This is a heartbreaking lullaby, the situation is like, her silent admirer, the boatman who used to ferry the daughter of the Zamindar of that jagir, developed a special bond [[love?] with her. When she lost her husband, after a month of marriage, she came back to her parent's home. On that occasion, the boatwala sings this song with a philosophical note about life to give her solace.

Another story is -- when Sonia Gandhi lost Rajiv, in bomb blast, she was completely devastated to see the pieces of her husband, to give her solace, someone sent this song with English meaning to her. She was deeply moved by this gesture.
