For this Hindi song in 1993, Bhupen Hazarika reused the tune that he originated in 1963 with this Assamese song that I shared in TOTW #2:

In 1977, he had reused it for this Bangla song (now shared in TOTW #5):

Bhupen Hazarika only sang the Hindi song himself to guide Lata Mangeshkar at her request. Kalpana Lajmi who directed the movie Rudālī knew that the scene of Śanicarī's transition to widowhood shouldn't have a male voice, but she couldn't resist including this beautiful rendition of the song. It amused Bhupen Hazarika that after decades of excellent work, he became famous to a Hindi audience this way.

I am a huge fan of Bhupen Hazarika be it his Assmese songs be it Bengali songs. His style of rendition is unmatchable and unbeatable.

Thank you for this wonderful theme, Rashmi and everyone else for posting traditional folk songs and dances such as Lavani, Koli, Garba and Bhangra that were so much part of popular culture for me growing up and still are.

I’ll take this opportunity to present a folk dance from TamilNadu called Karakkattam, Karakkam meaning Water pot and Attam is any form of dance. This folk dance is generally performed to invoke the goddess of rain, Mariamman and bless the land with bountiful harvest. The songs are usually based off of Raagam Amritavarshini - believed to be the Carnatic raag that invokes rain (similar to Hindustani Megh Malhar though not its equivalent) Here’s a famous Karakkatam song from the movie Karakkatakaran (1989), which is said to have revived this folk dance and the actors and performers - Ramarajan and Kovai Sarala are still associated with this song- Manguyile Poonguyile. Music is by Ilaiyaraja, lyrics by Gangai Amaran and sung by S.P. Balasubramaniam and S. Janaki.

Another Tamilnadu folk dance is the Poikkal Kuthurai Attam (False legged horse dance) usually performed by artists representing the king and queen in worship of the deity Aiyanar, who is believed to be an incarnation of Ayyappan.

Here’s a song from Padai Veetu Amman (2002) performed by Meena, music by S.A. Rajkumar, lyrics by Kalidasan, sung by K.S. Chitra that showcases both these art forms- Poikkal Kuthurai and Karakkatam.
