Here’s one I hadn’t heard in years, Rafi’s voice is sublime as always, I love the slightly lower octave he chose for this song, it suits the mood. And the arrangement by Naushad is genius, the use of the sitar in the interludes! 🤩 Lyrics are by Shakeel, from the film Dillagi (1949) which also has the famous ‘Tu mera chaand main teri chandni’ among other hits. This song stands out for me!

Okay since tomorrow is a Sunday (perhaps it’s today for some of you!) thought I’d share this fun song that I love!

Meri jaan meri jaan Sunday ke Sunday from the movie Shehnai (1947)

Music: C. Ramchandra

Lyrics: P.L Santoshi (ETA: the lyrics are a hoot! 🤣 Especially the last line where he rhymes it with Sunday - डंडे, धंदे I believe there was a झंडे as well! 🤣)

Singers: Ahh apparently there’s some confusion here, I first listened to this song on radio when I was a kid and the Vinyl version is sung by Meena Kapoor & Shamshad Begum. Some research revealed that the screen version has diff female singers: Lalita Deolkar and Amirbai Karnataki. Chitalkar of course is the male singer in both versions!

The actor is Mumtaz Ali (Mehmood’s father) - brings to mind how years later Mehmood did something similar: an anglicized Chaplinesque guy romancing an Indian village belle in ‘Jodi humari jamega kaise jaani’.

The actresses are supposedly Indumati & Rehana, but I must confess I do not recognize Rehana here. Perhaps it’s Dulari who’s also listed in the cast. If anyone knows for sure please let me know!

There’s a fun anecdote that was narrated by Anil Biswas. C. Ramchandra was his assistant those days and apparently Anilda wasn’t too impressed by this musical attempt, so he called him up and asked him what he was trying to do. CR replied: ‘Trying to not sound like you!’ 😆

He definitely succeeded, wouldn’t you say? 😆

ETA: The opening bars sound suspiciously like the interludes in ‘Tadbeer se bigdi huyi’ to me. Does anyone else agree?

ahh this would’ve saved me a lot of time, but then I wouldn’t have had the satisfaction of having researched painstakingly and come up with it on my own (& listened to other fabulous songs while at it!) In other words- technology is great at times but most times the human heart & mind wins! 😆

there's always two ways to do something, the lazy way and the good way it's the gems you find along the tough way that's the real satisfaction 😆

But yeah, just in case you need something right away, humming is better 😳

Sigh! This page has been so mercurial! 😔

In a bid to increase traffic & engagement 😆 I’m giving you all an assignment 😆

Don’t worry! It’s not mandatory to participate & you will still be a welcome member here if you choose not to! 😆 But I thought it would be a fun discussion.

What are your top 3 soundtracks by these Music Directors - choosing only from the 40s through 60s? (No 70s and later please!)

1. Naushad

2. S.D. Burman

3. O.P. Nayyar

4. Shankar-Jaikishen

You can rank them in order of preference or simply list the top 3. You can name just 1 or 2 that stand out for you too. In short, there are no rules except for you to say why you like the soundtrack/s you listed. You can put down your most favorite song and least favorite one from each soundtrack if you like.

I’ll put down mine too once I have some responses. Remember we’re talking entire soundtracks/albums and not just individual songs. Who’s game? 😳
