Lyrics

Sarayū-tīrāvarī

Ayodhyā Manu-nirmita nagarī

On Sarayū's bank

Ayodhyā, a city founded by Manu

Tyā nagarīcyā viśālatevara

Ubhyā rāhilyā vāstū sundara

Madhuna vāhatī mārga samāntara

Ratha vājī gaja pathika çālatī naṭunī tyāñcyāvarī

Upon that city's expanse

Rise up beautiful edifices

Amidst them flow parallel roads

Chariots, horses, elephants, pedestrians travel along them, decorated

Gharāgharāvara ratna-toraṇeṃ

Avatībhaṃvatī ramya upavaneṃ

Tyāṃta raṅgatī nṛtya-gāyaneṃ

Mṛdaṅga vīṇā nitya nādatī Alakā-nagarīparī

On house after house, jewel-awnings

Everywhere around, pleasant parks

Where are performed dances and songs

Drum and lute perpetually sound, as in Alakā city

Striyā pati-vratā puruṣahi dhārmika

Putra upazatī nija-kula-dīpaka

Nṛśaṃsa nā kuṇi kuṇi nā nāstika

Atṛptīçā kuṭhe na vāvara nagarīṃ gharīṃ antarīṃ

Women observant of husbands, men moral too

Children are born to illuminate their families

No one cruel, no one irresponsible

Discontent has nowhere to loiter in city, in home, or in heart

Ikṣvāku-kula-kīrti-bhūṣaṇa

Rājā Daśaratha dharma-par'āyaṇa

Tyā nagarīçeṃ karito rakṣaṇa

Gṛhīṃ Candrasā nagarīṃ Indrasā Sūrya zasā saṃgarīṃ

Ornament to the Ikṣvāku clan's fame

King Daśaratha whose course is moral

Gives protection to that city

At home, moonlike; in the city, rainlike; sunlike in battle!

Daśarathāsa tyā tighī bhāryā

Suvaṃśajā tyā sumukhī āryā

Siddha patīcyā sevā-kāryā

Bahu-śrutā tyā rūpa-śālinī atula-prabhā sundarī

Daśaratha has those three wives

Born of good dynasties, nice-faced, noble

Expert at the work of serving their husband

Much educated, they're figure-endowed, incomparably radiant beauties

Tighī striyāñcyā prīta saṃgamīṃ

Tinhī lokiṃçeṃ sukha ye dhāmīṃ

Eka uṇeṃ paṇa gṛhasth'āśramīṃ

Putr'odaya paṇa azunī navhatā prītīcyā ambarīṃ

Through the three women's friendly unity

All three worlds' comfort comes to the home

Yet one thing's lacking in the householder status

There was not yet a child's rise in the sky of love

Śalya eka teṃ Kausalyesī

Dise Sumitrā sadā udāsī

Kaika Kaikayī karī navasāsī

Daśarathāsahī vyathā eka tī chaḷite abhyantarī

That was the Kosala woman's one wound

Sumitrā was always seen despondent

The Kekaya woman made numerous pledges

Daśaratha too this one worry troubled within

Rāja-saukhya teṃ saukhya janāṃçeṃ

Ekaça cintana lakṣa manāṃçeṃ

Kāya kāza yā saukhya-dhanāçeṃ

Kalpa-tarūlā phūla nase kāṃ vasanta saralā tarī

The king's happiness is happiness for the people

Only one obsession for a hundred thousand minds

What use is this happiness or property?

Why has the wishing-tree no flower although spring has gone by?

Lyrics

Ramya hī svargāhūna Laṅkā

Hicyā kīrticyā sāgara-laharī nādavitī ḍaṅkā

More delightful than heaven is this Laṅkā

Ocean-waves sound her fame's gathering-drum

Suvarṇa-kamalāparī hī nagarī

Phulūna daravaḷe niḷyā sāgarī

Tyā kamalāvara candra nija-kare karito abhiṣekā

Like a golden lotus, this city

Blooming, spreads on the blue ocean

On that lotus, the moon pours with its rays

Lakṣmī-Laṅkā doghī bhaginī

Ubhaya upazalyā yā jaladhītunī

Yā Laṅkeçe dāsī-pada tarī Kamalā gheīla kā?

Prosperity and Laṅkā are two sisters

Both were born out of this ocean

Yet will the Lotus-Goddess accept servitude to this Laṅkā?

I discovered this song thanks to the theme

Movie: Chaudhvin ka Chaand

Song: Ye Lucknow Ki Sar Zameen

City: Lucknow

While Chaudhvin ka Chaand is known mostly for its title song, its credits song often goes undiscussed.
