The beautiful words belong to Gajanan Digambar Madgulkar. According to aathavanitli-gani.com, the composer is Vasant Pawar, not Vasant Desai. Edited to add: the movie itself credits Vasant Pawar at the 1:05 mark.

One of my life's rare filmy moments occurred when a gastroenterologist started to sing this lullaby while thrusting a probe down the throat of his patient, promptly forgot the words, and asked me to finish the song for him.

I already shared this song in TOTW #1 - Celebrating Mothers and Family, but why not repeat it here?

Madālasā sang a unique lullaby to her son Vikrānta:

The Saṃskṛta text is from Mārkaṇḍeyapurāṇa. Music composed in Rāga Kāfī by Gaiea (Gabriella Burnel), who is also the singer.

This Marathi lullaby was written for a fictional portrayal of Rukmiṇī, the mother of saints Nivṛtti, Jñānadeva, Sopāna, and Muktā in the 13th century. Her husband Viṭṭhala has resolved to drown himself to expiate his sin of returning from renunciate life to beget children, for which sin the whole family is shunned by brāhmaṇa society. Rukmiṇī intends to follow her husband in suicide, leaving her young children to fend for themselves in a hateful world.

Song: Nīza Vo ŚrīHarī

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

Movie: Santa Nivṛtti-Jñānadeva (1960)

Actor: Sulochana

Lyricist: Gajanan Digambar Madgulkar

Music: C. Ramachandra

Lyrics

नीज वो श्रीहरी, चांद ये मोहरू

नन्दराणी तुला गातसे हल्लरू

Nīza vo ŚrīHarī, çānda ye moharū

Nanda-rāṇī tulā gātase hallarū

Sleep, oh splendid Hari, the moon grows bright

Nanda's queen sings a lullaby to you

विहगगण झोपला, झोपि गेले तरू

वात हळुवारसा लागला वावरू

झोपली गाउली, झोपले वासरू

Vihaga-gaṇa zhopalā, zhopi gele tarū

Vāta haḷuvārasā lāgalā vāvarū

Zhopalī gā'ulī, zhopale vāsarū

The bird-flock sleeps, the trees are asleep

The wind has begun to loiter gently

The little cow's asleep, the calf's asleep

नीज वो श्रीधरे, नीज वो सावळे

माझिया मांडिये स्वर्गसुख पेंगुळे

शान्तरस त्यावरी घालते पांघरू

Nīza vo Śrīdhare, nīza vo sāvaḷe

Mājhiyā māṇḍiyā svarga-sukha peṅguḷe

Śānta-rasa tyāvarī ghālate pāṅgharū

Sleep, oh Śrīdhara, sleep, oh dusky one

On my thigh, doze off in heavenly comfort

Peaceful mood I spread upon it as a blanket

आणखी जपतपा काय मी आचरू

ब्रह्म ते माझिया पोटिचे लेकरू

आस मी कोणती आज चित्ती धरू

Āṇakhī japa-tapā kāya mī ācarū

Brahma te mājhiyā poṭiçe lekarū

Āsa mī koṇatī āza cittī dharū

What more prayer or penance should I follow?

Transcendence itself is the child of my womb

Which ambition should I contemplate today?
