RAJ KAPOOR and RANBIR KAPOOR |
It seems Bollywood's latest icon Ranbir Kapoor is walking on the footsteps of his grandfather, the great showman of Indian cinema, Raj Kapoor. Don't believe? Well, not heard the latest news that Ranbir Kapoor has turned producer with his upcoming movie JAGGA JASOOS. The movie is the debut of his production house Picture Shuru Productions, founded in association with his lucky mascot, Anurag Basu.
No Kapoor Khandaan actor has ever taken the responsibility of production at the young age except Raj Kapoor who made his debut with film AAG (1948) when he was just 23 years old, while Ranbir Kapoor is just 31 years. Also, besides being good actors both have a keen sense of cinema as can be seen from the kind of cinema that Ranbir has been choosing which are commercially appealing yet critically acclaimed like AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI, RAAJNEETI , ROCKSTAR, BARFI! Likewise Raj Kapoor made movies like AWAARA, JAGTE RAHO, SHREE 420, JIS DESH MEIN GANGA BEHTI HAI etc. which were commercially saleable and artistically exceptional.
The other similarity may little stun the readers because few may be aware that what Ranbir Kapoor is going to play in JAGGA JASOOS ( i.e. detective) has already been portrayed by his grandfather Raj Kapoor not once but twice in the movies DO JASOOS (1975) and GOPHICHAND JASOOS (1982) indecently the movies were made by producer director Naresh Kumar.
DO JASOOS and GOPICHAND JASOOS |
In DO JASOOS, Raj Kapoor and Rajendra Kumar played the role of detectives who trace the missing daughter a millionaire's and unearth a gang of smuggler. The movie had introduced singer Shailendra Singh, who sang the songs of BOBBY. The movie was an average hit.
After the modest success of the film Naresh Kumar gave many flops. Hence to recover his losses he decided to repeat the success of DO JASOOS and made its sequel as GOPHICHAND JASOOS (1982) with Raj Kapoor and Zeenat Aman but the movie bombed miserably at the box-office.
Three decades later Ranbir Kapoor is making JAGGA JASOOS, once again reviving the detective formula that his grandfather Raj Kapoor attempted. Let's watch whether Ranbir Kapoor is able to make a bigger success than DO JASOOS or gets the fate of GOPHICHAND JASOOS.
