Swapnil was born on 18 October 1977 in Girgaon - Zaoba Wadi (Laxmibai Chawl). He did his schooling from Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Parsee Charitable Institution, Charni Road, and later completed his graduation in commerce from Syndenham College (University of Mumbai), in Mumbai. He is also a qualified lawyer.

He started his TV career at the age of nine, when Ramanand Sagar offered him the role of young Kush in the mythological TV series, Uttar Ramayana (1986), a sequel to Ramayana. Ramanand Sagar was to later give him another role, a lead this time, in mythological TV series, Krishna (1993). This role made him immensely popular all over India. As he portrayed a Hindu deity, people virtually worshipped him. There was an incident where he was the chief guest at a public event. When he arrived at the event and started towards the stage, the crowd gathered around him and started taking his blessings by touching his feet. It took him more than 2 hours to get from one end of the ground to the stage. This cult status made him difficult to get work later as people remembered him as 'Krishna' only.Thereafter Swapnil took a break from acting to complete his studies and after finishing college, he made a come back with Sanjeev Bhattacharya's Campus.

He acted in one Marathi serial titled Adhuri Ek Kahani as the character of Yash. But the major turning point in his career came when he was offered the role of Sam, the prodigal son of the Singh household in the much popular soap, that he catapulted to fame. He also undergoes a complete image makeover in the serial. He transforms into a responsible man who sees through his wife's eyes and is ready for a showdown. This soap also made him mature into one of the best artistes of the television industry. His performances in the other soaps like, Amanat (1997), Hudd Kar Di (1999), Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand, a highly popular soap which ran from 2001 to 2005 and Dil Vil Pyar Vyar with Deven Verma, along with a cameo in the Nana Patekar starrer Gulam-E-Mustafa (1997).

The big breakthrough in his career came when he turned to stand-up comedy, looking for new acting directions. He performed in Stand-up comedy show Comedy Circus (Season 1) along with comedian, V.I.P., here Swapnil enacted the art of the sex symbol Rakhi Sawant. Unfortunately he was soon voted out of the show but got another chance to portray his skills through the Wild Card entry. Back in the duo VIP put up a comedy act on the Hijras (Eunuch), in the end the duo were Runner's up in the series. Later, he also took part in the Season 3 Kaante Ki Takkar and Season 6 - Maha Sangram (2010). He was also the winner of Mr. & Mrs. TV (2008) on Sony TV, a reality contest show of best TV actor, along with Purbi Joshi. In 2006, he appeared on Sachin's Kadvee Khatee Meethi on Star One, and three years later returned to sitcom with NDTV Imagine's Ghar Ki Baat Hai (2009). Meanwhile, he also acted in Hindi-comedy play, Tea, Coffee or Me" (2006), along with actors, Sunil Barve and Ritu Chaudhary.

He has hosted the TV reality series, Ladies Special a stand-up comedy show for female comedians on Zee TV (2007) and Chota Packet Bada Dhamaka (2008). In July 2010, his first Marathi film,Mumbai Pune Mumbai, as a solo lead along side Mukta Barve, was released.

He was married to Aparna, who is a dentist by profession. Theirs was a love marriage and they tied the knot in January 2005. Divorced in 2009. He got married to Leena Aradhye (second marriage) on the 16th of December 2011 in a private ceremony, at the Taj Hotel in Aurangabad. Surprisingly, Leena also happens to be a dentist like his first wife.
