Kiran Rao feels fresh cast for Oscar entry 'Laapataa Ladies' worked in their favour

Kiran Rao’s latest directorial venture, Laapataa Ladies, has been chosen as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025. The film, which hit theatres in March 2024, has received immense love from audiences for its fresh storytelling and unique humor. Produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Kindling Pictures, and Jio Studios, Laapataa Ladies takes viewers on a comical yet meaningful journey, focusing on the everyday struggles of women.

In a recent conversation, Kiran Rao revealed why she chose to cast fresh faces for her film, avoiding established stars. According to her, the decision to work with new actors brought an authenticity to the narrative. “By selecting a fresh cast, we wanted to keep the story rooted and organic, making it more relatable for the audience," Kiran shared. "When viewers don’t recognize the actors, they can immerse themselves fully in the world of the film without any preconceived notions. This is one of the reasons people connected so well with the story."

The plot of Laapataa Ladies centers around an absurd mix-up between two women who, due to their ghunghats (traditional veils), are confused for one another during a train journey. This comedic yet insightful premise allowed Kiran to blend humor with deeper themes about women’s lives. “We wanted to portray the everyday challenges women face at different stages of life, but through a light-hearted lens,” Kiran said. “No one wants to be preached to at the movies, and humor is a great way to address uncomfortable issues."

With the Oscar entry, Kiran expressed her excitement and gratitude, acknowledging the many talented films that came out this year. She stated, “I am thrilled by the recognition.
