I think Sonu's bigger debut hit was his 'Deewana' album rather than 'Acha Sila'..

Anyways coming to this song, there is not much scope for Sonu to show his gaayki in this song. He sang with the feel required. I think he did a good job.

A known and heard track of its time.. But more than the track or its music, its the passionate singing that should be focused upon.. :)

Sonu Nigam's feel in this song is so fantastic.. The painful expressions are so accurately depicted, no where can one hear that he skips away from that strong emotion, which had to be there according to the situation in the video.. His voice resonates nicely and his power to control is visible.. A really good performance for a debut..

Would like to give an 8 out of 10..

In his early years and especially here, Sonu sounded too much like a Rafi clone. Sounding like Rafi is good, but sounding like a Rafi clone (Anwar, Shabbir Kumar, Mohd Aziz) is not. This 'mimicry' was a bit annoying...

He controlled his voice very well though, and expressed well.

I agree with what you said here. Sonu started like a Rafi clone..His real mettle was proved once he started singing in his own voice...

This song has a lot of sentimental ingredients which I'm normally averse to. But Sonu didn't let it go over the top that could easily have happened. His emotions and expression were measured and reined-in. Thanks to his sense of proportion, I can sympathise with the protagonist rather than be put through a sob story.

But still it's an average song for me which didn't provide him with much scope for showing his singing skills.

Sonu Nigam maybe legendary nowadays, but back then, I felt he had less control on his voice.
He was in tune, but the control was not quite there, he was lacking the breath control that was required, you could hear him breathe at frequent intervals. The expressions were there, but he lost it completely towards the end of the song, his voice sounded a bit hoarse towards the end.
A 6!
