2017, why did you have to start on such a bad note? Just when we thought of enjoying the first proper weekend of the year, we hear the news that the National award winning actor Om Puri is no longer among us, mere mortals. Om Puri passed away, after a severe heart attack, this morning, at the age of 66, alone at his house. 66 is just not an age for such legends to depart from this world, but then that has happened. Om Puri was known for his roles in the parallel cinema movement that gained prominence during the '80s, with movies like Mandi, Arohan, Mirch Masala, Aakrosh, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron. He was also known for his versatility, with his comedy roles also getting great appreciation in movies like Chachi 420, Hera Pheri, Deewane Huye Paagal, Singh is King, and others. Even the West took note of his talent and gave him meaty roles in films like Wolf, The Ghost and The Darkness, Charlie Wilson's War, East is East and its sequel West is West. An actor will be missed!
Om Puri's body has been taken to Trishul around 3 p.m. and the funeral is being held at Oshiwara electric crematorium from 6 p.m. His last rites have been attended by many of his colleagues, friends and family members. Vidya Balan, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar, Kabir Khan arrived at the residence as soon as they revived the unfortunate news. Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Farhan Akhtar, Anil Kapoor, Nawazuddin Siddiqui have arrived for his last rites to pay their respects to the departed veteran actor.
Others who attend his final rites were Anupam Kher, Paresh Rawal, Randeep Hooda, Manoj Bajpayee, Ranvir Shorey, Javed Akhtar, Satish Kaushik, Sarika, Shakti Kapoor, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Shekhar Suman, Mukesh Tiwari, Zakir Hussain, and others too arrived to be a part of his last rites.
RIP, Om Puriji, you will be missed!
