"BATTLE OF THE SEXES!" - A SHRAMAN SS
*"Dost...Dost Na Raha...Pyar...Pyar Na Raha...Zindagi Humain Tera Aitabar Na Raha..."
"How could you Suman?" said Shravan angrily as he confronted Suman in his room.
He had come home from the office after spending a few hours there, where he had found his Father, his uncle and Suman in the hall together.
Within minutes of his arrival his father had congratulated him on his decision to "Get married". He had then informed him that it was Suman that had told him and his uncle that he was ready for marriage, that in fact he was more than happy to consider it. To say that Shravan had been shocked was an understatement. He had looked at Suman with shocked eyes. She had looked back at him with an expression of desperation mixed with anxiety. What was she up to? WHY had she said that to his family?
"But Papa...I..." Shravan was saying when his Dad stopped him.
"It's OK Shravan. Suman told Lala and I that you are too embarrassed to discuss this topic with us! To be honest after that Urvashi incident, I didn't think you will want to go down the marriage path this soon! But...looks like I was wrong!" said his Father with a smile.
"Ha Ha Puthar ji... don't worry! Hum thumhare liye uss Urvashi se kahi zyada achi ladki doondenge! Said his uncle.
"Lekin Lala Ji..." Shravan tried once more in desperation.
"Arrey...sharmao math puthar ji! Ab tumhare Shadi ka age hogaya hain!" he turned to his brother and smiled. "Bai sahab, hum Kamini ko phone karkain yeh kush kabri detha hu" he said as he walked in the direction of his room.
"Shravan, even I have some important files to go over now that I am going to hand them over to you! We will discuss it later. You catch up with Suman!" said his Dad as he also walked away to his room.
Shravan and Suman had been left in the hall alone together. Shravan had looked at Suman with barely concealed anger in his eyes.
"What the HELL was that?" said Shravan in a low but murderous tone. Suman had actually started to look a bit frightened.
"Shravan...I can explain...I"
"You better have a very good explanation for this..." said Shravan his jaw tightening in anger when their man Friday Kamal came into the room.
"Shravan Baba...Aap coffee lenge?" he asked with a little bit of hesitation, as if sensing the tension in the room.
"Nahi...Nahi...Kamal ji...Abhi nahi...Thank you!" he said with a small smile. As Kamal exited the room, Shravan turned back to Suman.
"You...come with me!" he said in an ominous tone as he took Suman by the hand and led her up the stairs to his room. After entering the room he closed the door as he led Suman to the middle of the room and let go of her hand, only to confront her angrily.
"How could you Suman?" he said, and Suman noticed that this was the first time in weeks he had called her "Suman". He was really angry.
"Shravan...listen to me...I..." Suman said as she stopped and looked at Shravan. She was lost for words.
"Yes I am listening!" said Shravan with a raise of his browse. "But I am not hearing anything that makes sense to me! Like why the hell you would tell my family that I want to Get Married?" Shravan said his anger barley in control now.
"That...that was a mistake...I"...Suman stuttered again. Seeing Shravan's anger she was starting to feel apprehensive about the hasty decision she had made. In her anger at his apparent nonchalance towards her marriage news, she had gone out on a limb to get him in trouble by telling his Dad and uncle that Shravan wanted to get married. It had almost felt like a joke to her at the time. But looking at Shravan's expression it was clear he did not find it funny in the least.
"Yes...it was a mistake. MY mistake!" said Shravan.
"What do you mean?"
"My mistake was trusting you! For a moment there I forgot...you are a woman too!" said Shravan with a bitter twist to his lips.
"What does THAT mean?" asked Suman her eyes widening.
"What it means Suman...is that tum bhi ek aurat ho! Aur aurat kabhi barose ki layak nahi hothi! I was the fool who forgot that important fact!"
"What the hell are you talking of Shravan? How can you say such a thing?" said Suman angrily, as all fear fled her in the wake of his statement.
"How can I say such a thing? How can I say what is true you mean?"
"What is 'true'?" Are you serious?"
"You know what they say...the truth is bitter!"
"You think your biased opinions are true? You are delusional!" said Suman her eyes flashing.
"Correction! I WAS delusional! I was delusional enough to think that I can trust a woman enough to let her into my life again! You betrayed me once, but I was willing to let that go. I thought I was doing the right thing, becoming friends with you again. But you proved yet again that you're no different from countless other women! Women like that Urvashi who you thought yourself to be so far above! Well turns out your selfish and a game player just like her!"
"How dare you compare me with that Urvashi?"
"What is different about her and you? She manipulates to get her way. She wants what she wants! YOU manipulated your position as my friend to influence my Dad. I let it go when you did that regarding Papa giving me the practice...but THIS? You have gone too far Suman!" said Shravan looking at her with a bitter expression.
Suman realised that in his eyes she had really gone too far. She knew why she was doing this, but he didn't. However, she was shocked to hear those lines about women coming out of his mouth. It was almost like she had never met this version of Shravan before. He clearly had some issues on the subject and maybe her actions in the past contributed to his beliefs. Suman stopped and took a breath.
"Look Shravan...I know it was a mistake to tell Ramnath uncle and Lalaji that you wanted to get married. But I was just giving you a taste of your own medicine. You didn't seem to even care that I was not happy about the whole "Nanu wants me to get married" issue. You were even willing to vet guys for me? You told Lalaji you wanted him to make my wedding day memorable? I mean come on...? Like are you serious?" said Suman shaking her head.
"So because you were angry at me, rather than talking to me about it, rather than voicing your issues, you decided to play games? To manipulate me? You thought to teach me a lesson for my so called uncaring attitude towards your 'unhappiness' at getting married?"
"Yeah well...I mean now you know how it feels!" said Suman with a small shrug.
Shravan looked at her, his lips pursing in disgust.
"THIS is what I mean! Tum aurathai apni mathlab nikal ne ke liye kuch bhi kar sakthi ho...kisi bhi had thak ghir sakthi ho!"
"Now you are the one going too far Shravan. Tum apni had bhool rahe ho!" said Suman angrily.
"No Suman...TUM apni had bhool chuki ho! But let me remind you of it! Just coz your my friend, don't think you can use that to control me! Don't think you can walk all over me!"
"I was NOT! For God sake's will you listen?" said Suman in an exasperated tone.
"If you weren't trying to manipulate me, then what were you doing by telling Papa and Lalaji I want to get married, when it is the LAST thing I want to do?"
"I told you why I did it. I was too hasty I agree. It was dumb of me, but I wanted you to understand how it feels when people try to put you in a position you don't want to be. As a friend I expected you to understand how I felt about what Nanu wanted. But instead...tum apni family ke saath meri so called Shaadi ki kushiyan mana rahe teh?"
"As a friend, I was trying to be happy for a big chapter in your life?"
"You know what...maybe did you think I don't WANT you to be happy? Maybe I want you to NOT be happy with the idea of me getting married?"
Shravan shook his head. "Tum auratain humesha confused kyon rahe thi ho? Like do you guys even know what you want?" he asked sarcastically.
Suman could feels her heckles rising. "Maybe...agar tum maard itne bewakoof nahi hothain...then maybe we would not be so confused as you call it?"
"Maard bewakoof hai? That's rich coming from a woman! Women can't seem to think logically!"
"You're a damn MCP you know that?" said Suman. "You were not like this in your teens!"
"In my teens I was a naive blind fool. Not anymore"
"I liked that naive blind fool. He was a damn sight better than this MCP version of you! I don't know where you get these notions?"
"I get these notions from having experienced them. From knowing first-hand what it's like to be used and discarded by a woman!"
"If you're talking about the silly teenage version of me, and my behavior, then I think we both know you can't judge women-kind by that!" said Suman in a sarcastic tone.
"I am talking about my Mother!"
