- Part 3 -
Priya stepped out of the room and stood there, her eyes scanning the corridor for Ram. She waited, hoping to see a staff member or a known face who could direct her to where he was.
Meanwhile, in the other room, Ram got up, nervously straightened his clothes, and steeled himself to face the moment of truth. What would Priya's answer be?
He walked down the corridor to the room Priya was in, his heartbeat speeding up with every step he took, until he finally spotted her, anxiously looking down the corridor.
"Mr. Kapoor..."
"Dr. Priya..."
"I was coming to talk to you," they both chimed in unison.
"Mr. Kapoor, I have made up my mind. I think.." Priya started.
"One second." He led her to a corner where they would be out of earshot of any passing staff or family members.
"I won't lie, I'm really anxious now. Everything rests on your answer—my Jaan's happiness, her health. Sorry... I'm so sorry. I'll stop rambling now; you should speak," he muttered, waving his hand in front of his face and taking a deep breath.
"No. My answer is no, Mr. Kapoor," Priya said softly but with conviction.
"But...but...you know Jaan's..." Ram started sputtering, already conjuring up the worst scenarios in his head.
"Mr. Kapoor, please calm down and let me finish," Priya continued calmly.
"Both our reasons for agreeing to this contract marriage were wrong; it's just that our thinking was clouded at that moment. I know you're worried about your mother, and I'm worried for my family too. I think whatever happened today was for good. It showed us what our families would go through when the truth eventually came out. No, don't try to tell me that it won't happen, because it could." Priya said, silencing Ram, who had opened his mouth to protest.
"You would have heard the saying Mr. Kapoor that truth always finds its way out. The more we delay, the more our families will be hurt," she added softly. "We cannot control everyone and everything around us, so it's up to us to make the right choice now and fix the damage rather than make it worse. Mr. Kapoor, I want to speak to Shalini Aunty. I promise I will clear up all the misunderstandings. Please let me speak to her", she requested, and she waited for his response.
"But Priya, you know she agreed to the surgery only after I agreed to get married. What if she refuses now? What if her health deteriorates further and something..." He shuddered in fear, unable to finish the sentence.
"Mr. Kapoor, please trust me. I will not allow anything to happen to her. I am a doctor; it's also my moral responsibility to ensure her well-being. Please..." She persisted.
"I must be mad to agree to something like this," Ram muttered to himself as he agreed to her request and led her to Shalini's room.
"I'll go check on Jaan," Ram told Priya once they were outside Shalini's room as she waited in the corridor.
Yuvraj, who was outside, dutifully obeying Alekha, straightened up as soon as he spotted Ram and Priya. He studied them, wondering what the long deliberations finally led to—was his plan going to be a success, or was he going to have to address Priya as Madam or Mrs. Kapoor in the future? He took a step towards Priya, a snarky comment at the tip of his tongue.
But before he could say anything, Ram came out to usher Priya into the room, whispering, "She's awake now, but we need to be careful to not stress her more."
Priya nodded and followed, while Yuvraj gritted his teeth, fuming at being left out of the conversation once more that night.
"Priya, come in," Shalini called out weakly as soon as she spotted her.
She gestured for her to come closer. Priya gingerly sat on the chair Ram had pulled next to the bed, wondering where to begin.
While she sat there, stewing in her thoughts, she felt Shalini's touch on her hand. She looked up and watched as Shalini grasped her hands.
"Priya, I want to hear the truth from you. You won't lie to me, will you?" Shalini asked, sounding drained, the effect of the sedative still evident.
Priya was filled with guilt, as was Ram, looking at her state.
"No, Aunty, I won't hide anything from you today, but I do have a request to make—actually two. Can Mama and Papa also be here to hear what I have to say? Right now, they're as worried and confused as you are with all that has happened."
Shalini nodded in response. Ram went and called a staff member and returned after instructing him to escort the Soods to Shalini's room. The Soods entered a couple of minutes later and quietly went and stood on the other side of Shalini's bed, hoping to hear something that would dispel the cloud of confusion in their minds.
"I know I have no right to say this," Priya continued, "but I request that you please don't refuse the surgery after you know the entire truth. Aunty, you know better than me how much you mean to Mr. Kapoor, and all he wants is to see you healthy and happy. So please..." Priya pleaded, glancing up to look at Ram, standing next to her, worry lines etched on his forehead.
"It all started when the media posted photos portraying us as a couple."
She looked at Shalini, whose expression had now changed to one of confusion.
"Yes, Aunty, it's true—Mr. Kapoor and I are not in love. In fact, the day those pictures were taken was only the third time we had met. And that day too, we met to talk about someone else. But because of the media, the news of our supposed relationship spread like wildfire. Very soon, friends and relatives were calling mom and dad to verify the news and congratulate them on finding such a worthy son-in-law. You too saw the same news and believed it to be true," Priya said, smiling ruefully and looking at Shalini's crestfallen face.
"When you spoke to my mom about the proposal," she continued, "she knew the truth—that we were not in a relationship like what the media was portraying. But her selfish desire to see her daughter start a new life with " the" Ram Kapoor after being dumped unceremoniously by her boyfriend of six years consumed her. She accepted the proposal on my behalf and set things in motion, even though Papa was not on board. When I got to know of this, I came to talk to you, to turn down the proposal, but when I saw your condition, I couldn't bring myself to tell you the truth."
Priya drew in a deep breath and continued, watching Shalini's reaction closely. She stole a glance at Ram, only to see him chewing his nails anxiously.
"When I met Mr. Kapoor to talk about how we should clear the misunderstanding, he shared with me the condition you had laid down for the surgery. When I first heard the idea of a contract marriage, I flatly refused. But then I thought it over; it seemed like a good plan. For Mr. Kapoor, it meant you got your surgery done, and for me, it meant the end of all the pressure that society and my family had been putting on me. Unfair pressure to get married since my breakup..."
Priya's subconscious could not help but peek into the changing expressions of her parents and Shalini.
She took a pause to let their side of the story sink into their parents' minds, who wanted nothing but their happiness, and how foolish it would have been of both of them to keep up the pretense of happiness when there was none.
Her breath drawling, already holding the combined guilt of both of them, she braved further, sighing, "I foolishly thought that once the contract ended, I would be declared damaged goods, and then I could stay single for the rest of my life, only focusing on my work. I thought it would be a fitting retort to the man who took less than 5 minutes to throw me out of his life, yet painted me as a stalker who was still hung up on him and hell bent on destroying his life while portraying himself as a victim."
She looked up only to see Sanjeev's crestfallen face, and it made her feel guiltier than ever. Her lips began to tremble, and her heart crumbled, seeing her father like that. And all they both wanted was for these people—their people—to be happy.
The irony.
Ram's ears pricked, hearing Priya's last sentence. He recalled Priya stonewalling every question he asked about Yuvraj and her hurt expression when he referred to her as Yuvraj's stalker-psycho ex, her sobs that had echoed in his ears after Yuvraj had fought with her standing in Kapoor Mansion. Was it possible that Dr. Priya was the real victim and Yuvraj was the one lying to them? That Yuvraj was indeed a gold digger who was interested in Alekha only because of her wealth? Why, then, did she accept that tag and convince Alekha that Yuvraj was right? He rubbed his forehead, which was starting to throb as his brain tried to piece things together.
Priya sniffed, and Ram's train of thought was interrupted, and he turned to her once again. He somehow noticed that Priya did not include him in the entire deal negotiation.
The deal that he had wanted too—and got her to agree to. His forehead creased again.
"He spared no words to taunt me, mock me, and rub his new relationship in my face at every chance he got," she continued with a heavy heart.
"I wanted to show him that he did not affect me and that I was still strong. But I was wrong. I should have told you everything honestly the first time I came to meet you. Had I done that, you, mom and dad, wouldn't be going through all this pain today," she sighed, her eyes now starting to sting with the effort of holding back her tears.
Priya raised her head and glanced at Shalini, and to her horror, she saw her eyes droop. She watched as Shalini's hand fell limp to the side and her head collapsed to the left.
"Aunty!"
"Jaan!"
Priya and Ram screamed simultaneously.
Distressed, she looked at Ram only to see his face white as a sheet.

Sneak peek
"Jaan! Ja-an! Wake up...pl-please," Ram stammered, falling on his knees at her bedside, panic-stricken. He patted Shalini's cheek and shook her by the shoulders to wake her up.
"Dr. Priya! Do something... You promised nothing would happen to Jaan!" Ram yelled.

Good chapter. I'm glad Priya revealed all.
I hope Shalini will be fine and stop her emotional blackmail.
Maybe she can suggest a proper arranged marriage of Ram Priya now that all truth is out because she trusts that Priya is a good person.
And again I am waiting for immersion in the world of beauty)
Thanks for tagging, dear! Yaar, this story is the way it was meant to be. Was it really so tough for the scriptwriters to write a story like this?!?
