Hello Friends & fellow music lovers! 🤗

It's my first time hosting a theme on here! 😎

So let me jump right in.

Songs usually always tell a story but more importantly, they help move a story forward.

Especially in Indian films (and Hollywood musicals), you often see songs employed as a means to push the plot along, set up, intensify or resolve an important plot point.

So this week's theme will be songs that appear to be substitutes for dialogue/ spoken words.

In other words, songs that run as a conversation or banter or debate between two or more characters.

They can be for any situation, just remember there need to be two or more people singing in it. You can have them bickering, debating, pleading/persuading, being in agreement, teasing, questioning/ answering - just that it needs to flow like a conversation would.

There are gazillions of songs - most filmi (and non-film) duets are conversations of one form or the other, right?😳

I'm going to post a few to start you off right after the post I reserve for compiling all the songs posted on this thread.

As always, language is no bar and as always, please try not to repeat songs.

You can also have one character singing/ narrating and the other speaking in reaction.

A debate

This friendly debate stage show where the characters are presenting different points of view from the movie Dhool ka Phool (1959).

The Male lead presents a rosy and perhaps a rather naive picture of love and fidelity, wanting to give her his heart and ready to forsake all for her and she warns him of the consequences of doing so while telling him to be more worldly and realistic.

He says: Mujhe loot lo mere nazdeek aake, ki main maut se khelna chahta hoon

She says: Nibhengi yahan kaise ulfat ki rasmein? Yahan zindagi hai ravajon ke bas mein

Ravajon ko tum todna chahte ho.. bade nasamajh ho, ye kya chahte ho?

Music: N. Dutta

Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi

Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Mahindra Kapoor

Actors: Rajendra Kumar, Mala Sinha

This one is in a similar vein but it's more personal/ teasing/ and filled with banter.

He wonders why people fall in love and subject themselves to the agony and despair

Pyaar mein sar jhukana padta hai, dard mein muskurana padta hai

Zeher kyon zindagi mein bharte hain?

And she gently reminds him that there is no life without love while slyly insinuating that he too might be one of those afflicted -

Log chhup chhup ke pyaar karte hain, jaane kyon saaf kehte darte hain?

Film: Dil Chahta hai (2001)

Music: Shankar Ehsaan Loy

Lyrics: Javed Akhtar

A question/ answer type of back and forth and so much in sync that they almost seem to complete each other's sentences.

At the end of each stanza of rapid-fire back and forth they both realize something about the other.. That they're

Dekhne mein bhole... par hain bade chanchal! smiley36

Film: Nau do Gyarah (1957)

Music: S.D. Burman

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

A roothna- manana type song where one person is trying their best to appease the other while the other is sulking (sometimes pretending to) and then eventually gives in.

Her persuasion is less that and more than laced with the hint of a threat & defiance..

Jaate ho toh jao, chal diye jee hum bhi (more like I could care less) And

Tum bhi jaloge, haath maloge roothke humse haan! [or in other words, you're gonna regret this, buddy! smiley36]

He pretends to be miffed for a while and then calls her out on her placating skills or lack thereofsmiley2

Kya lagayi tumne ye kasam kasam se?

Lo theher gaye hum, kuch kaho bhi humse!

Film: Tumsa nahi dekha (1957)

Music: O.P. Nayyar

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Singers: Asha Bhosle, Mohammed Rafi

Actors: Ameeta, Shammi Kapoor

Yet another type of rivalry where two men are arguing over why they are the right person for a certain woman! Perhaps they should both stop calling her 'doggone' girl first! 😆

Priya, you've chosen an excellent theme. This theme has inspired an immense number of songs! Well tuned conversations are always melodious!

When love is communicated in a pleasant musical style, it takes on an entirely different level of beauty.

This is one of the all-time favorite romantic songs of this couple!

Actor(s): Kishore Kumar & Madhubala
