Aishwarya’s claim to fame is not being an actor. She was famous even before participating in Miss India. A popular and sought after model..and BW was lining up to cast her even then..she just took her time. Her fame comes from her being the Miss World, Successful model, face of various brands and of course Cannes appearances. Much of the international recognition comes from there.

As for acting..she is a director’s actor. Not the best out there but can be decent like in HDDCS, JA, Taal, Guru, Devdas or Dhoom. Combined with THAT face her roles became memorable.

In wrong hands she can be a disaster..like in Action Replay

Bollywood queueing outside her house and directors waiting for her to sign their movies was a smart hype by her PR. 'She just took her time' is a good excuse to cover up her not getting any movies even after she won Miss World.

The truth is that she didn't get any good offers from Bollywood even after Miss World. She won Miss World in 1994 and it took her 3 years to get her first movie - her debut was in a cameo role in a flop Tamil film. She got her first Bollywood movie in 1997 and that tanked miserably at the box office.

Her strategy of deflecting the blame of her bad acting on the director is very smart. If the film is hit, it's because of her. If the film is flop, it's because she's a director's actress and the director didn't use her "acting skills" properly.

No other actor or actress has ever said that they're director's actor/actress. Raavan was directed by her mentor Mani Ratnam and still it was a flop.
