became good friends.

Two months later, it was time for Kalyani to go back to Aurangabad. Dhruv was now used to all the members of the house.

When she had come to say bye, she hugged Dhruv to her chest and crying, "Mujhe bhul toh nahi jayega na…? Mai tumhe bohot miss karungi…"

Atharv touched her hand giving it a gentle squeeze, "Kalyani…tum jab chahe use apne saat ghar le ja sakti ho, tum aur Papa uske saat wakt bita sakte ho…haan agar tum yahan aayi toh Mai bhi bohot Khush ho jaunga… Kam se Kam mujhe latest trends toh pata chalenge…Bhai se toh koi umeed Nahi hai…use toh sirf…"

"Bas Atharv…!! Kalyani ji ko mere baare me extra information nahi chahiye…", Malhar had come in at that moment.

"Kalyani ji..aap agar tayyar hain toh Mai aapko drop kar deta hun…"

She had simply nodded her head and left.

One day his mother decided that Kalyani's presence would be good for him and Dhruv would have a mother too and she wanted to get them married.

His dad had objected immediately, "Nahi Anupriya.. ye bohot galat hai.. hamare matlab keliye kisi se apni puri zindagi nahi maangni chahiye…"

"Haan Aai…ye Nahi ho sakta…"

"Ho gaya tum donon ka…? Aisa kya galat bol diya…use ek acha parivaar milega aur Dhruv bhi toh uske paas hoga…paison ki bhi koi kami nahi hai…"

"Aur khushiyon ki…? Kya hamara beta use koi bhi khushi de payega…? Ye nahi socha tumne…!!" Sarthak asked sternly.

But Anupriya was not bothered, "Isse jyada kya Khushi Chahiye hogi use…sab.kuch toh mil raha hai…"

"Rehne do…tum kuch samajhna nahi chahti ho…lekin mujhe ye Shaadi manzoor nahi hai.."

"Maine aap ki raai maangi…? Mai kal Atul ji se milne Aurangabad jaa rahi hun…"

Atharv's thoughts broke as he heard his dad calling him.

Kalyani had found herself alone on the bed. She heard the sound of water and guessed he was in the washroom. An involuntary blush creeped on her face as she remembered laying so close to him.

A call from her office, cut out all her straying thoughts. She had to be there in person today for an important team discussion.

Kalyani was dressed and ready to go. She called out her dad.

"Papa…!! Maine khana bana diya hai…aap donon kha lijiye…mujhe aaj office jaana hai…shaam ko milte hain…"

"Aur tum.."

"Meeting ke baad office me lunch hai papa.."

"Teekh hai beta…dhyan se jaana… Aur..!!"

"Aur kya papa…?"

"Mujhe bataya…Malhar ko bina bataye jaogi tum…? Ye galat hai beta…"

Kalyani fiddled with her bag. Till date she had never informed him when she left for office. But that was then. Now she was changed and she felt she should start with doing the most normal things that couples did. He might be a bit surprised. She giggled.

"Khade khade khee..khee..kya kar rahi ho…? Koi jokes sunaye maine…?"

"Uff papa..jaa toh rahi hun..!!" She rolled her eyes at her dad and went to find her husband.

Malhar was holding the water tube with his good arm and watering the plants.

"Aap ye sab kyun kar rahe hain… aapke haat me dard hoga…"

Malhar turned around, "Thodi si exercise nahi ki toh muscles cramp ho jayenge…aur waise bhi pura din baita bed me lete rehna acha nahi lagta mujhe…"

At the mention of the bed Kalyani blushed a little, "Woh …mai…kal raat ko…aapki neend disturb toh nahi hui na…"

Malhar captured her blushing cheeks in his heart…Disturb Nahi hui.. neend toh udd hi gayi…

"Mmhmm…", she cleared her throat asking for an answer.

"Uhh..Nahi..Nahi..!! bilkul Nahi…!! Achi neend aayi mujhe…aur tum..? Tum ache se so paayi na..?"

"Haan finally…!! warna aaj mujhe jaana padtha physiotherapist ke paas…"

He smiled and she wanted to keep looking but she remembered her meeting.

"Oh god..late ho rahi hun…uhh…!! Malhar mai office jaa ri hun…uhh.. Maine khana banaya hai…aap bhi papa ke saat kha lijiye…bahar ka mat khaiye…"

"Tumhe stress nahi lena chahiye tha…"

"Aisa kuch jyada khaas nahi banaya hai…bas simple dhall chawal hi banaya…aapko medicines bhi leni hai toh please time pe kha lijiye…"

Mere liye ye simple dhall chawal bohot khaas hai…

"Malhar aap sun rahe hain na …? Der ho ri hai mujhe…"

He nodded his head and she jogged away to her waiting rickshaw.

After lunch Malhar left for physiotherapy and also to consult the doctor. He said he would be late.

Atul had a small afternoon nap and was now sitting with a cup of coffee.

He could feel Kalyani's change and he hoped that soon his daughter and son-in-law would begin to build a happy life together. Only by relationship Malhar was a son-in-law, otherwise Atul considered him as a son.

If Malhar had not arrived on time that day, his daughter's fate would have been something he didn't want to imagine.

How could Anupriya ji come with such a proposal…!!

Anupriya looked at the shocked man, "Itna kya soch rahe hain Atul ji…?"

"Maaf kijiye Anupriya ji…mujhe ye rishta manzoor nahi hai…ek beti ko kho chuka hun Mai…aur dusri beti ki zindagi jaante hue barbaad nahi Kar sakta…"

"Barbaad…!!! Itni badi baat bol di aapne…mere bete se Shaadi karke use sab Kuch mil jayega…"

"Meri beti ko kyun adha adhura zindagi mile…uski kya galti hai…?"

"Aapki Sampada jo shaadi se pehle maa banke baiti thi…use sunkar kaun aapki dusri beti se shaadi karna chahega…?"

"Sampada ki galti ka saza Kalyani ko nahi dunga mai…aap please maaf kijiye mujhe…"

"Aapko itni jaldi faisla nahi Lene bol rahi hun…iss baare me Kalyani se bhi baat kijiye…use toh bache se bohot lagav hai...aakhir ek maa ke tarah hi toh use khayal rakha hai Dhruv ka…"

"Woh toh shaadi hi nahi karna chahti…", Atul had sighed.

"Phir…!!! Ye decision toh uskeliye best rahega…bas Dhruv ki maa hi toh banna hai use…baaki Atharv Ka khayal rakhne toh aur log hai…"

Atul couldn't believe the selfishness of this woman, "Dekhiye…!!.."

"Ram..Ram..Deshmukh Saab…!!!", the voice disrupted whatever Atul was going to say.

The moneylender Shrivastav was standing at the door.

Atul got up, "Aap..?"

"Ab bohot mahinon se aapke darshan nahi hue toh socha Mai hi aake dekh lun…kahin mar war toh nahi gaye…!! hain…!!"

"Dekhiye Shrivastav ji…ab ghar me mehman aaye hai…Mai baadme aake aapse milunga…"

"Naa..na…ab yeh sab nahi chalega… aaj toh humko hamare paise ka jawab chahiye…"

"Dekhiye meri beti ne office me loan apply kiya hai…milte hi Mai pura karza settle Kar dunga… bas do teen mahine…."

"Do teen mahine….??? Na Deshmukh Saab…pehle Ka karza aur ab Teri badi beti ke ilaaj Ka karza sab milke ab bohot badi rakam ban chuki hai….Waise kaise baap hai aap…? ek beti ka karza utarne keliye dusri beti ko bin byahi rakha hai…"

"Dekhiye Shrivastav ji aapko aapka paisa mil jayega…abhi please aap yahan se jaiye…", Atul pleaded with folded hands.

"Are aap bura maan gaye…!! Humari itne barson ki pehchan hai…aise kaise aapko takleef me dekh sakte hain.. ek prastav hai aapkeliye…"

"Kaisa prastav..?"

"Aapki saari karz maaf…iske badle aapki beti ka haat mere bete keliye maang raha hun…Woh kya hai na…mere bete ko aapki beti badi pasand aa gayi..!!"

Atul burst out angrily, "Kya bakwaas Kar rahe hain Shrivastav ji…aisa Soch bhi kaise liya aapne…aapka beta kya karta hai pura Aurangabad jaanta hai…meri beti ko aise insaan ke haaton kaise saump dunga…isi wakt chale jaiye yahan se…"

"Gussa..? wah…phir toh hamara gussa bhi dikha denge Deshmukh Saab…Ek hafte ka time deta hun aapko…ya toh aap pure paise with interest chuka dijiye..ya phir apni beti ki shaadi mere bete se karwane tayyar ho jaiye…Mai registrar ko apne saat le aaunga…,"

The man didn't wait for Atul's reply.

Anupriya got from her chair, "Ek prastav mai bhi rakhti hun…agar aap Kalyani ki shaadi Atharv se kar dete hain toh aapka sara karz hum chuka denge… aur toh aur aapki beti Kisi gunde mawali ki biwi Nahi hogi..mere bete ki patni hogi…ek ache khandaan ki bahu hogi…soch lijiye…Mai ek hafte me paison Ka intezaam kar lungi aur uss aadmi ke muh pe maarke usi samay Atharv aur Kalyani ki shaadi register Karwa dungi…ab aapko sochna hai ki Kalyani keliye kaunsa rishta behtar hoga…"

She walked out.

Atul had been stumped. He sat down holding his head.

"Baba…!!!",Malhar shook Atul. "Kya hua hai aapko…teekh hai na aap…?"

"Hmm..kuch nahi beta…Mai teekh hun..bas kuch soch raha tha..."

"Kalyani ki chinta ho rahi hai…? Use aur Der hui toh Mai taxi leke jaunga uske office tak..aap fikar mat kijiye.."

"Tumhare hote Mai kyun uski fikar karunga…", Atul hugged him.

"Baba…!! Aap sach me teekh hai na..?"

"Haan..Haan..teekh hun…chalo Mai aaj raat ka khana banata hun…", Atul smiled and went into the kitchen.

Haww... so basically Anu blackmailed Atul to get Kalyani married to Atharva?! Now I'm curious to find out how she ended up married to Malhar, instead. The rest is kinda self-explanatory and it's now clear why Atul is so fond of Malhar and consuders him as a son.
