- Part 4 -
"Jaan! Ja-an! Wake up...pl-please," Ram stammered, falling on his knees at her bedside, panic-stricken.
He patted Shalini's cheek and shook her by the shoulders to wake her up.
"Dr. Priya! Do something... You promised nothing would happen to Jaan!" Ram yelled.
"Mr. Kapoor, please calm down and go and get the nurse," she said, while trying to calm her own nerves as she got up to grab a glass of water.
Sanjeev, Anju, and Ritika watched, shell-shocked, as Ram reluctantly left Shalini's side and walked towards the door.
"Did you really think your mother was that weak, Ram?"
Ram froze as if struck by a thunderbolt. He spun around to see a smile dancing on Shalini's lips.
"Jaan," he cried as he ran and took her in a bear hug.
"Jaan, you're okay. You're okay!" he said breathlessly, smiling through tears.
He turned to look at Priya giving Sanjeev a hug and gave her a 1000-watt smile as the Soods breathed a collective sigh of relief.
"Jaan, why did you do this? I thought I had..." Ram choked on his words.
"I'm perfectly fine. Everyone was so serious, so I just thought I'd change the mood a bit. You both gave me a shock, so I thought I'd return the favor, that's all!" Shalini said it with a twinkle in her eyes.
"And Ram, you should know better. We have been through so much; did you really think I wouldn't be able to handle even this much, and you went ahead and concocted this web of lies to protect me, hunh?"
"Jaan... Aap bhi naa! Who plays a joke like this, like seriously?"
"Okay, fine. I won't do it again," Shalini assured Ram, patting his cheek.
"Now tell me, Ram, if you weren't in love with Dr. Priya, why didn't you tell me that earlier? Priya?" Shalini asked softly, looking from Priya to Ram.
"It's my fault, Jaan," Ram answered, looking distraught.
"I didn't tell you because the girl I love wasn't ready for a commitment, and she didn't want our relationship out in the open because it would affect her career adversely," and went on to explain the problem he had. "I had promised to support her in all her decisions, Jaan"
"When you fell sick and announced that you wouldn't get the surgery done until I got married to Dr. Priya, I had no choice but to go to her for help."
As he completed saying this, his shoulders relaxed, and his chest felt a whole lot lighter.
"Why didn't you tell me this earlier, Ram? Of course, I was excited to get you married, but your happiness was the most important thing to me. If you loved a girl, you should have told me. Even if she wasn't my first choice, I would've accepted her for your sake." Shalini looked at Ram, still trying to understand what drove her son to take a step like this.
"Because I was scared. You've already met her, Jaan, and you haven't liked her since the first time you saw her. On the other hand, you fell in love with Dr. Priya after the first meeting itself. I was afraid that you would compare my girlfriend to Dr. Priya and reject her because they were nothing like each other. You know how much you mean to me, Jaan. I never wanted a situation where you were forced to accept someone for my sake. I needed time for you to get to know her and build a bond, but when you fell sick, I didn't know what to do."
"Is it Kriti? All the news articles about the two of you—were they all true?" Shalini asked Ram directly. He nodded mutely.
"Was she okay with you getting married to someone else?" She asked, now starting to wonder about Kriti and her love for Ram.
Ram nodded again. "It was actually her idea," he said uncomfortably, watching Shalini's expression change.
"But only for you, Jaan," he hastily added. "And we were going to tell you the truth after 3 months, when the contract duration was up," he added.
"Ram, I can see that you love her and care about her. But are you really sure she loves you? Is she truly the one for you?" Shalini asked softly, with a sad smile.
"I know she loves me, Jaan," Ram said with a confidence that betrayed the strange, unexplained sinking feeling within, kneeling on the floor next to Shalini and holding her hand.
"But what happened today was too much for her, and she broke up with me a while back," Ram said dejectedly, pressing Shalini's hand to his head.
"Sanjeev ji," Shalini said, speaking directly to Priya's father this time. "I know learning all this is as much of a shock to you as it is to me. But thanks to Priya for telling me the truth and also supporting Ram so he was finally able to share what was in his heart, I've realised that I'm equally to blame for all of this as these two. I should have stopped to talk to Ram and understand what was in his heart instead of pushing him to do this by using my surgery to pressure him. As parents, we always want the best for our children, but sometimes we forget that our children have grown up and are capable of taking charge of their lives. No matter how progressive we are, we can't help becoming typical Indian parents from time to time." She smiled ruefully.
"Jaan, don't say that! You know, I don't think like that. I'm nothing without you!" Ram jumped in, hurt that Shalini should feel something like that.
"I know, and yet we're here today, aren't we, Ram? But it's not too late." She sighed, patting Ram lovingly on the cheek.
"Shalini ji, if it's your fault, then it's mine too," Sanjeev said, looking crestfallen. "I feel like I failed as a father today; I couldn't understand what was in my daughter's heart. I couldn't inspire confidence in her, that she could share her worries with me, and that I would stand by her."
"Papa..." Priya gasped, words failing her. She knew her father was hurting, but she felt helpless. Nothing she said now could erase the pain she had caused her family.
"Ram, I'm going to ask you a question, and I want you to answer it honestly." Shalini said, turning her attention to Ram again.
"If I were okay with it, would you want to get back with Kriti?"
Ram looked at her, surprised, and then nodded his head slowly in response.
"Then you have my approval. I will try my best to accept her for your sake. And I will get my surgery done whenever you tell me, okay?" Ram nodded, his face breaking out into a wide smile, saying a silent prayer while shedding a few happy tears.
"Now, Priya, what do you want?" She asked, looking Priya in the eyes.
"I'm sorry, Papa, and I'm sorry, Mumma," she said, looking at her parents before turning to face Shalini again. "All I want now is to put all this behind me and focus on my work and not think about marriage."
Shalini gave her hand a squeeze and looked at Sanjeev and Anju.
"We will do whatever Priya wishes. If she wants to work, she will work. And whenever she feels she's ready for marriage, she will tell us, and only then will we proceed. No, Anju," Sanjeev stopped her just as she was about to interrupt, "this time we will put our daughter and her happiness first. Let people say what they want to; we will stand with Priya."
"I will also be there," Shalini added with a smile, with her hand on Priya's cheek.
"So what if the marriage didn't happen? Priya will always have a special place in my heart."
Ram leapt forward and hugged Shalini. Priya got up and went to her parents. Sanjeev kissed her forehead affectionately while Anju embraced her as Ritika looked on, heaving a sigh of relief that everything was going back to normal, seemingly.
While cushioned by both their parents, Priya’s eyes met Ram’s. He mouthed a silent thanks to Priya as he watched the Sood family fuss over her.
His gratitude met with Priya’s gesture of a blink of eyes and a smooth curve of her lips and he felt not alone anymore, strangely.
On the other hand, she felt the same way too. Although it ended the façade of partnership that tied them together in front of their parents and the world, she also felt liberated from the fear of opinions and disappointed hopes she harbored until now, all because of a simple mimed thank you from a relieved man who held mountains on his shoulders for his loved ones and their happiness. She felt absolutely fine being single and self-reliant. She knew she had her people by her side now.
Ram’s eyes twinkled with mirth, and the corners crinkled as he playfully pulled his Jaan’s cheeks while standing up straight and looking at Priya, who whirlwind-ed into his life with her family. She was ready to boil the oceans to make her loved ones not worry. Her smile felt like his effort matched hers as she took on the responsibility of clearing the mess in front of their families together, but he wasn’t done yet.
Now it was his responsibility to make sure that neither Priya nor her family were targeted by the media. He had another task as well: to find out how the contract papers got leaked to the media in the first place.

Apologies for the time this update has taken. Although the part was almost ready a while back I didn't have enough time to wrap it up thanks to some travelling and personal commitments I had.

Dazz... Dazz... Dazz.. bas tum likhti jao aur main padhti jaaun....
What a beautiful update. I am in love with the fact that there is so much sense here. Shalini and Sanjeev thinking and talking rationally.👏
Ram still wants to get back with Kriti even after she broke up with him?😳 Ram, I'm completely judging you now. Beta tumhara dimaag ghutno mein hai kya?
Priya is definitely my kind of girl. Wants to concentrate on work and not bother about marriage. Exactly me.❤️
Wah wah... Ram! He actually thinks it is his responsibility to make sure that Priya and her family and secure and not harassed by the media? Kya tumhare dil mein Priya ke liye kuch....? hmmm?😳
Looking forward to the next update already. Please iss baar thoda jaldi update karna.🤗
Love,
Mrina
Nice. Glad Priya can walk away from this contract stuff. I want Ram to regret missing out on a good rishta because he was too blind to see the truth of K.

As for Ramu's kuch kuch hota hai...aage aage dekho hota hai kya 😉
Ae this was brilliant, the way the two of them explained their pov to the parents, the way the parents were undeestanding towards them. Absolutely loved it.. 👏👏👏
Your story is moving so beautifully. Everyone knows that there is nothing stronger than truth and sincerity. Priya showed it to everyone. Ram will not be able to get past this, although he has not yet understood who he really needs
