YRF paid Maratha Mandir after a point to keep running DDLJ. It didn't organically run for 20+ years
Hum aapkem hain kaun ran in PACKED THEATERS for FIVE YEARS ACROSS THE WHOLE INDIA.
Madhuri in one of her interview stated there used to be long LINES of people over the roads standing to get the tickets for HAHK even after many years of its release throughout the country.
DDLJ ran mainly on ONE theatre at just ONE SHOW with very low-ticket rates.
HAHK has the HIGHEST FOOTFALLS in the HISTORY of Indian cinema so far, even beat SHOLAY, mother India and mughal e azam's footfalls.
In ADJUSTED NET HAHK is at NUMBER ONE defeted even Babhubali, while DDLJ is at no 4 after HAHK, bahubali and Gadar.
HAHK did 40% more business than ddlj despite its been dragged in a single theatre on a single show for 20 years.

Earlier in 60s also films were shot abroad in Japan, Russia etc by Nasir Hussain, Raj Kapoor etc. It is not like DDLJ is first film to introduce foreign locations.
Yes I recently watched Dharmendra's blockbuster AANKHAIN been shot in Japan in 60s/70s
and what a treat to watch... Japan was captured so so beautifully, even better than today's films at foreign locals. Cinematography was mind blowing.
uss zamany may shoq, passion aur mehnat say films banatay thaey, unlike the factory churning products of today.
Japan is also shot beautifully in Love in Tokyo.
Nepal looks gorgeous in that Dev Anand film which had Hare Krishna Hare Ram song.
Foreign locations were huge in BW earlier.
Venice and Italy have been shown in Amitabh film Great Gambler also.
I am surprised how 90s PR types always erase impact of films earlier and assume some unique thing started only in 90s by some YRF/SRK/K Jo film.

I think its mainly due to many films shot in Switzerland by YRF , it gave boost to its tourism hence yrf became the poster banner , while as u said foreign location were shot much earlier since 60s (I saw a 50s film as well shot in Japan in black n white, forgot the name..main lead was Joy mukkherji in it)
The film TITLE was actually HARE RAMA HARE KRISHNA (not the song..I guess u got caught between the two đ) the song was DAMM MARO DAMM
DDLJ in all saat janams.
For me it is DDLJ. There was something about being a teen in the 90s, watching DDLJ and imagining your own personal sweeping romance.
Who could forget Madhuriâs purple saree look â¤ď¸ Damn she looked lovely! It became a huge trendsetter at that time.Originally posted by: atominis
DDLJ did NOT run on its own. YRF paid Maratha Mandir to run it for all these years just to break records of Sholay that ran at Minerva for 5 years. Actually Sholay could have run longer at Minerva too if Sippys had not asked them to take it down to make way for their more expensive and ambitious project Shaan.
By no means has DDLJ outdone HAHK in gross, impact or audience reception.
HAHK changed not only Indian cinema but also Indian TV with serials still copying its scenes and songs. HAHK also introduced sangeets, celebrations to real life where such elaborate wedding or pregnancy rituals were not celebrated earlier.
