Dharma Productions did have Dostana with Amitabh and Shatrughan Sinha as a hit.

But their rest of films did not do that well. Agneepath gained cult status only later. Gumrah did okay business.

It is Karan Johar who has made Dharma the huge banner it is today because he probably hung out with Chopras a lot and decided to copy them.

Otherwise even Duplicate (SRK double role) is a Dharma production yet it did not succeed.

Dharma prod did well mainly when it made YRF style romantic cum family drama multi starrers like KKHH, K3G, KHNH, KANK (which was trend of 90s and 2000s films thanks to kind of cinema Barjatyas and Chopras had made from 1989).

Having said that, Dharma cannot be spoken of in same breath as YRF which was a big banner and Yash Chopra was successful filmmaker even before Darr.

yashraj helped srk became the biggest star and also it was srks talent which helped yashraj make such huge hits.

darr, ddlj, dil to pagal hai, mohabbatein, veer zara, rab ne banadi jodi, chak de india, jab tak hai jaan. they had 100 % success rate until Fan which was a flop. lets see whats going to happen with pathan.

It worked both ways. They helped each other.

Before SRK entered bollywood he already had a huge dedicated fanbase due to his work on Dordarshan. Fauji, Circus, Doosra Keval, Wagle Ki Duniya, Dil Dariya etc.

He was a huge TV star, so much so that when he was signed up for Deewana, an insecure Rishi Kapoor completely dismissed him saying he is just a TV actor, turns out he trumped Rishi Kapoor in Deewana.

He first worked with Yashraj in 1993, by then he had done 7 films, all of which were Box office hits excluding Maya Memsahab which was an offbeat film. Basically he gave 6 hits in about a year and a half. He was a huge BO success within a year.

So to say that SRK was nothing before Yahraj 'discovered' him is incorrect.

Aaina was hit.

Lamhe was a super-flop

Chandni was a hit.

Being a big TV star does not ensure success or bankability in films. People like Renuka Shahane, Mukesh Khanna, Nitish Bhardwaj, Arun Govil, Firoz Khan, Pallavi Joshi were bigger TV stars than SRK due to mega serials like Ramayan, Mahabharat, Surabhi, Junoon, Aarohan, Mrignayani etc which were more successful than Fauji and Circus. Still they all failed to make a mark in films even in character roles. Milind Soman was huge in modeling, ads, TV, music videos but failed in films. No TV actor got work in Yash Chopra film the way SRK did.

So it is both ways. YRF did help SRK get bigger platform that other TV actors never get.

I remember Chamatkar, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman and King Uncle were hits. King Uncle had Jackie Shroff and Anu Agarwal as the leads. SRK was playing a supporting role. King Uncle was really popular among the kids.

I’ve watched SRK since Fauji and followed his career. I wasn’t a big fan of his at the beginning but love watching him onscreen. I remember how much I hated him after watching Anjaam. I couldn’t understand how someone could be so cruel but all changed after DDLJ. Salman, Aamir and Akshay were more popular among girls as they more conventionally good looking.

As far as I remember Dil Aashna hai, Chamatkar were not hits. Nor was Maya Memsaab. Even King Uncle and Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman are moderately successful but not big hits. Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman became more popular on TV and its Loveria hua song became a hit. But it is not a big success in theatres.
