If you have contacts in Guwahati, that's great. They will advise you regarding stay and darshan timings etc.

While going from Howrah to Guwahati, enjoy the scenic beauty from train window. If you read any of Rabindranath Tagore or Sarath Chandra's novels, you'll get a feel of it in your journey, esp from New Bongaigaon to Guwahati, independent houses with a pond with full of lotus flowers, small lights here and there, fields and farms, tea estates, sleeping cows on the roads an elephant here and a few monkeys there, it'd be wonderful sight. Enjoy your trip Padma. But be careful while eating food and water.

Try to avoid eating in Naga Land, while going to Shillong.
