oOo
The scene unfolding before him looked straight out of a Gothic horror movie. The storm, the thunder, the chaos. But what nature presented was nothing on the storm brewing within him. The tumult, the disquiet, the cacophony, the chaos. His heart longed for solitude, for peace.
He has oblivious to his surroundings. His feet simply following the silent whisper of his heart. Only when he stumbled on a fallen branch did he take in the place.
Why did he come here
Because your heart wanted to
He closed his eyes in pain. This was their secret place, their secluded hide out. Their own little world far away from the maddening crowd. This place held memories of a happier time. A time when she was his. A time when she had held his heart. When he had belonged. When he felt loved & cherished.
Why had god cruelly snatched away his happiness & everything he held beloved in a single sweeping stroke. His parents were the kindest, altruistic people he had ever know. What had they done to deserve such demeaning end. The scorn & disdain from the very people they had looked after.
Why had she betrayed him
He was now mature & intelligent enough to understand that she had been too young at that time to realize the gravity of her actions & the gory aftermath. But what broke him was her apathy. How could she be so nonchalant after all that had happened. Why did she never try to search him. Why did she never try to find the truth behind those cataclysmic events 16 years back. Why did she not feel any remorse or guilt. How could she continue to love her greedy family. How could she idolize her murdering, scheming mother.
And most important how could she not recognize him. The moment he had stepped in Allahabad & spotted her in the temple his heart knew who she was though her current petite beauty was a far cry from the fiery child that he had known 16 years back. Despite his hatred his heart had raced impatiently in her vicinity & he still felt that enigmatic pull. He had tempered this attraction with scornful words which had hurt her. But he could not lie to himself that this strange, inexplicable connect between them did not exist. But she had been immune to his charms. She had not attempted to even understand his emotions & motives. She seemed to simply accept everything at face value. Be it her mother's fake words or his volatile hatred. Why was she so placidly receptive of everything. Did she never think of her own. Why did she always choose to be a mere pawn throughout her life.
Why did her heart not recognize her Dev
Why Why Why
His tears mingled agonizingly with the rain water pouring down his visage. Even the clouds seemed to weep at his anguish.
Noises penetrated the thick fog around his brain. Foot crunching on branches. His head whipped up violently & his eyes collided with those striking black orbs.
Chandni...
Why had she come here. What did she want.
She stood silently immobile watching him & he gasped.
She knew...
She crumbled slowly to the ground & he noticed tear tracks marring her angelic face. Her visage mirrored his. Wrought with pain, anguish, misery & heartbreak.
Dev... Her voice broke.
She was shivering violently.
Why... Her cry almost a desperate wail.
Because your family killed my parents.
Because I lost my loved ones.
Because I had to desert my brother
He stood up & walked slowly towards her. He was shaking. But unlike her it was from raging emotions & not fear.
He looked straight into her eyes
Because you betrayed me & broke my heart
Because you broke me
The last two lines were merely whispers but to her miserable heart it felt like deafening screams. Each word splintering, rupturing & searing her soul, making her heart bleed.
Now you know who I am
Now you know why I hate you
I am not done with you. I need to inflict as much suffering as you inflicted on me. Every pain that you gave me is a gift for me to cherish & return multifold.
This is your destiny Chandni, to suffer at my hands. And this is my destiny to avenge my parents & quench my thirst for revenge.
This is not the end Chandni. Just the beginning. We have a long way to go. Fellow travelers in this tumultuous path. Your suffering would be my salvation, your tears my triumph, your pain my peace, your misery my madness, your grief my gift. I will break you. Your strength, your dignity, your heart, your soul. I would break it all & then finally we will be equals. Broken & damaged. Shunned & Shattered. Then we would be even & I will finally rest in peace.
Your torment starts now. Be ready to be betrayed & broken Chandni. Because that is all you deserve. Nothing more, Nothing less...
She looked straight into his eyes. He was startled to see the strength in them.
You broke me the day you distrusted me Dev. You broke me the day you disowned our love. You broke me the day you believed I was capable of all that you just accused me of. There is nothing left to break Dev. The day you tarnished my love with your wrongful accusations is the day I truly died. This body that you see is just an empty shell devoid of life. Do your best or rather your worst. But you cant break me. Because you cant break that which doesn't exist. You cant break my soul because its already insentient. You cant break my strength because my strength is my Dev. You cant break my heart because I have long since lost it to you. How can I lose something which no longer belongs to me. You may not be able to stop hating me. But neither can you make me stop loving you.
Every pain that you give me is a gift for me cherish as long as it reduces yours. I can take it Dev. I am used to being hated & not wanted by anyone. Why should you be any different. I wanted to be your partner to love & nurture you. Well let me now be your partner to take your pain & give you peace.
Remember Dev long after I have left you for ever. I always loved you & always will. With or without your consent. Your heart will always be with me & you can never deny me that right.
She collapsed completely.
He stared at her inert body. He wanted to be dispassionate. He wanted to rejoice. But all he felt was this numbing emptiness within.
Why was he not feeling happy at the downfall of his foe. Why was he not exulting at her surrender. Why did this victory feel hollow. And why was he unable to stop those wretched tears bedewing his eyes. Why was he crying for her
Why Why Why
And his treacherous heart whispered its reply
Because you love her
The Truth shattered him...
