This thread is filled with some of the classics and my favourites

Adding one of my recent favs

Parmanu is a movie all about patriotism. But the song, Kasumbi, is the voice of every patriot's heart who is determined to do something for their country and won't stop until the world has recognized the brilliance of their motherland.

This song is from a movie about the 1942 Quit India Movement, starring Sunita Deshpande, who had taken part in the actual events.

Song: Zhaḍalyā Bherī, Zhaḍato Ḍaṅkā

Singers: Sudhir Phadke, Malati Pande

Movie: Vande Mātaram (1948)

Actors: Purushottam Lakshman Deshpande, Sunita Deshpande

Music: Sudhir Phadke

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Da0sRCWD-Zk

Lyrics

झडल्या भेरी, झडतो डंका

पुढचे पाऊल पुढेच टाका

Zhaḍalyā bherī, zhaḍato ḍaṅkā

Puḍhaçe pāūla puḍheça ṭākā

Battle-drums roll, gathering-drum rolls

With your next step, only march ahead!

तोंड लागले आज लढ्याला

चहूबाजूंनी येईल घाला

छातीवरती शस्त्रे झेला

फिरू नका रे, डरू नका

Toṇḍa lāgale āza laḍhyālā

Çahūbājūṃnī yeīla ghālā

Chātīvaratī śastre jhelā

Phirū nakā re, ḍarū nakā

Our face is to the battle today

From all four sides will come the onslaught

Catch the weapons on your chests!

Don't turn around! Don't be scared!

शपथ तुम्हाला शिवरायाची

मराठमोळ्या मर्दुमकीची

समर्थ गुरु - केसरी टिळकांची

विजयाच्या या ऐका हाका

Śapatha tumhālā Śivarāyācī

Marāṭhamoḷyā mardumakīcī

Samartha Guru - Kesarī Ṭiḷakāñcī

Vijayācyā yā aikā hākā

You're sworn by King Śivājī

By genuine Marāṭhā boldness

By Samartha Guru Rāmadāsa and Lion Ṭiḷaka

Listen to these calls of Victory!

निशाण अपुले उंच धरा

शूरपणाची शर्थ करा

कराच किंवा रणी मरा

बहाद्दरांनो, मरणा जिंका

Niśāṇa apule uṃça dharā

Śūrapaṇācī śartha karā

Karāça kiṃvā raṇī marā

Bahāddarāṃno, maraṇā jiṅkā

Lift high our emblem!

Practise utmost bravery!

Just do or die in battle!

Heroes, triumph over Death!

This reminds me of the poem by Zaverchand Meghani - Ho Raj Mane Lagyo Kasumbi No Rang

https://youtu.be/glFB6cz29-Y

Kasumbi refers to either opium which deepens when it's mixed or the flowers of Kesuda (saffron/orange flowers) also known as flame of forest.

A translation I found https://isknowledgepower.wordpress.com/2015/02/19/poetry-in-translation-%E0%AA%95%E0%AA%B8%E0%AB%81%E0%AA%82%E0%AA%AC%E0%AB%80/

At the earth’s very core

Lies કસુંબી.

Its life-blood

Intoxicates me

With the colour of કસુંબી.

My sister’s lullaby

Is tuned with કસુંબી.

At the foothills

As the day breaks

Rises a dawn of કસુંબી.

Our heroes’ bodies

Are spattered with કસુંબી.

At the martyrs’ graves

By the red river

Blooms કસુંબી.

The saints’ sitars lilt

With a melody of કસુંબી.

And my lover’s feet

Are henna-kissed

The colour of કસુંબી.

Our poets’ verses sing

A dream of કસુંબી .

Questions flood of

when the heroes’ blood

was mixed with કસુંબી.

Our wounded weep

Tears full of કસુંબી,

Which flow to the fires

Of the martyrs’ pyres

Which burn with કસુંબી.

A poor man’s blush

Is the colour of કસુંબી.

The glow on the hungry

dead warrior’s mother

Symbolises કસુંબી.

So drink deep down

from the chalice of કસુંબી;

and rejoice

as you sink and drown

in the colour of કસુંબી.

The word કસુંબી (pronounced kasumbi) is used to represent the colour orange-red. It’s a flower that was used for dye. However, the freedom fighter Jhaverchand Meghani uses it as an extended metaphor for it also relates to the hue of opium that is regarded as an ‘elixir of life’. This hue represents to many the colour of life with all feelings poured into it. My mum’s friend Aruna explained it to me as more than human survival or mere existance, but rather something much more meaningful-a country or life to be proud of. The colour represents more than one thing- it shows spirituality (the colour of priests), the beauty of nature, blood, hope, love, death and courage (the colour of the rajput soldiers). It is for this reason I felt I could do no justice in translating the word literally as just the colour, because especially at a time where India was seeking independence, the word કસુંબી represented so much more than a colour for Meghani and India at the time.
