Salman Akhtar Reflects on Estrangement From Brother Javed Akhtar; Praises Him an "Sharp-Witted Poet”

Javed Akhtar, a well-known lyricist and poet, has a younger brother named Salman Akhtar, who is both an author and a psychoanalyst. Recently, Salman opened up about the unresolved issues between them that have led to a lack of communication. Despite their estrangement, he mentioned Javed in his book. In a conversation with The Lallantop, Salman discussed their relationship and whether things might improve in the future.

In the interview with Lallantop, Salman talked about mentioning Javed Akhtar in his book, Ghar Ka Bhedi, even though they haven’t spoken to each other. He shared that while he writes about notable figures like Sigmund Freud, Donald Winnicott, and Faiz, he has never met them in person. Salman expressed, “So, to write about him (Javed), but not having met him is no contradiction in my opinion. Both things are possible, no?” This shows how he feels comfortable discussing his brother, even in their silence.

When asked if there is a possibility for reconciliation, Salman replied that if Javed Akhtar, the father of Zoya and Farhan Akhtar, wishes to communicate, “that’s a good choice because I am a pretty decent person.” Although they have not spoken for a long time, Salman believes they maintain an intuitive connection.

Delving deeper into their estrangement, he explained that the issues between them are intricate and layered. “They have fine tendrils, emotions, and history. They are not matters which can be discussed in a broad public way,” he shared. Despite the rift, he praised Javed as an “erudite, intelligent, sharp-witted man, and a very good poet,” acknowledging their shared understanding.

Recently, a docuseries called Angry Young Men, directed by Namrata Rao, was released. It showcases the life, achievements, challenges, and breakup of legendary screenwriters from the 1970s, including Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan. The series sheds light on the complexities of their lives, resonating with Salman’s reflections on his relationship with his brother.
