Bollywood movies occasionally stray away from fictional stories, and choose to bring to the silver screen, the lives of those brave men and women who have put their nation above everything else. As the nation gears up to celebrate Independence Day, BollyCurry, brings to you a list of movies based on the lives of such patriots.

The Legend of Bhagat Singh

The Ajay Devgn starrer, The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002), stood out among the other biopics based on the same revolutionary released alongside. This is largely due to the lead's acting chops. The innate determination to win freedom for his country was portrayed to perfection by Devgn, winning him the prestigious National Film Award for the Best Actor.

Chak De India

Chak De India (2007) was based on the life story of a disgraced Indian hockey player, Mir Ranjan Negi, who made an unbelievable comeback by coaching the Indian national women's hockey team to medal glory. The conviction and natural acting with which Shah Rukh Khan brought the story to life, helped catapult the movie to a blockbuster and it is counted as one of his best performances to date.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

Farhan Akhtar underwent rigorous physical training to play the role of Milkha Singh in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013), and the transformation can be summed up as unbelievable. The movie was the best tribute to one of our greatest sporting heroes, who raced to raise his nation's stance in world athletics.

Mary Kom

The story of an Indian female boxer who fought regressive notions in the society to literally fight her way to Olympic glory, Mary Kom (2014) had Priyanka Chopra playing the titular role. The film succeeded in communicating the unflinching spirit of the pugilist in the face of all adversities to us viewers.

Airlift

Akshay Kumar's lead role in Airlift (2016) was based on the real life story of two non-resident Indians who helped evacuate thousands of Indians from abroad in the backdrop of a fierce international conflict. The love for one's countrymen equates to the nature of a true patriot and the actions of the men who risked their selves to save the lives of many others is truly inspirational.

With many biopics, such as one based on cricketer, M.S. Dhoni, and another based on the famous freedom fighter, Rani Laxmibai, in the works, Bollywood is sure to gift us with many more memorable patriotic films.
