The more I read Rebecca, the more I'm liking it. I've read just about 30% as of now, and I agree with Anam, the pace is very slow and there's nothing much happening. But it's not bothering me much anymore. I guess it helps that I already knew it was a character driven story, and written in the first person too. Books written in the first person tend to be more like monologues more than a real story.

Are classics never fast-paced?🤓

I actually enjoy books more which are written in first person, but when they are written in present tense instead of past tense its annoying.😆

Rebecca reading update:

Halfway through the book, finally things start moving on, and now at 70% I'm loving this more than ever.❤️

I finished reading Rebecca. Those first few slow chapters were absolutely worth it for the ending it gives.😃

I can't wait to know what all of you thought about it.

I finished the book a while ago and I thought it was amazing. Not a 5 star read, but close. I don’t think I have finished reading a classic this quickly. The descriptions were necessary and helped create an atmosphere for the reader to imagine Manderley vividly.

Was the shining a classic too?😲 No wonder I found it so long and difficult to read.

I am almost halfway through Rebecca, I like the story. My only annoyance is that the chapters are too long.

The Shining was published over 40 years ago so I guess it can be considered a classic. Stephen King is one author who likes building up the atmosphere for the reader to really immerse themselves. His earlier novels tended to be long. Nowadays, I don’t think he writes anything that goes beyond 400-450 pages.

@Diya: Same. Even I don’t really like descriptions of nature all that much. Descriptions in thrillers like the evidence and the mind games and the unravelling of the truth, that I like 😛

Not all classics are long. Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451, 1984, The Great Gatsby are amongst the shorter classics. I guess it depends on the author and what she/he is writing about.

so it was written around the same period as sidney sheldon novels

for me, classic is anything before 1950😆

Same. I can relate to the character more in that way. But I am also beginning to like appeal of reading books in third person, especially historical fiction. One is transported back in time.

To add in the list, the picture of dorian gray was 250 pages. The old man and the sea is mere 128 pages.

I want to know what you all think about what should be the appropriate length of a novel

I think 250-270 pages are enough.
