Preview of MI vs KKR: 51st Match in the IPL 2024

Mumbai Indians have nothing to lose as they can reach a maximum of 14 points in the best-case scenario (of winning the remaining four games), an unlikely proposition for earning a knockout berth. It will, however, be another test for skipper Hardik Pandya, who has avoided bowling all four overs in all games (he bowled out his quota only in three of the 10 games he played), to prove his full fitness. But with nothing to lose, they can dangerously be the party-poopers for the Knight Riders, who have been one of the better teams this IPL season.

With six wins in nine games giving them 12 points and the second position in the IPL points table, a berth in the playoffs looks within the grasp of two-time winners KKR. For Mumbai Indians, the race to the IPL playoffs seems lost even though the five-time winners have five more games to play. Even if Mumbai Indians win each of these, they can only get to 16 points and somewhere in the middle of the points table — not necessarily challenging those who have been consistently good.

Hardik's poor performance vs bat

With his team in tatters, Hardik failed to click with the bat yet again. Hardik fell off the first ball to fresh bait tossed in on the fuller length by Naveen-ul-Haq, pushing hard and offering a regulation catch to Rahul off the thick outside edge. Leaving the PowerPlay at 27 for four, the second-lowest of the season, MI were always playing catch up to reach a fighting total.

Iyer sees Kolkata through vs DC

Rinku couldn’t capitalise on the chance as he was surprised by a rising delivery from Williams, which induced a top-edge taken by Kuldeep.

However, Delhi’s hopes for a turnaround were snuffed out by Shreyas Iyer who struck back-to-back boundaries in the 11th over to relieve any pressure. The skipper, along with Venkatesh Iyer, slowly and steadily sapped the energy out of the Delhi players on a sultry evening with occasional boundaries and plenty of twos and singles.

The grind was fully reflected when a tired Williams let a ball slip through his fingers near the boundary for a four in the dying stage of the match.

Interesting news!!

“How does it feel, Rohit, to captain somebody, then be captained (by the same person) and captain (that player) again?”

Rohit Sharma had been fashionably late. The India captain was in the building almost 45 minutes after the scheduled time for a press conference for which the selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar arrived almost 45 minutes before time!

And by the time he settled into a comfy-looking leather chair and was asked the first question about India’s team for next month’s T20 World Cup, Rohit had the look of a man who would’ve preferred to be anywhere else but at the Wankhede Stadium.

Rohit smiled his typical wry smile.

“It’s part of life, not everything will go your way,” he said, trying to sound philosophical. “Before in my life, I have not been captain, so it’s nothing new to me. Whatever is there, is there and you go by it, do what is required from you. I have only tried to do that in the last month or so.”

Kolkata have momentum on their side. Expect them to break their 12-year jinx at the Wankhede. Notably, Sunil Narine starred with 4-15 during their last win at the venue. All eyes will be on him as he has had an excellent all-round season, so far.

Can KKR break the shackles?

Kolkata Knight Riders has lost its last seven games against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, with its last triumph coming all the way back in 2012.
