The tragedy of having Deepika Padukone as your competitor

TOP 3 till 2012 were Katrina, Deepika and Priyanka, with Kat at number 1 and DP and PC switching. 4th would be Kareena.

Since 2012 its been Deepika, irrespective of whether she had a film release or no. Her filmography from 2012 to 2015 is unbeatable.

Alia was never number 1. Infact Katrina, Kareena and Priyanka are still much more popular...yes even PC, if she does another masala film in BWood everyone would go watch it.

So Deepika has never had any competition for many years now.

Alia was never number 1, not even close...and you cannot be numero uno when ur career is being crafted and films are being handed on platter. Same reason why Kajol despite her hits and much superior acting skills (compared to Alia) was never number 1. The audience won't accept you.

Katty lost her #1 tag in 2013, but still she kept on topping Ormax till 2015. So Ormax is two years late. Deepu ki train Chappak se bohat pehle hi choot chuki hai.

Chapaak was a "niche" movie, I think everyone will agree to that. Her 2014 disastrous film Finding Fanny, directed by Homi Adajania, also had a better start at Rs 5.10 crore.

Not to forget, she was playing an acid attack survivor which cuts off the relatability factor.

Other factors--

1. It clashed with Tanhaji.

2. The trailer was badly cut.

3. JNU incident happened a few days before, which backfired majorly.

After Madhuri, Karishma showed potential post Raja Hindustani. She had even jumped to bigger banners with DTPH. But then she got married in 2003. Had she waited a couple of years she'd have been numero uno...she started pretty young and grew into her features after 2000s.

Early 2000s had that void. The Top 3 was Rani, Preity and Kajol. Kajol lacked the sex appeal and had acting talent, Rani had both and Preity was the cutesy one who fit in both Indian and Western roles and she could act too. All 3 were mainly Dharma/YRF girls out of which Preity was an outsider. Kajol was the most laid back and only did selective big budget A Lister cast films. Rani and Kajol talent was "hidden" coz they stuck to big banners, directors and actors, no one could call a film as theirs. Even tho Rani did Mardaani etc but it was being produced by her husband...again the YRF shadow.

Only Preity did Lakshya, Mission Kashmir, DCH etc (Farhan Akhtar had not gained the star status until Rock On...VVC gained his after Munna Bhai). She stole the spotlight from Rani also in Chori Chori Chupke Chupke. People loved her too... personally I feel she was the closest and could have lasted another few years if JBJ didn't bomb.

So there wasn't a numero uno until Katrina in 2006/7 till 2011. Coz after Madhuri the next name that comes to mind is Katrina and then Deepika.
